MONTH LY & W EEKLY

PROGRAMS

Over the past two months I have attended 2 Electoral Area Services Committee, 2 Regional Advisory Commit-tee, 2 FVRD Board and 2 Recreation Commission meetings.

Have also had meetings with MLA Laurie Throness regarding land issues in our area , mostly about the desig-nated hazard zones in Boston Bar and North Bend. It may be time for a reassessment of the zones.

Have received information from the Department of Transportation that the airstrip is no longer listed with them so they now consider it a private airstrip. I am still questioning what liability issues we would have should an accident occur on the airstrip.

Two grant applications were made through MLA Throness for Canyon Lanes and North Bend Community Center. Thank you Lori Walters and Nancy Carmichael for putting the applications together. The Provincial Government has stepped forward to help with grants: $10,000 towards improving Boston Bar’s Canyon Lanes , and $20,000 to refurbish North Bend Community Centre. Said MLA Throness: “'I like to help the smaller places in my riding that have greater need, and where smaller amounts of money can make a big difference. It's a real

pleasure to be able to help improve places that serve the area around Boston Bar.”

Spent a half day with the RCMP and by-law enforcement people who investigated some property line com-plaints in Boston Bar.

Met with Stefan Brysch, Road Superintendent for Emil Anderson about up-coming road work and concerns.

I spent a day with the Editor and a reporter from Ming Pao Newspapers Canada and Lily Chow, provincially appointed Director of the Chinese Reconciliation Board, as they were seeking to find sites of historic Chinese significance in the Fraser Canyon.

I will also be touring the President of Hope Chamber of Commerce around the area on April 30, and have met with Advantage Hope to see what role they can play to promote the Fraser Canyon.

Will meet with Constable Robert Tumbas and an ICBC Representative on May 5th to discuss the movement of traffic in the Boston Bar area.

Hosted the New Pathways to Gold Annual General Meeting in Boston Bar which brought some business to local restaurants and motels.

I will be attending the Lower Mainland local Government Associations Annual General Meeting May 6th to 8th and Aboriginal Business Match May 11th to 14th.

ALEXANDRA BRIDGE UPDATE: This is a New Pathway to Gold Project (NPTG) headed by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and funded by both. A working group has been formed to prepare a plan consisting of representatives from Hells Gate, Fraser River Rafting, Manager of Historic Barkerville, Emily Carr House, Past Curator of Kilby Store Heritage Site, Spuz-zum First Nation New Pathways to Gold, BC Parks and the Chair of the National Congress of Chinese Cana-dians. This group reports to G. Rattray (NPTG), Tracy Cooper Manager of special projects for the Ministry of Transporta-tion and Infrastructure, Chief James Hobbart of Spuzzum First Nation and myself ( as co-chair for NPTG)

We then report to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

As a point of interest the Director for Area B has brought a motion forward to RAC that would have FVRD, as a whole, fund a promo video of the Bridge and Park so that he can make a presentation to the Federal Government. This goes before the Board on the 28th of April. I have asked MOTI if this would hamper both their and New Path-ways efforts and was that it would probably enhance the case to preserve the Alexandra Bridge.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 604-867-8891—Terry Raymond.

Lots of prizes!

We received a large inheritance but we need your help! Those are the words often written on a letter sent all over the world in an attempt to defraud another person of their hard earned money. These types of scenarios occur far too often in our world and in this month’s edition of the Con-stable’s Corner, we wanted to focus on a topic that you, the community, have suggested for us; Fraud. Just like pretty much everything in this world, fraud comes in all shapes and sizes. Fraud can be disguised in many forms but we wanted to bring attention to a particular scam that has recently appeared in our community. The scam is known as the “Nigerian Scam” and it notifies the unsuspecting victim of a reward for assisting the “fraudsters” with

obtaining their inheritance that actually does not exist. The most common scam typically involves fraudsters promising the victim a significant share of a large sum of money but the catch is that the fraudster requires a small up-front pay-ment to assist the fraudster with the legal costs or whatever it may be that day. The fictitious background story and the eventual request for help come in differ-ent forms such as mail, e-mail or fax and fraudsters are often very good at per-suading their victims. Our goal this month is to raise awareness and give you some tips on how to protect yourself and avoid being their next victim.

T ips for recogniz ing a scam: -It sounds too good to be true: You're offered a once-in-a-lifetime investment that offers a huge return; -You must pay or you can't play: You are asked to send money to pay for delivery, processing, taxes, duties, etc. -You must give them your private financial information: You are asked for all your confidential banking info. -Will that be cash... or cash?: You are asked to send cash/money order rather than a cheque. -The manager is calling: The person claims to be an official, tax officer, lawyer, etc .

