As the speaker describes the appearance of the apparition of Jacob Marley, we are reminded.
of this character’s purpose to enlighten Ebenezer Scrooge about his upcoming persecution and unrest.
This moment marked by choices that intentionally harm others’ welfare and will soon cause Scrooge to
beg for redemption because of such disparate actions. Scrooge’s heart, overwrought with spite for others,
himself and the season at hand, will soon demand that changes occur within. With Marley’s spectral
appearance, Scrooge will be forced to reassess his ways and make dynamic life changes to avoid the
same, unrestful fate of afterlife. As shown in the quote,
“The chain he drew was clasped about his middle. It was long, and wound about him like a tail;
and it was made of cashboxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses
wrought in steel”(13 Dickens). Would Scrooge not heed this warning to forge ahead and help
his fellow man and family, a similar heavy-weighted chain of binding procurements will be Scrooge’s fate. Scrooge could redeem himself of such a
