Nina’s Noodlings

What a delight to be at being at 67 South Randolph on the last Friday night in May to witness the joyful

gathering of the Coming of Age class… mentors and young people… as they prepared to set forth on the Vision

Quest weekend retreat. With that bit of mayhem in the background, the homeless meal preparation team was

busy in the kitchen throwing together a meal for the anticipated sixty guests, while our fearless B&G co chair

Judith Knauss scampered onto the roof in her bare feet to free the drains in the hope that the bathroom leak

would cease. We are indeed a multi-faceted organization!

This is my final message as president and provides me the opportunity to thank the members of the Board of

Trustees: Jeff, Jim, Jane, Anne, Thalia, Larry, Nick, Joe, and our Committee of Ministry team, for the

extraordinary commitment and collaborative effort we demonstrated this year. It has been a truly memorial

experience for me to work with such a group of committed, intelligent, caring people who were willing to

grapple with challenging concerns and issues in a spirit of good intentions and humor. We didn’t finish the

work. The great wheel of life goes on and on. Thank you all for allowing me to share this year’s turning with

you!

Please join the Fellowship community on Sunday, June 2 to be inspired and renewed in your faith journey as the

young people in our Coming of Age class share their dreams with us.

From the Minister June 2013

As June comes upon us, it harkens the beginning of summer. For me, summer has always had the

connotation of lazy days of rest, relaxation and looking forward to a vacation away from familiar

surroundings. While that image of summer has never left me, as an adult, I’ve discovered reality doesn’t

always follow our image of how things “should” be.

These days, June has become a time of focusing almost exclusively on racing to finish the official

congregational year and getting ready for a week with my ministerial colleagues and more than 3000 UUs

from all over the globe as we gather at General Assembly (GA).

This year we gather in Louisville, Kentucky, with a theme of “From Promise to Commitment”. This GA

has been designed to “examine and renew our covenant to our faith, one another, our congregations and the

larger world.” We’ll explore the kinds of promises we make as we “seek to live out our Unitarian

Universalist values; how we make these promises, with whom, and how we hold ourselves and each other

accountable.” Programs will focus on: “environmental justice, the next steps in immigration justice, anti-

racism, anti-oppression multiculturalism, organizing for justice, multigenerational work, growing Unitarian

Universalism, leadership education, spiritual growth and theology. “

It’s not too late to register to attend. But even if you can’t attend, you can participate via the Internet. Go to

the UUA website to learn how. For anyone who has never attended GA, this could be an easy and

wonderful introduction.

Lifespan Faith Developments

Coming of Age – Save the date: Sunday, June 2

The Coming of Age Program, which began in December of 2012, will

culminate on June 2, 2013, with a Sunday morning service in which the

Coming of Age graduates will present their personal creeds. The program has

been fun-filled and exciting. There was a field trip to New York City, where

we visited the UN, the Society for Ethical Culture, the 9/11 Memorial and the

“Louis C. Tiffany and the Art of Devotion” exhibit at the Museum of

Biblical Art (shopping may also have occurred). There were field trips to

other places of worship, such as the UU Fellowship of Middletown, Vassar

Temple, St. John’s Lutheran Church and Chuang Yen Monastery. There were

weekend workshops and sleep-overs (well, okay, there wasn’t much sleep!).

There have been community service projects like preparing and serving the

Homeless Shelter meal and doing grounds work at the Fellowship and

Braeside Camp. There was a final weekend retreat, called VisionQuest, held

at Braeside Camp. Above all, there was a lot of learning, about ourselves and

each other, and about the world around us. And, of course, there was laughter!

For those of you who are not familiar with the Coming of Age program, it is the Unitarian Universalist way of

marking the transition of our young people from children’s programs to youth programs, and the beginning of

their transition to adulthood. Each of the participants is paired with an adult mentor, and together we explore

questions of spirituality, religion, ethics and personal responsibility. Each youth develops a personal creed,

which they usually share during the Sunday service at which their work is recognized and celebrated.

More Lifespan Faith Developments

The Search for a Director of Religious Education The DRE Search Committee has been working for the past several months to hire

a Director of Religious Education for Children and Youth. After advertising, the

committee was able to select and bring in candidates for interviews. While

continuing to review new applications, we are investigating further and hope to

have a new DRE in place by summer.

Mark your calendars and plan to attend ….. RE SUNDAY on June 23!

This is the day we all get a glimpse into what our younger members have been up to all year, things they've

learned, truths they've felt, lives they've touched. Brace yourselves for a truly UUnique experience as

Kindergarteners through young adults present summaries, songs, and skits of their various Religious Education

experiences. The children will plan and conduct the entire service, culminating our Religious Education year.

Come and share!!

Thank you ! Our religious education program this year owes its success to the dedication of our teachers and assistants, the

families who participated in the children and youth programs and brought them to the Fellowship on Sundays,

the mentors of our Coming of Age students listed above, the chaperones on field trips, the instructors of our

adult programs, the adults who attended classes, and the many other people within the congregation who

stepped forward to work with students and teachers, sometimes at the last minute, or who took care of many

other tasks too numerous to remember, let alone mention. Our Lifespan Faith Development Committee took on

the additional task of coordinating the programs for children and youth in the absence of a DRE, with much

support from our Board of Trustees. To all of you - thank you, thank you, and thank you! And to our students:

you made it possible by providing this congregation with such fresh perspectives and filling us with your love

and appreciation.

