UWA CELT Achievements

4 The University of Western Australia celt.uwa.edu.au 5

• Develop their knowledge of the language of their chosen discipline

• Develop an understanding of the Australian academic and research culture

• Develop a high level of analytical and reflective skills in an Australian academic context

• Module 2 gives students an opportunity to work on a research paper and portfolio in their discipline area and on research presentations

• Develop strategies to attribute literary sources appropriately

• Develop the capacity to be autonomous learners at an Australian university with the confidence to participate freely and appropriately in academic situations

the demands of the academic environment before commencing their tertiary studies.

A 70% pass in the Bridging Course meets the University’s English language requirement for most under- and post-graduate courses that require an IELTS of 6.5 with no band below 6.0. However, some courses at UWA have higher entry requirements, for instance:

• Master of Business Administration (Flexible and full-time) require an overall 75% with no skill below 70%

• All Faculty of Law courses require an overall 85%

The Bridging Course will help students to:

• Improve their English language skills to the level required by UWA

• Learn about the organisation and language of various types of academic texts

Students unable to meet the Bridging Course entry requirements have the option of improving their English competency by starting with an English for Academic Purposes, or General English course at UWA CELT.

An alternative pathway for university entrance is available through our English for Academic Purposes program, together with preparation for the IELTS or TOEFL examination.

Whilst it is a structured course with an underlying pedagogy, English for Academic Purposes, which is offered in five-week modules, is modified every term to meet the needs of the class group.

By accommodating itself in this way to the knowledge and ability of its students, this course offers a highly supportive means to develop academic skills and English language ability. This focus on student needs incorporates assessment of achievements according to the composition of each class. For this reason, students choosing to study English for Academic Purposes must also sit an IELTS or internet-based TOEFL examination.

OPTION 2:

English for Academic Purposes + IELTS/TOEFL examination

Sample Timetable for the Bridging CourseEnglish language pathways to UWA degreesThe most common pathway is via UWA CELT’s Academic English and Study Skills Bridging Course, (Bridging Course) which offers direct entry into tertiary studies at UWA. This course is best for students who meet the Bridging Course’s entry standards and who can enrol for 10 or 20 weeks of intensive study.

UWA CELT offers two pathways to improve English language proficiency to the level required by the University for entry into its undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The Bridging Course has been designed for international students who wish to study at UWA but do not have the required level of English language proficiency.

The program is also suitable for students with unconditional entry into UWA who would like to further develop their confidence, language ability and to better cope with

“I completed the 20-week BC course at UWA CELT in 2015 and

am currently studying the Master of Translation Studies at

UWA. It is a really useful and practical course. I acquired skills

such as notetaking, paraphrasing, summarising and academic

writing. These skills are necessary for your degree course and I

would recommend the Bridging Course to any student!”

Monica Wang (right)ChinaBridging Course Graduate currently enrolled in UWA’s Masters of Translation Studies

“To begin, I would like to say thank you UWA! Because now my dreams are coming true! I would like to say people can pursue the impossible! The Bridging Course helped me to improve not only my English skills, but also my life.”

Victoria Figueroa BustosVenezuela

“The Bridging Course enhanced my academic skills and gave me an understanding of Australian culture. The course has a well-organised curriculum combined with the best teaching methods and is designed to help students going into various academic fields at the University.

During my studies, I had a lot of support from friendly and qualified teachers, as well as knowledgeable and experienced student advisors. UWA CELT has equipped me with the English proficiency and skills to commence my PhD in Social Sciences and Cultural Studies at UWA and for my future life.”

Ali Sirwan AbdulkarimIraq - Kurdistan Region

“We chose UWA CELT because it belongs to the University of Western Australia so we believe that UWA CELT will provide the best education system. When we started the course, we were very impressed with the teachers and friends, also the way of teaching. Furthermore, we can meet friends from all over the world such as Japan, Brazil, France, Italy, Saudi-Arabia, Colombia and Korea.”

Kanokpit Rungroj (Jan) & Pakjira Sataneegun (Pop)Thailand

“My reason for studying English at UWA CELT is to give myself more opportunities in the future for a better job. The things that I enjoyed most at UWA CELT would be the classes which were interesting. The workshops and activities were also a lot of fun, especially the original aboribional inspired art; we also got a chance to practice our coversational English while doing this activity.”

Diana Ortega - Urban Transport Planner (Engineer)Colombia

“UWA Centre for English Language Teaching (UWA CELT) exceeded my highly set goals and expectations. I started with General English and will soon complete the Bridging course, with my English language skills improving significantly. I look forward to commencing the UWA Master in Infectious Diseases course.”

Sanja SimeunovicBosnia & Herzegovina

“I am currently completing a Master’s degree of Engineering in Oil and Gas by coursework at UWA, and I completed my ten-week Bridging Course through UWA CELT.

By doing the Bridging Course, I learned other required qualities for my current study, for instance, giving a presentation in English, writing an academic essay and conducting research independently. Those qualities are constantly used in my Master’s course.

The greatest challenge for many international students, actually, is not English, but to alter their point of view towards academic study. The Bridging Course offered a tremendous help in adapting to study at UWA.”

Western Australia covers one-third of the Australian continent. Spanning over 2.5 million square kilometres (1 million square miles), Western Australia extends into two different climatic zones. When it is warm and dry in the north of the State, it is cool and wet in the south. Bordered largely by desert to the east, Western Australia is bounded by 12,500 kilometres (7813 miles) of the world’s most pristine coastline to the west. Western Australia is a land blessed with some of the world’s most precious natural phenomena including

the dolphins of Monkey Mia, the 350-million-year-old Bungle Bungle range and the towering karri forests of the South West. Venture beyond Perth to see a vast country of big experiences. Be in awe of landscapes carved by nature over millions of years. Immerse yourself in Aboriginal culture. Get up close and personal with the unique flora and fauna of Australia. Situated in the far north is the Kimberly region, an ancient landform of rugged ranges with deep, spectacular gorges and pristine sandy beaches.

The Pilbara region is the heartland of Western Australia and offers thrilling adventure and ecotourism opportunities. The north is contrasted by the natural forests and vineyards of the South West. Wherever you go, the memories will last forever.
