PRESIDENT’S COLUMN By Jack Blann Our reunion at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas this Month was a richly rewarding experience. We had the honor of having 5 of our WWII vets joining us and our attendance was the highest since Reno. The hotel was a great venue with it’s many amenities and awesome buffet. Our fellowship with shipmates was an exceptional experience. The association business meeting focused on our financial positions and the need to keep costs of our reunion meetings as economical as possible. The voluntary annual dues are not keeping up with the costs to produce a quarterly mail out and so we need more shipmates to step up to the plate or we may be forced to cut back the number of issues. Also, Jene Cain needs more shipmates to submit articles. The financial status of the reunion account is sound and the consensus is to continue to find ways to have our meetings with reasonable costs to encourage greater attendance. To this end we voted to have next year’s reunion at Las Vegas again and at Sam’s Town. The tentative dates are October 5 th thru 9 th 2014. Las Vegas 2013 Reunion Attendees Comments By Ed Nelson, RM3, 45-46 As of now, it very well could be we are headed to a three-peat of meeting at the Sam's Town Hotel & Gambling Hall in Las Vegas for the annual Shields' Reunion.

This year attendance was the second highest since onset at Reno, some ten years ago. And why not when the room rate amounted to $35/night, including taxes, with lodging off the beaten path, but close to the strip, a small world of everything within itself. Another draw was Mystic Falls Park, an atrium at the center of the hotel featuring a mountain almost ten stories high, sounds of a rolling waterfall amidst live trees, with animated wild life, the chirping of birds, and a wolf's call with a free laser light and water spectacular every evening.

Further, for those interested in gambling, the house has 2,200 slot machines of all sorts for your pleasure. Also on site, a bowling alley and theater. For fine dining, our choice was the Firelight Buffet for breakfast. This featured a host of selections including a 'senior self-serve one-stop prune bar' and two-sided crisp Iowa bacon. All for $6 each with on-site discount card. Fine dinner dining here includes a prime-rib steak with trimmings for only $10. For further casual dining, there are ten other restaurants including McDonald's and their dollar menu plus Subway, and TGI Fridays to name 3.

Entertaining to the limit were tours to the Mandalay Bay Shark Reef Aquarium; the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop; and the Mob Museum to name a few. So relaxing/satisfying was Tuesday, a do-it-yourself day of your choosing, you name it, sky's the limit.

Fellowship in the Hospitality Suite couldn't have been sweeter with snacks while chewing the fat with shipmates and their wives after a whole year apart. You will not want to miss the next reunion as we think of the verve that Bill Armstrong, WWII Shipmate, had who enlisted a helper to accompany him here all the way from Smyrna Beach, FL, in a wheel-chair, mind you.

Our goal is to assure at least one other shipmate attends next year with personal contact and encouragement till then. Let's see who can be responsible for bringing the most with their best “sailsmanship.”

Thanks Board of Directors/Wives, you are first class and one of a kind!! See you there next year, rain or shine. Ed (45-46) & Arlet Nelson

Atrium at Sam’s Town is also the location of the Mystic Falls water, light and sound show presented several times during the day.

Las Vegas Reunion 2013 Recap

Sunday arrival and check in to the hospitality suite. If you are a first timer you are welcomed and made to feel at home. Snacks and beverages are available.

Monday is tour day for those who signed up.

We loaded the bus at the hotel and were off to the Mandalay Bay to visit the shark tank and aquarium.

Lunch was at Bob Taylor’s Ranch House a throwback to Las Vegas dining in the fifties. Next we are off to the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop home of The History Channel’s Pawn Stars. Boarding the bus we head to the Mob Museum which showcases both sides of the notorious battle between organized crime and law enforcement. With our tour complete we return to the hotel.

Monday evening at the hospitality suite it was Monday Night Football with beer, beverages and several kinds of pizza served for us to enjoy.

Tuesday was “plan your own day.” The hospitality suite was open from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Three tours were available for you to sign up on your own. They were the Hoover (Boulder) Dam tour, the Grand Canyon or a Las Vegas Casino Tour.

An early evening walking tour to the Aces & Ales Brewpub was available for a beer tasting. The pub had twenty brews on tap and a selection of seventeen bottle beers. Plus very good food.

Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. the members annual business meeting was called to order in the hospitality suite. Besides the normal business matters two new shipmates were elected to our board of directors. The decision of our next reunion location was discussed and a return to Las Vegas was the overwhelming choice.

After lunch the first annual USS Shields Bowling Tournament was held at the Sam’s Town Bowling Alley which has 56 lanes on the property.

Our reunion wrap up started with the evening buffet at Sam’s Town. We concluded the evening with the raffle in the hospitality suite.

Thursday was departure day and goodbyes until next year.

Editors Note: The following was written by David Murphy, LTJG, 57-60. His story is historical fact with imaginative characterizations creating an entertaining adventure.

My Month On the Arrow (Τ/Β Βέλος)

My name is “Alexander”, but everyone calls me “Alex”. I proudly served on the SHIELDS and was discharged long before 1972 when she was transferred to Brazil.