Anticipating the Fall …. Although we are just reaching the end of our current program year, we are already looking ahead to the Fall and

next year’s programs for all ages of the lifespan. Expect to be hearing from us during the summer with

information about the Religious Education offerings, as well as registration information and orientation

sessions. We plan to offer the OWL (Our Whole Lives) program for 7th

-9th

grade students and for 10th

-12th

grade students; information will be available closer to September. Any adults interested in training to become

an OWL facilitator, please contact Judith Knauss. Suggestions for adult classes, workshops, introductory

sessions and field trips are welcome. Contact one of the LFD Committee co-chairs: Terry Horner, Sooozie

Nowak, or Margie Watters.

Have a wonderful summer! And remember to bring back some water from wherever your travels lead you during the summer for our annual Ingathering Service in September.

Social Justice Committee News The Fair Trade Festival held at the Fellowship on May 18 was a success. It was smaller than our annual Fair

Trade Bazaar held in November at Vassar College, but we shared a lot of great information about the meaning

of fair trade and its importance to people around the world.

On Wednesday, June 12 the Social Justice Committee will meet at 6:00, as it usually does on the second

Wednesday of the month.

Also on June 12, at 7:00, we will host a presentation by the Sierra Club. Chief Jake Edwards, Onondaga Nation

Council of Chiefs, and Jack Manno will speak about the Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign

(www.honorthetworow.org). Some of the goals of this campaign include:

1) Increase awareness of the Two Row Wampum Treaty; what was agreed to, what it meant then and means

today, including the legal priority given to treaties in the U.S. Constitution...

11) Present Haudenosaunee views on environmental issues including hydrofracking and climate change.

111) Create awareness of the link between environmental destruction and the US’s failure to live up to the

promise of the Two Row Wampum Treaty.

There are many more goals which you can see online, but you should be able to see from these how this

presentation relates to the Doctrine of Discovery that our Fellowship has been studying and discussing the past

couple of years. This Campaign has gotten a lot of attention recently and we hope that many members of our

Fellowship will come to the June 12 presentation to be informed of the issues and share their thoughts.

The Fifth Sunday collection on June 30 will be taken to benefit Hudson River Housing. Please give generously.

Pride Walk Join the fun at the annual New Paltz Pride event, June 2nd in Hasbrook Park. We will have a UU information

table and plan to march in the parade. Table setup begins at 11:00 am with the march at 1pm. If you would like

STEWARDS OF THE MONTH Terry Horner, Sooozie Nowak, Margie Watters

The terrific trio of Terry Horner, Sooozie Nowak and Margie Watters have shepherded the Lifespan Faith

Development Committee (aka Religious Education), through this Fellowship year.

Not only did they fulfill their roles as committee members, once we lost our newly hired DRE, they also

assumed the myriad duties of a Director of Religious Education.

Who are these dedicated members of our Fellowship?

Terry Horner, husband of Elizabeth and father of Ben, Doug and Tory, joined the UUFP around 1993. Doug

and Ben, now 25 and 22, attended our RE classes, from their early years. Tory, dedicated by our former

minister, Kay Greenleaf, has been involved in children’s RE from that moment on.

Terry and his family have been mainstays of our congregation since they became members. Terry served on the

Board of Trustees in the late 90’s, and was Board Chair in 1998-99. He was also a member of the first DRE

search committee, which convened last summer.

Sooozie Nowak came to the UUFP about 10 years ago. She was inspired to come to a service by a UU friend,

who told her of the tradition of the Flower Communion. Sooozie says, “ In a very short while I started helping

in the RE rooms, and now proudly say I’ve logged more hours upstairs than down!” Sooozie has also been

involved in garden projects, coffee hours, soul collage and homeless shelter meal preparation. About our

children, Sooozie says, “Please remember that the youngest members are our allies, our resources, our

investment, and our friends. Talk to them, support them, inspire them, and be inspired by them.”

Margie Watters and her daughter, Kayla, began their UUFP journey about 12 years ago. Kayla began her

involvement with RE at that time. Margie signed the membership book about 2 years later. Since joining the

Fellowship, Margie has been Chair of the Hospitality Committee, a member of the Membership Committee, a

member of the Board of Trustees, on the current DRE Search Committee and assistant office staff. During her

tenure in the latter position, she created the first Fellowship online calendar.

About her relationship to the UUFP, Margie says, “I came to the Fellowship, initially, recently divorced and

recovering from a long, severe illness. Entering the door, I saw people I knew, who were welcoming and kind.

Others invited me to join in various activities. It took me a while to become engaged, but now I am fully

involved. I feel I owe much of my recovery to this Fellowship, which has become like a second home to me and

the people like family.”

Thank you, Terry, Sooozie and Margie. The adults and children of this community are deeply indebted to you

for your stewardship of our religious education program.

