Chapter 1 – Create New Template“The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say”. – Anais Nin

In this chapter, we will take a look on how to create an attractive and user-friendly user template for user manual. We will learn how to set the Page Layout settings, which will help us in selecting the format, fonts and look of the document. After, the Page Layout, we will do the design work with Odd and Even pages, finalize the template and then create a style guide. At the end we will convert the user manual into PDF with security locks, so that no one can change the template.

Controlling the Design and AppearanceThese menus, Home, Page Layout and View are important for setting the look and feel of the document. Page Layout gives the design for the user attraction and View gives the template designer/technical writer how to adjust the design with the help of tabs, ruler and more.

Document view:

Your template should always be in the Print Layout mode. It will continuously give you the preview of how the document is going to look when printed.

Selecting tabs:

1. Select Home from the menu bar, as shown in above figure.

2. Move to the Paragraph box, and select the tab option .

3. This will activate on the document. It is only visible to the writer and it helps in putting tab spaces, measuring the exact tab stop positions, view where the empty spaces are and how the breaks are positioned. It is extremely important if you are writing a manual; tend to go out for printing.
