I hope everyone had a relaxing time during the school holidays last week and that those who

celebrated Chinese New Year had an enjoyable time. Thank you to the Year 11 students and their

families who attended the IB Diploma Options Evening on Wednesday night. Please be

reminded that you need to submit your option forms to the Academic Office by Wednesday 4th

March. For those students who require an option form please collect one as soon as possible.

Next week sees the English and Mathematics Department showcasing Literacy and Numeracy

Week within the Secondary School. There will be specific activities throughout the week for all

of the students to be involved in. All secondary students will require a novel to read for DEAR

Drop Everything and Read. This will take place for the first 10 minutes of Period 7 throughout

the week. Please also note that the Senior Elocution and Public Speaking Competition will take

place on Thursday afternoon in the MPH (Block F), beginning at 1:20pm. It would be great to see

some of our families and friends attend this great event!

Next Thursday Ms Atherton and Mr Naidoo will take 16 of our budding actors and actresses to

the International Student Theatre Festival in Bali. After being in the audience for the Year 11

IGCSE Drama Devised Exams two weeks ago, I am extremely confident this group of students

will revel in such an experience and will do Uplands proud throughout the weekend away.

Thank you to Ms Atherton for organising this trip.

Finally, I would like to wish Sophie Mueller (Year 12i) the very best of luck for Saturday night.

She will be competing in her first MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fight at the K1 Fight Night event,

taking place at the K1 Studio on Macalister Road in Georgetown. Sophies father, Christian, will

also be competing in the last belt of the evening. The Muellers would love your support, so please

attend the evening and get the Uplands chant going. Tickets can be purchased at the door for

    MYR 10 each.

    Have a great weekend!

I am pleased to acknowledge all of the students listed below for receiving one of four awards at

the recent Awards Assembly held on Monday 23rd February. A brief description of each category

precedes the list of award recipients. A longer note explains some of the tremendous work that

our students have been doing in our wider Uplands Community.

    Paul Rose

    Head of Curriculum and Assessment

    Academic Effort Award:

This award is presented to those students who have been recognised and nominated by four or

more of their subject teachers for showing outstanding academic effort during Term 1 and the

    first half of Term 2.

    Academic Achievement Award:

This award is presented to the two students who have achieved the highest attainment in a

subject, as nominated by their subject teacher. The attainment must be outstanding for the award

to be given and so in some cases there may be only a single recipient or no recipient for a given

    subject.

    Academic Excellence Award:

This award is presented to a student who has received an Academic Effort Award and an

Academic Achievement Award in one subject area or multiple subject areas.

IB Diploma CAS Service and Year 7-11 Service Awards:

Service Awards recognise and honour students who work hard to try and make a difference to

others in their community; who go the extra mile to help and support those who need it. In

November, Year 9 students focused on the IB Learner Profile Caring. After working through

lessons on the benefits of community service, each student pledged to undertake at least one

community service activity of their own choosing. Some volunteered to work with animals,

others to work with young children, some to work with the elderly and others pledged to

improve the environment. There were many excellent examples of students working, both alone

and in groups, to come up with great ideas to help others, but a few students really stood out in

terms of initiative and leadership. These students showed themselves to be resourceful, caring

and made an excellent contribution to the community we live in.

IB students have the ideal opportunity to do service as part of their CAS Programme and last

term there were a group of students who were outstanding in this area.

These students initially became involved with the Stop Human Trafficking campaign in Penang,

and through that experience, established a bond with a new community kindergarten for

Rohyngya refugee children from Burma, based in Butterworth The Good Start Learning Centre.

Refugee children are not entitled to a formal education in Malaysia so without communities

setting up their own schools, their children would not receive an education.

Some of our students decided to try and address this issue by running art sessions for the

children, attending Good Start at the weekends. In the first instance, they had to raise enough

money to buy the resources they needed for their art classes: brushes, paper, paints etc. They

also needed funds to buy paint to decorate the actual room the children use as a school, as they

    had just opened their doors.

Supervisors reviewing these students work have been incredibly impressed at the initiative,

responsibility, leadership and dedication that they have shown in planning and carrying out this

    project, which is still ongoing.

The aim of the IB programme is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people

who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and

respect. These students embody this ethos and are doing a fantastic job reaching out to the local

community to address global issues that concern them.

