A USGS Website and Training Materials to Support and Enable

Better Science Data Management

USGS data is a center part of what we do as an agency – data is costly to collect and is one of our most valuable assets

In order to perform data integration activities in USGS, we first need well-managed, documented, and accessible data as a foundation

Why develop a Data Management Website?


CDI community members identified the need for better data management in USGS as a critical area on which to focus

We need to better manage our data such that it can be re-used and understood by researchers now and in the future



CDI recognizes that there are people and Programs in the Survey who are performing good data management. The website will provide a place to highlight and share those best practices

Compliments the Survey Manual handbook

Survey Manual tells researchers “what” needs to be done; the website is meant to provide non-prescriptive guidance on “how” Survey Manual policies can be implemented

Navigating the Website


Highlighted Areas: Plan, Acquire, Describe, Manage Quality, Backup and Secure, Preserve and Publish/Share



For each topical area, there are multiple sub-areas. (i.e., “Plan” includes “Data Management Planning”, “Organize Files/Data”, “Data Standards”, “Data & File Formats”, “Data Templates” and “Stewardship”).



Website content is organized in a consistent manner in each topic area including Description, Best Practices, Key Points, Tools, and Recommended Reading



Website content will be completed, reviewed and approved by September 30, 2012

Migration to NatWeb will occur during month of September

Website will be accessible beginning October 1, 2012

Goal is to use materials in a future CDI-sponsored USGS data management training offered to Bureau employees


Training will allow us to “get the word out” about data management best practices and how to apply them Also provides an opportunity to highlight new data

management-related activities

Training will include hands-on exercises and use of data management website

After training is done, website will be available as a support and learning tool
