Why use social media?

• Builds your online presence … your digital footprint

• Access to more people, the right people, and more quickly

• Bridge time and location barriers

• Springboard to building offline relationships

VISIBILITY … NETWORKING … JOB SEARCH

Before job searching

• Add your profile

• Professional photo

• Headline – describe you, function, industry and level, your expertise

• Summary – use profile from CV or 30 second commercial, you can also add video/image/document or presentation to enhance

• Recent roles – including key words, responsibilities, accountabilities, achievement

• Skills – start with some, get them endorsed (just ask)

• Activity – share articles from LI today or industry sites to engage

Profile Strength – follow all instructions to get your profile to 100%

Check out “recommended for you” on right of profile

• Build an extensive network

• Ask for and write recommendation & endorsements

A website that allows people to register their account and tweet updates of max 140 characters (hence the phrase micro-blogging)

• Tweet – these are brief text updates of 140 characters to tell the world what you are doing/thinking/reading

• Following – the people or businesses you choose to follow

• Followers – who follow you back

• Re-tweet – re send something of interest you read

• Reply – to one of your followers in response to something you read

• Direct Message (DM) - message received in your inbox

• Hashtags or # - trending words you can search for e.g. #transferable skills, #lookingforajob

Before job searching

• Add your profile

• User name – you have 15 characters, think about incorporating your name to your function to your industry

• Bio – brand yourself professionally, you have 160 characters

• Photo – headshot

• Link to your LinkedIn page and identify both your twitter URL and LinkedIn URL on CV and all correspondence

• Before you start following anyone, start posting tweets – article, industry info, professional news, etc.

• Build your network using Twitter Search and Twitters find people tool

Job searching

• Follow agencies/jobsites with twitter accounts – e.g. Total Jobs, Monster, Jobsite

• Follow companies who you are interested in working for – you will receive regular updates on company news

• Follow employees from companies

• Follow industry experts and thought leaders

Create lists so you keep everything organised (news, company info, job search, etc.)

By following all of the above (and more) – they may follow you back

Engage with people outside of your existing network

Online job search

• Be proactive

• Remember he range of resources online

• Check sites regularly and learn how to use the relevant search criteria

• Don’t define your search too early, too soon

• Electronic job applications also need a brief covering letter

• Compose a CV in plain text form in a word processing pakage

• Make your electronic CV concise

• Set up more than one CV

• Renew your uploaded CV every month or so

• Plan an electronic campaign using a range of social media tools

• Have at least one ‘base’ where people can find your online profile

Health warning

• Make it simple and consistent … avoid confusion

• Keep your private and professional online presence separate

• Check your privacy settings

• Don’t share anything that’s opinionated, discriminating, has religious or political content

• Google your name … remove any unwanted content

• Don’t get addicted … there’s an offline world

Protect and nurture your personal brand
