Political machine: group that controlled activities of a political party and offered services to voters and businesses in exchange for political or financial support

Jacob Riis used his job as a police reporter to expose the hardships of New York Cities poor.

Patronage: giving of government jobs to people who had helped a candidate get elected

Fredrick Law Olmstead planned the landscaping for Washington D.C. and St. Louis

Segregation passed by southern states to separate white and blacks in public and private facilities

Graft: illegal use of political influence for personal gain

Montgomery Ward and Sears Roebuck launch the Mail-order catalogue

George Armstrong Custer reported gold in the Black Hills and started the gold rush.

Andrew Carnegie entered the steel business and manufactured more steel than all factories in Great Britain.

Eugene V. Debs helped organize a local lodge of the brotherhood of locomotive firemen; organized the American Railway Union.

Sitting Bull had a vision of Native Americans falling from their horses; Defeated Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn

Sitting Bull took refuge in Canada until 1881

Thomas Alva Edison established worlds first research laboratory in Menlo Park NJ. Perfected the light bulb and later invented an entire system for producing and distributing electrical power.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone along with Thomas Watson

Dumbbell Tenements were built in NYC after the tenement house act of 1879

George Pullman built factory for manufacturing sleepers and other railroad cars on the Illinois

Establishment of Settlement Houses for slum neighborhoods

Period following the civil war; known as the Gilded Age

Kickbacks: illegal payments for their services

Ragtime: blend of African American spirituals and European musical forms; led to Jazz, rhythm & blues, and rock n’ roll.

17 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island; the chief immigration station.

Booker T. Washington headed Tuskegee normal and industrial institute.

Joseph Pulitzer bought NY world; his paper emphasized “sin, sex, and sensation”

Sitting Bull appeared in “Buffalo Bill” wild west show.

Samuel Gompers led the cigar makers international union to join with other craft unions.

3,000 people gathered at Chicago’s Haymarket Square to protest. A bomb was thrown in the police line, 7 police officers and several workers died. Known as the Haymarket Affair

1887

Interstate Commerce Commission reestablished right of federal government to supervise railroad activities.

Dawes Act passed to “Americanize” the Native Americans

George Eastman introduced the Kodac Camera

Jane Addams founded Chicago’s hull house.

Police killed Sitting Bull during the Ghost Dance

Passed the Sherman Anti-trust act making it legal to form a trust that interfered with free trade between states or with other countries.

1890 December 1890

Vaudeville Theater performed song, dance, juggling, slapstick comedy, and sometimes chorus lines of females.

Custer’s old regiment rounded up 350 Sioux and took them to a camp at Wounded Knee; a shot was fired; the soldiers open fired slaughtering 300 Native Americans.

A Paiute prophet promised the Sioux if they performed the Ghost Dance their land and way of life would be restored; Movement spread among 25.000 Sioux on the Dakota Reservations.

Grandfather Clause: stated even if a man failed the literacy test or couldn’t afford the poll tax, he could still vote if he, his father, or grandfather had been eligible to vote before January 1st 1867.

Ida B Wells wrote in free speech and headlight urging blacks to leave Memphis after her three friends were lynched.

A populist party convention, known as the Omaha platform, demanded reforms to lift the burden of debt from farmers and other workers and to give the people a greater voice.

Henry Clay Frick hired scabs (strikebreakers) to keep the steel company operating.

1894

Pullmans strike: Pullman refused to lower rents after cutting his employees pay.

William Randolph Hearst purchased NY morning journal; filled it with exaggerated tales, scandals, cruelty, hypnotism, and imaginary conquest of Mars.

Plessey Vs. Ferguson: Supreme Court ruled that the separation of races in public accommodations was legal and did not violate the fourteenth amendment.

Web Dubois: first African American to receive a doctorate from Harvard.

Republicans nominate William McKinley as their candidate in the election.

Democrats nominated William Jennings Bryan to run for president. Lost to McKinley with 6.5 million votes.

William Jennings Bryan delivered the Cross of Gold Speech at the democratic convention. Stating he wanted gold and silver to be part of the currency.

Debt Peonage: system that bound laborers into slavery in order to work off a debt to the employer.

Orville and Wilber Wright designed the first biplane; Its first successful flight was in Kitty Hawk NC.

50,000 Chinese immigrants entered the US through Angel Island. Gateway for Asians arriving on the west coast.
