16 June 1775 – Continental Congress organized the

Army and first Chief Engineers was appointed (Col.

Richard Gridley) under Gen. Washington.

1779 – Congress creates a separate Corps of Engineers

whose mission is the construction of fortifications along

the U.S. coastline.

16 March 1802 – Congress re-established Corps of

Engineers and designated the Military Academy at West

Point as the first engineering school in the U.S. From this

date is continuous existence of the Corps of Engineers

lead by a military Chief of Engineers.

Corps of Engineers Trivial Pursuit 1876 – Henry M. Robert, later Brigadier General and Chief of Engineers

(1901), publishes his Pocket Manual of Rules of Order, a compendium of parliamentary law better known today as Robert's Rules of Order.

1896 – James Connolly, a Savannah District employee, wins the first Olympic Gold medal ever at Athens, Greece in the triple jump. He also finished second in the high jump and third in the long jump.

1904 – The Corps of Engineers took over the failing Panama Canal project and saw it through to its successful completion.

1926 – after the fatal floods in central Florida, the local residents and government commission the Corps to drain the Everglades to avert future flooding.

Sep 1941 – Jan 1943 – the Corps designs and constructs the Pentagon in Washington, DC – 16 months!

Last but not least!

The Savannah District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers did NOT design and construct the Federal “bathroom” buildings in downtown Savannah!!!!! All facilities occupied by the Corps throughout the US are designed, constructed and leased by GSA!