I am much older now. My hearing is bad. I can’t hear birds chirp. My eyesight is so poor I can’t see individual leaves on the trees. I have a beer-belly which hangs over my belt. What little hair I have is grey, and white. My muscles ache a bit when I exercise. All my activities are more limited than when I was younger, but I still like to go deep sea fishing.

Recently, something strange happened to me on a fishing trip. I’m not sure it was real, so I’ll tell you about it and let you decide for yourself. My fishing line got caught on something. It was heavy, so I hauled in the line gently. On my hook was an amphora. You know, one of those funny looking clay urns used by the ancient Greeks to transport all manner of things. Each has two handles and a pointed bottom.

I was surprised to see the cap of this amphora still held in place by a lead band. I wondered what was inside. Maybe it was something of value. When I loosened the lead there was a loud “pop” like opening a Champagne bottle. Out came a spray of salty water and a larger-than-life, regal, male figure naked to the waist. He had flowing white hair and a curly white beard. His bright blue eyes were looking straight at me. Although he was not young, he was in excellent physical condition. I could see every muscle of his abdomen. In his right hand was a trident dripping with sea weed.

“My god!” I exclaimed out loud, “It’s Neptune himself.”

“No, you stupid pollywog,” he glowered at me, “I’m Poseidon. Neptune was Roman. I’m Greek. And don’t you ever forget it.”

“I’m sorry,” I stammered.

He went on: “You don’t deserve it, but I promised that the mortal who released me from that damned amphora would have a chance to go back in time; to have any job he wanted; and to be young again, but only for a month. So tell me what you want?”

Remembering my enjoyable time on the SHIELDS many years ago, I said: “I want to spend that month as a sailor on a destroyer.” “Fine,” he said, whereupon he grabbed some sea weed from his trident and threw it at me, hitting me square in the chest. Immediately I sensed a warm feeling spreading throughout my body. My muscles stopped aching. I could clearly see each leaf on the nearby trees and could hear the high-pitched tweets of song birds. I was wearing a dress white uniform, but instead of a belt I had a blue sash around my waist. My cap had a flat top and a blue head band. On the head band it read: “Τ/Β Βέλος”

“Wait a minute, Nept…, I mean Poseidon, I’m American not Greek. I meant a US destroyer, not a Greek one.”

“Do you want a month of youth or not? If not, I’ll send you back right now.”

I put my hand on my head and felt my full head of hair. I looked down and my beer belly was gone. I felt a stirring in my loins that I had not experienced in many years and thought to myself: “What the hell, why not?”

“Thank you Poseidon, I’ll stay, but please tell me a bit more.”

“Your name is ‘Alexandros’. Today is 25 April 1973. You are 19 years old and are about to report aboard your first duty station, the Greek Destroyer VELOS (D-16). You will speak only Greek, no English. This trip back in time is a secret between you and me. Don’t tell anyone or terrible things will happen. Do you still want to go?”

“Πάµε!” I enthusiastically responded.

“Goodbye. I’ll see you in a month”. In a flash Poseidon disappeared. Suddenly a tornado picked me up and next thing I knew I was at the foot of the gangplank of VELOS. I looked at the draft numbers on her hull and saw a “6” and a “7”. I knew SHIELDS had a draft of about fifteen feet and figured these must be meters. I presented my orders to the Officer of the deck who introduced me to Thalis, the petty officer of the watch.

Thalis helped me find my bunk and then offered to give me a tour. We started on the bow where I could see the anchor chain shackled to a large mooring buoy exactly as we did on the SHIELDS in San Diego Bay.

I looked in 5”/38 mount number one and recognized everything, the seats for pointer and trainer, the ammunition hoists, everything.

Continued  from  the  prior  page.

We climbed the ladder to the bridge and went into the wheel house. I was sure I was back on the SHIELDS. The wheel and the compass were the same. Thalis pointed to the engine order telegraph and told me it was in English because the Greek government got VELOS from the USA. Thalis said I’d have to learn a few words of English before I could stand bridge watches. I kept my mouth shut about what I knew, fearing Poseidon’s wrath.

Thalis told me that the keel of the ship, now called VELOS, was laid in Boston on 20 February 1942. She was launched as the USS CHARETTE (DD-581). I reflected that the keel of the SHIELDS was laid on 10 August 1943, less than six months later. Since the hull numbers differ by only fifteen (596 – 581 = 15), I did not expect to see many differences between VELOS and SHIELDS and I did not.

I peered into the Captain’s sea cabin and noted that the old man’s bunk was not on gimbals. I wondered if that was because storms in the Med’ are less severe than Pacific typhoons, but I am not sure.

We passed the familiar flag bags, climbed down the ladder and went into CIC (Combat Information Center). There I saw the same light boards where, standing behind them, I learned to write backwards so my shipmates in front could read what I wrote. The wardroom was the same as was its small galley. Some officers were talking about the fact that a military Junta was ruling Greece. I got the impression that they longed for a return of democracy.

