USEFUL INFORMATION Getting to Deal and White Cliffs Country The following details will help you plan your visit.

By Road The M20 and M2 connect directly to Dover then take the A258 to Deal making an easy 2 hour drive from the centre of London. National Express Coaches operate services to and from London, Victoria Coach Station.

By Rail Deal station is just a short walk from the town centre and is served by frequent High Speed trains from London St. Pancras (journey approx 1.5 hours). Eurostar passengers connect at Ashford for a 40 minute journey to Deal.

By Air Heathrow is approx 2 hours’ drive, Gatwick and London City airports are approx 1 & 3/4 hours’ drive.

Getting Around Local buses run throughout the day but less frequently in the evening. Timetable information is available from Deal Visitor Information centre and Stagecoach East Kent Buses. Local taxis are also good value. Frequent trains to Dover, Folkestone, Sandwich and Ramsgate. For Canterbury East, change at Dover, or change at Ramsgate for Canterbury West.

By Bicycle White Cliffs Country has a network of cycle routes, and cycles can be hired from ‘Hutchings Motorcycles’, 7 South Street, Deal, CT14 7AW, or from ‘Mike’s Bikes’, next to Deal Train Station. Full details from the Visitor Information Centre

This guide will help you to discover Deal’s many and

Deal is a perfect town by the sea – and its

characters throughout history. Delve beneath the surface and you’ll hear tales

of Julius Caesar’s landing; Nelson and Lady Hamilton’s trysts; smuggling and

shipwrecks on the Goodwin Sands and the dazzling parties thrown by Noel Coward. Whether it’s Ian Fleming apparently naming 007 after the Deal to London bus, or the Carry On cast getting up to their usual shenanigans on a weekend away, Deal embraces all

forms of creativity. Indeed, writers, artists and performers are still a strong presence, with

For its size, Deal boasts an astonishing number of shops selling expertly-sourced vintage goods including furniture, clothes, vinyl records, collectables, books and object d’art! The Saturday market includes an ever-changing array of stalls selling yet more pre-owned delights. The High Street is also home to a handful of creatively-curated charity shops and the annual Braderie street market, which takes place in September, has bargain hunters flocking from far and wide.

Foodie DealIf cooking with local ingredients, sourced from small, independent food producers is your thing, then a stroll down Deal High Street will get your taste buds tingling!The High Street boasts decadent delis and cheese shops; fabulous fish mongers (as well as regular catches from boats on the beach); independent butchers supplying Kentish meat and poultry; artisan bakeries offering sweet and savoury treats and green grocers stocked with locally-grown produce. During the week on Wednesdays & Fridays the local produce market can be found in the Town Hall undercroft and on Saturdays, Deal’s main market transforms the north end of the High Street. Grab your shopping bags and prepare to be spoilt for choice!

SEAFRONT AND PIERNot only one of the last piers to be built in England but a variety of pubs & restaurants and a seafood stall snuggle on the seafront. Just past the fishing boats pulled up onto the beach you will find Henry VIII’s powerful coastal fortress. Stunning views to the Goodwin Sands, where countless ships have met their fate. Take an entire week-end to refresh in the salty air, strolling along the coast to Walmer and beyond or dangling a line from the pier. While many hardy locals swim from Deal beach all year round, taking a dip on a bright summer’s day is an unforgettable treat for even the most fair-weather swimmers. In the summer you can catch the

rowing and sailing regattas or, later on, enjoy the fair and carnival parade with its floats and fancy dress. Deal retains its original amusement arcade, and its old school magic will keep the children entertained for hours with ‘shove penny’ & candyfloss.

BEYOND THE SEAFRONT AND PIERBeyond Deal Castle, following the seafront south along the Strand, you will pass the paddling pool, the Deal Memorial bandstand on Walmer Green, the lifeboat station, beach huts and sailing club before reaching the beautiful Walmer Castle and Gardens.

WALMER STRAND, PADDLING POOL & MEMORIAL BAND STANDThere are a variety of shops and cafes along the Strand facing Walmer Green where the bandstand is a memorial to the Royal Marines. During the summer months popular band concerts are held here and you can relax on the green with a picnic or sit outside one of the local hostelries. Admire the former Marines’ barracks & School of Music whose Georgian character has been preserved. The popular paddling pool for children 10 years and under, comprises changing rooms and toilet, a refreshment kiosk selling hot and cold snacks. (open summer only) 01304 375029

Deal is a fascinating castle to explore with breathtaking views as you wander round the mighty battlements. WALMER CASTLE & GARDENS This Tudor castle has been transformed over the years into an elegant home and residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Today visitors can see the principle rooms and enjoy the garden created for the Queen Mother’s 95th birthday. National Cycle Route 1 From Deal to Sandwich Take route 1 north from Deal Pier along Beach Street, then inland to cross marsh-lands drained by medieval monks, past golfers and sand dunes under huge skies. Look out for all the sea birds and rare plants; stop for a picnic on the beach or in the dunes.

