Recommendation on Disinfectants For a disinfectant to be effective, surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all traces of organic matter.

Many virucidal disinfectants have been shown to be effective in inactivating porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and swine delta coronavirus (SDCV) which are novel swine enteric coronavirus diseases (SECD). One-Stroke Environ (Phenol), Virkon, Virocid, Synergize (quaternary ammonium and glutaraldehyde) and Clorox are examples of such disinfectants1. Other similar products may well be added to this list in the coming months. In this document, each proposed disinfectant has been shown to be effective against PEDV by the manufacturer. In some cases, this effectiveness has been estimated in function of that established against similar viruses (Transmittable Gastroenteritis or TGE, human coronavirus, etc.), while in other cases, it has been tested by an independent laboratory, and the report or the test results have been sent to us.

When used outdoors (e.g.: in a garden sprayer), disinfectant solutions must be regularly changed to remain effective. Ask your supplier what the manufacturer’s recommendations are in this regard. For example, a Virkon solution must be changed as soon as the pink colour indicator disappears and the solution becomes whitish, or after a maximum of 7 days, while a Virocid solution remains effective for up to 4 weeks. The solution must always be protected from sunlight and extreme temperatures.

A particularity of PEDV is its resistance to heat. It can resist heat for more than 3 hours at 50°C, but not at 60°C. Exposure for 10 minutes at 80°C is enough to inactivate the virus through heat. In comparison, Transmittable Gastroenteritis (TGE, a very similar virus) is inactive after exposure for 1 hour at 37°C.

This document is divided into three major sections. The first section, entitled “Summary Table of Useful Information on Disinfectants”, presents the contact information of distributors for each proposed disinfectant, the dilution rate recommended by the manufacturer, the contact time and, where available, information on its use below the freezing point when combined with propylene glycol. The second section, entitled “Use Protocol when Combined with Propylene Glycol” presents dilution tables for using disinfectants combined with propylene glycol. These tables are generic and may be used with any disinfectant shown to be compatible with propylene glycol, with the desired dilution rate. The third and final section, entitled “Product Sheets”, presents key information on each proposed disinfectant.

1 The following is only a proposal. The EQSP never recommends the use of any product. The EQSP recommends

that users contact their supplier to verify the recommended effectiveness, usage and contact time of products.

Use of Disinfectants in winter The “Use Protocol when Combined with Propylene Glycol” section presents useful dilution tables for cases when disinfectants are used in temperatures below the freezing point (0°C).

To use these tables, you must first consult the “Summary Table of Useful information on Disinfectants”, or the sheet of the product used to ensure that it is compatible when combined with propylene glycol. If the chosen disinfectant is compatible, you must choose the table corresponding to the dilution rate of the desired disinfectant and identify the percentage of the propylene glycol to obtain (based on room temperature and, as the case may be, the maximum percentage of propylene glycol recognized by the manufacturer). You will thus obtain three types of data, i.e. the volume or weight of the disinfectant, water and propylene glycol that must be used to produce 1 litre of disinfectant solution. This data can be multiplied to obtain the desired quantity of disinfectant solution.

Example:

1. Disinfectant liquid: For Synergize, at a temperature of -4°C, the manufacturer recommends a 0.8% dilution rate with a maximum of 10% of propylene glycol. The table available in the “Use Protocol when Combined with Propylene Glycol” section indicates the following three pieces of information for a 1% (1:100) dilution rate: 8 ml of Synergize, 892 ml of water and 100 ml of propylene glycol. To obtain 100 litres of solution, these amounts would thus be multiplied by 100, resulting in 800 ml of Synergize, 89.2 litres of water and 10 litres of propylene glycol.

2. Disinfectant powder: For Virkon at a temperature of -7°C, the manufacturer recommends a 1% dilution rate with a maximum of 20% of propylene glycol. The table available in the “Use Protocol when Combined with Propylene Glycol” section indicates the following three pieces of information for a 1% (1:100) dilution rate: 10 g of Virkon, 790 ml of water and 200 ml of propylene glycol. To obtain 100 litres of solution, these amounts would thus be multiplied by 100, resulting in 1 kg of Virkon, 79 litres of water and 20 litres of propylene glycol.

Useful information on disinfectants after contamination with SECD | November 2014 3

Important notes: 1. When mixing, use the following procedure, as the case may be:

a. Disinfectant liquid: always dilute the propylene glycol in water before adding the disinfectant at the required rate.

b. Disinfectant powder: always dilute the disinfectant in water before adding the propylene glycol to ensure the product is thoroughly diluted.

2. For some products, the manufacturer does not recommend using a concentration of propylene glycol above a certain level. In this case, the information is provided in the “Summary Table of Useful Information on Disinfectants” and in the product sheet. A higher concentration of propylene glycol could destabilize the solution prepared.

3. Propylene glycol increases the viscosity of solutions and some types of pumps may not be able to pump more viscous solutions as well.

4. Propylene glycol does not necessarily keep disinfectant solutions from freezing at very low temperatures (as the required concentration of propylene glycol then becomes very high) or if solutions are kept at below freezing temperatures for long periods. The following additional measures may be used to keep disinfectant solutions from freezing:

a. Store sprayers in heated buildings; b. Use sprayers that can heat the disinfectant solution; c. Use a portable heater to heat up the sprayer; d. Maintain a constant flow of the disinfectant solution in the pump.

Propylene Glycol For the above-described solutions, use pure USP or food grade propylene glycol. Propylene glycol improves fogging by fragmenting the solution drops into smaller particles, allowing for a better distribution and coverage of the sprayed surface. Propylene glycol is water-soluble and is safe for humans. It is also biodegradable. In the United States, propylene glycol is on the list of GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) products as an emulsifier and common food additive.

Note: Never use antifreeze for cars nor glycol ethylene, a product known to be toxic to humans and animals.