Stewardship Committee Stewardship Campaign Has Ended The Stewardship Campaign has ended and the results have been reported to the Finance Committee so that they

may formulate a budget for 2013/14. That budget will be proposed to the membership at the Town Meeting on

May 19th and voted on, as accepted or amended at the annual meeting in June.

The results of the campaign are as follows. Total pledges received 67. Total amount pledged $119,733. This

compares with the particularly successful previous year, 2012/13 when we received 78 pledges totaling

$138,200. We received 12 new pledges. Some pledges from last year were not renewed due to relocations.

The basic cost of keeping the Fellowship operating, i.e. salaries, lights, heat, maintenance etc is $137,600 per

year. We have, presently, 114 members. We also receive pledges from some who remain friends but not

members.

Thank you to all who pledged this year. While we need to address the fact that pledges came in well below

expectations, our fellowship remains strong.

The regularly scheduled Buildings & Grounds workday is June 8, 2013, from 9am to 12pm. We hope you’ll

come by and help us spruce the Fellowship up for our Third Sunday Lunch tours! Refreshments provided.

LAWNMOWING AND GARDENING

It’s that time of year! Time to rev up the lawnmower and pull on the gardening gloves. Can you help us

maintain the Fellowship grounds for the summer by signing up to mow one week? Or adopt a garden to keep

weeded and watered? Sign up sheets will be available in the lobby, or email Judith (judith.knauss@gmail.com)

and Dale (sbridge58@gmail.com) with your availability.

THIRD SUNDAY LUNCH

June’s Third Sunday Lunch will be hosted by the Buildings and Grounds Committee. Weather permitting, we

will be encouraging use of our grounds, perhaps even eating outdoors! Walk the labyrinth, work in a garden,

help trim a tree! There will also be tours of the inside of the building, showcasing work that has been done

during the past year and highlighting work yet to be done. Join us on June 16 after the service for food,

fellowship and Father’s Day!

The Closet Project

Some of you may know that the Fellowship has a lot of closets, some tiny, some rather large. These closets are

not always efficiently used, and some are in serious states of disrepair. Beginning last summer, Buildings &

Grounds began am ambitious project to reclaim, reconfigure and reorganize the closets. Well, three out of four

closets from the first round are complete, and it’s very exciting.

The B&G Committee would like to thank John Collachio, Bryan Cook, Brad Kendall, Peggy Malloy, Len

Marcus and Tony Maresco, for all of their help in making the dream of better closets a reality!

If you are interested in seeing the work to date and see what’s next, come to the Third Sunday Lunch on June

16th

Administrator, Joedy Kievit, and please wait for Joedy’s confirmation before assuming the space is available! If

your event, activity or meeting is not on the calendar, others may have reserved the space and they are then

entitled to its use.

Please remember that it is also important to leave the rooms clean and arranged as found.

Eco-Friendly Supplies

By now, we hope everyone knows that the Fellowship is in the process of changing all the products we utilize –

from cleaning supplies to paper goods – to environmentally sensitive brands. If you are making purchases on

behalf of the Fellowship or for use at the Fellowship, please bear this in mind. While it is sometimes more

costly from a dollar perspective, it is better from a seventh principle perspective!

Fundraising Dinners

June 1st, Brunch with Nina Lynch in Rhinebeck

This is an all day affair which starts at 11.00 with a vegetarian Brunch, with mostly local ingredients, and if the

weather cooperates, She can make room for about 16, including kids. Then folks can split up or go together to

one or more of the areas wonderful historic and natural areas, or explore the village of Rhinebeck. Or just hang

out around the pool. The cost will be $18., and $9. for kids under 14. Contact Nina for more

information. Raffle tickets will again be sold at the fellowship.

July 20th at the Sudnik pool.

An event for 4-10 people starting at 3P.M.,( sorry no kids) right here in Poughkeepsie. Last year this event was

a huge success, and you don't want to miss out this year. There will be a barbeque, and picnic by the pool. Call

Thalia for more information. Sorry, there is no way to sell the raffle tickets for this one.

Fundraising Picnic at the Beach. Enjoy a summer’s day with Karen on Candlewood Lake, CT. Saturday,

August 3, 2013 (rain date Sunday, August 4). Al fresco dining for 12. Menu includes chicken entrée (or

vegetarian) and side dishes, seasonal harvest veggies, salads, dessert/coffee/tea. Suggested donation of $20.00;

$10.00 child. Swim, bask, eat, paddle, sunbathe, eat, row, lounge, hike, roast marshmallows, you get the

idea…arrive at Noon until after dark when we sit around the fire pit. Carpooling suggested. There are many

stairs – to the beach and house; join us if you are up to it!

Jonathan is a Café favorite, with the special gift of entrancing adults as well as children. He has been performing as a professional storyteller since 1976. His stories encompass a range of world folk tales, with a special emphasis on trickster hero stories. He started working as the Resident Storyteller for the Dutchess Arts Camp in 1985. A couple of years ago, Jonathan was one of only 10 teachers statewide to be accepted in to the NASA Astrobiology Teachers Academy. How cool is that?