Down the ladder into “Officers’ Country” and “CPO quarters” all was pretty much the same as on the SHILEDS. The ships office was the same except the file labels were naturally in Greek. Back on the main deck we entered the ship’s galley. The steam-driven cooking vessels were smaller. I asked Thalis about the ship’s complement and he said it was about 200. I think that of the SHIELDS was about 320, but do not well remember.

Back on the main deck I pointed to a hatch. Feigning ignorance, I said: ‘Where does that go?

“The forward fire room!” was Thalis' answer as he opened it to let me see all the asbestos lagging on the steam pipes. When I asked Thalis where the hatch to main engine control was, he said he did not know.

“I think I can find it,” I said, and I did. Except now it was inside the superstructure. In fact the VELOS deck houses appeared to be a bit wider

to provide access to some engineering spaces from inside the ship. This may have been done to make the ship more resistant to ABC (Atomic, Biological, and Chemical) attack, but I’m guessing.

The five torpedo tubes were empty but at the ready. On the starboard side was the loading machine exactly like the one where I man-handled many projectiles and an equal number of power cases during my training on the SHIELDS.

The fantail had almost nothing on it – all the better to clean it in case of an ABC attack, I thought. The stern had a single rack for dropping depth charges, but all “K-guns” had been removed from the main deck.

Thalis turned to me and said: “Alexandros, that completes our tour. What else would you like to know?”

“Can you tell me about the old man and our next assignment please?”

“The captain is Commander Nikolaos Pappas. Everybody respects him. He is worried about the military Junta now in charge. There may be trouble. We shall soon set sail for joint NATO exercises near Fiumicino, Italy.”

I thanked Thalis and enjoyed the next few days at sea en route to Italy. Continued on the following page

Continued from the prior page. On 23 May 1973, while VELOS was anchored about four miles off the coast of Fiumicino, Italy; all hands were ordered to muster on the fantail. As soon as we were all assembled, Captain Pappas appeared. His brow was wrinkled and I could see he was not happy.

His speech was slow and deliberate: "Officers and men of the VELOS. I have just learned that a military Junta in control of the Greek democracy has jailed many fellow officers without reason. VELOS has received orders to return to Greece. I shall not follow those orders. My oath is to the proper, democratically-elected government of our country, not the illegitimate Junta. VELOS shall remain anchored here in Italian waters and I shall remain on board. All officers and men who wish to return to Greece may freely do so."

Cheers went up from the crew and all but a few decided to stay on board. After answering a few questions the Captain left and we were dismissed. I sought out my new friend, Thalis.

"What are you going to do, Thalis?" I asked.

"I don't know. I must think about my wife and child back in Greece. Alex, this is mutiny. The government could hang every one of us. I have to think about it."

"I’ll think about it too," I said.

Late that night I was deep in thought on the fantail when a great wave approached us. That wave was so big that I thought it would clearly sink VELOS, but it passed under her without making her roll, pitch or yaw at all. After the wave had passed harmlessly, there was Poseidon in all his glory standing in front of me.

"Your time is up ‘Alex’. You must go back."

"But I don't want to go back," I protested. "What will happen to Captain Pappas and to my friend, Thalis?"

Poseidon, clearly displeased, scowled at me and said: "That's no concern of yours. Their fate is left to history." He then grabbed a handful of sea weed and threw it, knocking the breath right out of me. But this time it was ice-cold and sent a chill throughout my body, making my hair fall out, weakening my hearing and my eyesight and restoring my beer belly. I found myself back in the USA with my fishing rod in my hand and only an old beer can on the hook of my line.

And it’s all true, so help me Neptune, err . . . Poseidon.

Truth versus Fiction

On 5 June 2013 I toured VELOS while she was anchored at Faliron Bay, a $20 taxi ride from the center of Athens, Greece. The public is normally confined to the VELOS main deck. When I told the petty officer in charge of my service on the SHIELDS, and pleaded with him to let me see the bridge and a few other spaces, he made seaman Thalis (his real name) available to escort me. Thalis showed me the spaces which are described in the fictional story and which the public does not normally see.

Alex is fictional, but what Alex saw, I saw. Captain Pappas is real. He spent years in political asylum in Italy. After return of democracy in Greece he was pardoned and returned to duty. He retired as a Vice Admiral. He died on 5 April, 2013 at age 82. His speech to the crew is completely fictional, but is consistent with his views.

The political situation was complex at the time. If you want to know more about it, Google: “The VELOS mutiny”.

The VELOS is also a museum to democracy. Most of the entire after deckhouse, including the space originally occupied by the crews’ head, is a museum dedicated to the events of 1973.

"Βέλος" in Greek is written "Velos" in English and means "Arrow". My thanks to Nell Robertson, my Australian shipmate who helped me sail my yacht SEA SYMPHONY to Greece not far from Velos and who edited and advised me on this, my first attempt at fantasy.
