To all in the Uplands Community,
Welcome back! I hope you and your
family had a restful and relaxing holiday
with plenty of time for recharging energy
levels for the start of Term 3.
Already this term we have held an UPTA
Coffee Morning, staged a performance by
the Lunchbox Theatre Group, played
football against Dalat and Straits International
School and have sent students to Singapore to play
football and netball. By any standards a very busy start to
the term.
Next we will be staging our very first musical in F Block -
The Wizard of Oz. We hope as many of you as possible
will be able to come to this performance - the first of many
to come.
Finally, I would like to welcome the many new students
and families to Uplands. We look forward to getting to
know you better over the coming months and years. The
school now has 728 students and is still continuing to
interview and enrol new students for the next academic
year.
Yours sincerely,
Matthew Bristow
Principal

Welcome to Term 3. A special welcome to the two new students, Jason Chin (7s) and Ayaka Iga
(9s), and their families, who started in Uplands on Monday. This term is extremely short,
consisting of only eight more weeks until the end of the academic year. It is extremely
important that all students attend school through to the last day on Friday 19th June, when they
will receive their final academic report.
Next week is the final week of timetabled classes for the Year 11 & 13’s before they commence
their external examinations on May 4th. I would like to wish all of the students in both cohorts
the very best of luck and wish them success with their exams. “The best way to motivate yourself is
to stop stressing about what’ll happen when things go wrong and start thinking about how awesome life
will be when they go right”.
Another big congratulations to Ms Atherton and her Lunchbox Theatre students for their
performance of “Our Country’s Good” on Thursday evening. The audience was once again
captivated with the exceptional performances of all of the students in this difficult play. A
reminder that “The Wizard of Oz” production will take place in the MPH on Wednesday
evening beginning at 6:30pm.
Have a great weekend!

My holidays in Australia.
For my holidays I went to Australia, after a six hour flight I finally arrived in Perth. We got our
bikes and rode to our hotel, Perth was a beautiful city which lies in west Australia. On the
second day in Australia I took a train from Perth to Bunbury. Bunbury is a small town where
we got dinner in a nice restaurant, we stayed in a little cabin close to the beach where we went
for a swim. On the next day I got woken up at 6am to go cycling, I wanted to stay in bed as
long as possible since it was pretty cold but my mother pulled me out of the bed to get changed. I
asked my parents how many km we would do today hoping it wouldn’t be too much they told me we
would do 80km I stared at them thinking what how am I meant to do 80km I am already tired after
walking from the beach to here. At 7 we went on our bicycles and started our trip, my brother and I
would fool around or race each other. After about 50km we saw the coastline again cycling along there we
reached a cafe in Busselton where we sat down and had ice cream after that we kept cycling till
we reached after 82 km finally Duns borough where we stayed in a backpacker together with
many other people. For dinner we barbequed steaks n sausages which was fabulous, after
dinner me and my brother played some billiard. I was so exhausted and only wanted to go to
bed.
The next day started of pretty bad I got up and it was raining, my brother was pretty happy
about that because it meant he got to sleep longer and not cycle but around 2 h later it stopped
and we started our tour today it was only 65km our aim was to get to Margaret river. As we
started the rain came back and it poured down, it got cold and windy, we were fighting against
the rain for about 2 hours. The cycling to Margaret River was tough and tiring. My mother
prepared bread for us which we would eat during our breaks. On the way to the Margaret
River we saw many dead kangaroos lying along the road side we even saw a kangaroo’s
skeleton. After cycling for hours we got to a shop where they sold some nuts we bought
caramel nuts which tasted fabulous. We kept cycling then finally we reached our
accommodation I was absolutely tired, I felt sick and my legs were aching. Our next
destination was Nannup it was a distance of 70km. we woke up at 6.30 got breakfast and got
ready. The route to Nan up was one of my hardest cycling days ever. We were on a road that
would only go up and down for 50km it was so hilly and sunny there was no way on this road
to get water since we were running out of water I had to start saving my water. Every time I
cycled up a hill it looked as I was done but it never ended. As I saw the sign Nannup 10km I
smiled with excitement. When we reached there I first took a look around the campus. We
stayed in a little cabin it was cosy and comfortable. For dinner we had pizza and noodles, after
dinner we played some card games. Nannup was a small town with only one super market,
the super market was tiny and there were only 2 restaurants plus one bakery in the town. I
asked about the route we would take tomorrow, what would it be like? My mother told me
4
concerned it will be about the same as yesterday and it was I wasn’t enthusiastic about that at
all. I was cold it was raining and windy, it only went uphill and downhill at some parts it
would go up for 5km which got me very frustrated. We were cycling for about 5 hours. Our
lunch was under a huge tree eating some bread and meat. The landscape on the way to
Manjimup was stunning it looked a bit like New Zealand… the green grass with cows, sheep’s
and horses. It was another tough day and I got faster tired then I usually did my knees starting
to hurt but I knew I had to keep going since I was nearly there anyways. Once we arrived in
Manjimup I was happy that I only had to cycle 19km to get to Pemperton. In Pemperton we
stayed in a house with friends for two days all together we were 8 people. Every night we
would play some games such as taboo which was great fun. My friend and I went horse riding
where we saw kangaroos as well as we went to pet kangaroos. After that it took us another 4
days to cycle back to Perth mainly during farming country and along the coastline.
Finally we arrived in Fremantle and enjoyed the last few days in and around Perth. In total we
cycled about 750km and it was great success.

Last night, students from Years 10-12 staged an Upper School Play called ‘Our Country’s Good’
by Timberlake Wertenbaker. In 1789 in New South Wales, Australia, ‘The Recruiting Officer’, a
play by George Farquhar was staged in a penal colony to celebrate the birthday of King George
of England. ‘Our Country’s Good’ draws upon this historical fact and tells of how the officers
and convicts worked together to stage the play. The piece of theatre is a powerful affirmation
of the dignity and endurance of the human spirit. The themes include the redemptive force of
theatre, the politics of power and gender, the nature of crime and punishment and the ethics of
colonization. Well done to all those actors and technical crew who did an outstanding
performance. Comments from the audience today have been extremely positive and the
students involved should feel justifiably proud. Just like the characters in the play, the cast
developed a strong sense of community from working in a theatre ensemble rehearsing for
many months. Bravo for a wonderful performance!
