Poway, CA, Post Office honors oldest living Pearl Harbor survivor

The Poway Post Office honored Pearl Harbor survivor Ray Chavez prior to his trip to Washington, DC, for Memorial Day. At 105 years old, Chavez is the oldest living survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Chavez was accompanied by his daughter Kathleen, also a Navy veteran, and was surprised at the turnout at the Post Office to celebrate his birthday. He joined the Naval Reserve in 1937 and was called to active duty in 1939 serving aboard a minesweeper. Chavez was stationed with his wife at Pearl Harbor when the attack occurred Dec. 7. After the attack, he was assigned to the troop transport ship, USS La Salle, upon which he participated in eight battle campaigns through the end of the war. After he was honorably discharged, he and his wife returned to San Diego. Pacific Area Writer/Editor John Hyatt, also a Navy veteran, found a connection to Chavez: he served aboard the second troop transport bearing the name USS La Salle. Hyatt served on the ship in 1984, during the Persian Gulf Iran/Iraq conflict. Chavez is a native of southern California and eventually settled in Poway in 1959. “Ray is such a joy. We love to see him when we can,” said Poway Postmaster Connie Sallee.

Career events shine spotlight on opportunities at USPS

Field Recruiter Kathy Galikowski answers questions during an employer panel.

Representatives from each agency served on a panel and answered questions from active duty transitioning out veterans and spouses. In addition to the expo at the college campus, Moss and Galikowski hosted another career event two days later, this time at the Military Veterans Employment Expo Career Fair held at the Mortgage Solutions Financial Center. Customer Service Supervisor Janary Johnson joined the duo and presented valuable information to veterans looking to explore career opportunities with the Postal Service.

Customer Service Support Supervisor Erica Moss and Field Recruiter Kathy Galikowski recently participated as panel members for the Military and Veterans Employment Expo held at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, CO. Agencies participating in the Expo included Fort Carson Civilian Personnel Advisory Center, Colorado Federal Executive Board, U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the Postal Service.

In the News……

On May 30, Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) introduced H.R. 2765, the Perpetual POW/MIA Stamp Act, a bill to provide for a First-Class Mail Forever Stamp to honor the brave men and women of the Armed Forces who are still prisoners, missing, or unaccounted. The stamp, which could not be discontinued, would depict the National League of Families POW/MIA flag, and be issued as soon as practicable after enactment of the bill.

Does buying back your

military time make sense

for you?

Formally known as a “deposit,” buying back your

qualifying military service is optional and may benefit

your retirement.

In most cases, if you retired from active duty military

service (immediate annuity), then buying back your

service simply does not provide an advantage.

However if you completed less than a full active duty

career (including those who retired as reservists with

creditable active duty service) then buying back your

creditable military service has tangible benefits.

A military buyback will increase the number of years

in service that are used for your annuity calculation.

More years = larger annuity.

What does it cost?

The basic formula is:

Total Creditable Service Earnings X 3% (0.03) = Total

cost of buyback.

Shared Services can provide you with information on

how to get your total earnings; however, this only

determines the base amount. If you buy back your

military time within 3 years of leaving military service,

this is the final amount. Once a person passes the 3-

year point, interest is charged on the principal

balance. A deposit calculator, available at

www.dfas.mil, will provide an estimate of the amount

of your required deposit. Simply put, the sooner you

buy back your time, the less you will have to pay.

How to "buy back" your military time?

The first step is to call the USPS HR Shared

Service Center at 1-877-477-3273, option 5. Tell

the representative that you wish to buy back your

military time. You will receive a benefits workbook

in the mail containing instructions including what

forms you will need, such as your DD 214, and how

to obtain them. Follow the process in the manual

and once the payment has been remitted (or

payment plan completed) your retirement

computation date will be adjusted.

Ultimately the decision is completely up to you.

However — YOU must take the first step!

USPS Hiring Our Veterans Campaign to go Worldwide USPS has partnered with the Department of Defense – Transition to Veteran program office to promote USPS employment opportunities directly to transitioning service members. These tabletop displays will be placed in Transition Assistance (TAP) offices worldwide starting in July 2017.

Mid-America District Supporting Homeless Veterans

Mid-America District participated in the 25th “Heart of America Stand Down” event in Kansas City, MO, June 2. USPS was among 73 organizations providing a mix of medical, legal, counseling, educational and employment services. The Heart of America Stand Down was founded in 1993 in response to the growing number of homeless veterans on the streets of Kansas City.

Field Recruiter Cari Highley and Army Veteran Monique Koger-Little, a specialist in Operations Support, spoke about the benefits of being a veteran working for the Postal Service.

Participation in this event hits close to home for Koger-Little, who was herself a homeless veteran when she was first hired as a causal mail handler. More than 800 veterans attended this year’s Stand Down.