National Cycle Route 1 From Deal to Dover Start in Deal near the spot on the beach where Julius Caesar landed in 55BC and head south. In Walmer, the path passes the Castle and Walmer Green, with the Lifeboat House, cafes and paddling pool - ride slowly and be especially careful of pedestrians along this stretch. At Kingsdown the route again leaves the road to follow a shared path next to the wide peaceful shingle beach, colonized by rare plants and with spectacular seashore views. The route to Kingsdown follows an off road track across open downland with lovely views but it is unlit, so not to be recommended at night.

The Miners’ Way Cycle Trail A new 30 mile route which explores the beautiful lower slopes of the North Downs between Deal and Shepherdswell, past what remains of old coal mines opened in a twen-ties rush for “black gold”. Starts at Sholden

on one of the first cycle tracks in the country, alongside the A258. Look out for interesting local churches, many birds including skylarks.

The Skylark Trail The country road to Dover Starting from Victoria Park near Deal Station following an off route avoiding traffic to Walmer Station. From there the route heads out into the country, over the level crossing, past Ringwould (lovely old church and yew trees, and a fine pub). Great views of open countryside, old woods and hedgerows –

listen to the skylarks.

Betteshanger Country Park This park is a nature re-serve encompassing 200 acres of natural beauty with added facilities in-cluding rambling, walking, bird watching as well as a road race cycling circuit, BMX Track, cross country running and orienteering facilities. Betteshanger Country Park This park is a nature re-serve encompassing 200 acres of natural beauty with added facilities in-cluding rambling, walking, bird watching as well as a road race cycling circuit, BMX Track, cross country running and orienteering facilities. SMUGGLING The town of Deal had become a notorious haunt of smugglers as early as 1745, and was well deserved to be dubbed ‘a sad, smuggling town’ by an 18th century writer. That smuggling was going on was obvious not from activity in the town, but from lack of it.

The smugglers used secret tunnels and underground hiding places to steal their goods away from ships. Many of these tunnels remain hidden away, especially in the seafront conservation area.

Smuggling in Deal became such a nuisance to the Prime Minister William Pitt that he sent the troops in. The townspeople were forewarned (by carrier pigeon), and turned out in considerable numbers to resist the raid. However, the military prevailed by sheer force of numbers, they marched down to the beach, where the smugglers had pulled their boats well above the high-water mark to secure them from the storms. The military set fire to all of them in front of their outraged but helpless owners.

Despite this setback, smuggling soon resumed in the town, and continued to enjoy the support of much of the community. To add insult to (near) injury, in 1817 the Mayor of Deal ordered the arrest of the midshipmen, accusing them of assault on the free-traders! Smuggling even continued in the town in a small way into the last quarter of the 19th century, long after the free-trade had been effectively snuffed out elsewhere. 14 MARITIME DEAL The treacherous waters off Deal demanded pilots with specialised local knowledge.

15 TIMEBALL TOWER Built in 1820 it stands on the site of the Old Naval yard. Connected directly to Greenwich, it gave accurate time signals to ships achored off Deal.

16 WALMER CASTLE It is the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.

17 WALMER STRAND The open, shelving beach near here was almost certainly the landing place of Julius Caesar whose Roman fleet invaded Britain in 55BC

DEAL TOWN HALL The present Town Hall was built in 1803. The Grade II listed structure was built as a Market House, Gaol with four cells, Council Chamber, a room for Magistrates and it has housed the town fire engine in the past. The Town Hall is now the office for Deal Town Council and also the home to some stunning oil paintings and artefacts of Deal.

On display in the Mayor’s Parlour is the original Deal Charter written in Latin, and signed and sealed by King William III on 13th October 1699. It was this document that gave Deal the standing of ‘A Borough and a Market Town’.

The portrait of William III in the Town Hall Chamber is attributed to a follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller whilst the portrait of Elizabeth Carter – a resident of Deal and one of the original Bluestocking Circle - is signed by Joseph Highmore who attended the academy of Sir Godfrey.

The Mayor’s Parlour also houses an original watercolour ‘Deal in a storm’ by renowned artist JMW Turner. Viewing of the Town Hall, the paintings and other artefacts is by appointment only. Please contact the number below for details.

DEAL MARITIME AND LOCAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Housed in an old industrial building on the site of a former market garden, Deal Maritime and Local History Museum itself has as rich a history as the exhibits it displays and cares for within its walls.

The displays portray the changing history of Deal, Walmer and the surrounding area. It is packed to the rafters with fascinating glimpses into the past.

The Museum holds a number of Deal boats including the Saxon King, built in 1891 and a Dunkirk

“Little Ship.” There is also a wonderful collection of model boats. Visit the Museum to find out more about the impact of the Goodwin Sands on Deal and tales of smuggling and lifeboat rescues.

Browse the information on the famous people who have lived in the area, the Hooden Horse which delighted children on Christmas Eve, local industries and shops and the impact of the Royal Marines in Deal.