The school is 60 years old! But why does 60 matter? Do you know that 60 is a magical number?

Why do we have 60 seconds in a minute? Why do we have 360 (660 degrees) in a circle?

Why is 60 so important in Chinese Culture? Why were the ancient Arabs so obsessed with the

What other fun and/or serious facts are there about 60, not just in Maths but in the other subjects

    too?

Show some interesting Maths working with 60 and win a spectacular prize!

Today we have many children from Years 3-6 participating in an athletics meet at USM with two

other international schools. For many this will be their first experience performing in a stadium

just like the Olympics! On Saturday, Uplands will host swimming, T-ball and football so our

FOBISIA Team can gain some competition experience before the actual Primary FOBISIA Games

in June. Saturdays events begin at 8:00am and should finish at 4:00pm. Please come along and

give our teams plenty of support and encouragement.

Next week we begin the month of March which brings us closer to the celebration of our 60th

Anniversary. On Monday and Tuesday all Primary children will be involved in making a video

recording as part of our contribution to the celebrations. The children and their teachers have

been practicing these past weeks and we are all excited to finally perform in front of the camera.

The final product will be shared during the Birthday Party at Uplands on Sunday 15th March. If

  • 17

you do not wish for your child to be part of the filming please contact me at

    [email protected]

Primary Assemblies: Due to the busy schedule we have during March there will be no Primary

Sharing Assemblies on March 2nd or March 16th. Our next Primary Sharing Assembly will be held

on Monday, 30th March, hosted by Year 2 children.

Learning Journeys: Next Wednesday, 4th March, parents of Primary students will join their

children at School for Learning Journeys. There are no regular lessons on Wednesday, and

children will arrive at school with their parents at the appointed time, and leave at the conclusion

of the Learning Journey. Each Learning Journey will last approximately an hour, and students

are expected to wear School uniform. Both teachers and children have been busy preparing for

Learning Journeys, where students will take the lead in sharing aspects of their learning and

progress with their parents. Please note there will be no Primary ECAs on Wednesday.

Uplands Day of Thanks: The Prefects are organizing an Uplands Day of Thanks on Monday,

9th March. This event is an opportunity for the student body to show their appreciation and

thanks to all teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as friends and family. Students have been

asked to sponsor RM3 for roses and cards which will be distributed to all staff members during

a special assembly on March 9th. RM3 donations can be given to class teachers up until Thursday

next week when the Prefects will collect all donations for the purchase of flowers and cards.

In addition to the ceremony, The Do Something Society, the student Council, and CAS students

along with both Primary and Secondary Prefects will be setting up bake sales, a card stall and

fun activities during break, lunch and after school. I am sure the Primary students will support

    this event.

Year 5 & 6 Production: To commemorate our 60th Birthday, Year 5 and 6 are proud to present

their musical production, "ROBIN AND THE SHERWOOD HOODIES". The show will run for 2

nights, Wednesday 25th March and Thursday 26th March at Wawasan Open University, beginning

at 7:00pm. This is an event you wont want to miss. I have my tickets for both performances!

Tickets are available from Ms Karthini in the Primary office. No reserved seating. This weeks

flier was designed by Oliver Hojbjerg 6s.

THERE ARE NO REHEARSALS THIS SATURDAY (28TH FEBRUARY). All Saturday rehearsals in

    March are still on!

    them this Saturday evening.

Calling all secondary students: On Saturday 7th March, a St Patricks Day Parade is being held

at Straits Quay, Penang. Many of the schools, businesses and marching bands in Penang have

been asked to join the parade. Uplands have been asked to participate, so the Year 9 art classes

have been looking at Irish Celtic designs and myths. One such myth is about the Irish giant Finn

MacCool, and the Scottish giant Benandonner. To celebrate the legend, we decided to create four

large puppets as well as parts of the Giants Causeway; the famous geological site situated in

Northern Ireland. The puppets are to be controlled by about 30 students during the parade. If

you would like your child to be involved with this activity, please let Mrs Martinez (Art Teacher)

know by Wednesday 4th March as we would like to know numbers of students who can attend.

    This is a family

event and all are invited. Please see the poster attached.

    Anna Martinez