While writing this article, I was reminded of a person whom I had met several years ago. As he kept telling me his story, I cringed knowing that the poor guy had been taken by one of these scams. Not only did he fall for one of these scams but it turned out that the fraudsters were able to get to him several times. In total, the person ended up losing almost $40,000.00 over several years. In the case of our friends in the community, the ending is much happier! For that reason, we want to thank them for bringing this to our and everyone’s attention. Please remember that we are here to serve you and if you do have any questions regarding the topic or receive one of these requests, we are more than willing to help. These letters, requests and frauds come in many different forms and if you are unsure of something and you get the feeling that something is not “adding up,” come see Steve, Fran-cois or myself and we will be more than happy to help by going over the letter or whatever it may be with you! For more information on Fraud and how you can protect yourself against it, please visit: http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/english/recognizeit.html

Come Out and Play!

We had a visitor to our recent April meeting of the BBNB Enhancement Society: Agassiz resident, BEV KENNEDY who is a newly appointed member of the Senior’s Advocacy Council. Ms. Kennedy was keenly interested in learning more about our community and the difficulties that our senior citizens face. She shared important information for the benef i t of our senior residents. The Seniors Advocate Act of British Columbia was proclaimed into law in February 2013 as part of our B.C. Government’s Seniors Action Plan.

ISABEL MACKENZIE has assumed the role of Seniors Advocate for the province of B.C. Under the Seniors Advo-cate Act, Ms. Mackenzie, together with her Council mem-bers, has been given a wide berth to examine these perti-nent issues relating to seniors who are 65 and older:

Health Care

Personal Care

Transportation

Housing

Income Support

Fulfilling the obligations of the Seniors Advocate Act, Ms. Mackenzie will:

Monitor services to seniors

Provide information and referral

Analyze systemic issues relating to the health and well-being of seniors and

Provide recommendations to governments and service providers on improvements that can be made to enhance the health and well-being of Brit-ish Columbia seniors.

In the coming years, for the first time in BC history, seniors will outnumber children in our province. The Seniors Advo-cate Act will focus on the highest priorities of seniors, while ensuring that seniors, their families and caregivers have access to information about programs, services and re-sources. For information about government programs and services available to seniors, please visit www.SeniorsBC.ca or call Service B.C. at 1-800-663-7867. Mother’s Day Tea Party with the Garden Club on May 6th at 6:30 pm. Come join us for a spot of tea! Sample the new house-brand tea made special for the Ward Tea House in Yale that is opening this sum-mer! There will be other teas to sample as well as some goodies to nibble on!

Free WiFi is Available to the public at BOTH LIBRARIES which is only accessible during the hours

that they are open. Come on in with your laptop, etc. and try it out! BBESS PAC’S Spring Fling originally scheduled for May 2nd has been CANCELLED.

A PRIL was a very busy month for BBESS. Our Greenhouse Project is still going strong with the

addition of two raised beds for our students to start their spring garden which wouldn't have gotten completed without Rob Dufresne, Patty Thomas, Jeff White and Derek Bowman’s expertise and willingness to do it! Stu-dents headed to the North Bend Community Gardens and with help from Linda Carmen and Derek the two

plots are ready for planting potatoes (Russets & Reds) for the Food Bank. The students were Tyra, Willie, Josh, Cheyenne as well as staff, Mrs. Gray, Mr. Brogan, myself. It was a dirty job but so much fun to see students get their hands dirty making something wonderful for their com-munity. We have great caring youth here in Boston Bar.

O UR Learning Fair was very successful this year. Students shared their learning with community members using a Science Fair format in the

Gym. Students prepared for this event for quite sometime and really shined when they talked about what they are learning in the classroom. We also had our School Board members attend. PAC also cooked a delicious meal and it was a great evening. Thank you to all of you who attended.

P AC will be serving two free hot lunches for students on May 11th and May 25th. Our free Breakfast Program has started for Monday mornings (not Tuesday if we have school on

Friday). If any community members would be interested in helping me in the kitchen please let

me know. (Photos courtesy of Ms. Devine)

On May 12th Strong Start will be having the READY, SET, LEARN pro-gram from 11am to 3pm for fun activities with your preschoolers. Con-tact Amanda Westerlund at 867-9222. Students and Staff are working hard at getting ready for May Days and helping our community out. It will be great fun for all.

A REPORT FROM STUDENT CHEYANNE PASSFIELD ON B.C. LION VISIT: “Today, Monday, April 20th we had some lovely enthusiastic BC Lions football players come and talk to our school. These intelligent men Emmanuel Arceneaux, Courtney Taylor and JD decided to share their emotional, respectful, heart filled stories. We had the opportunity to learn and un-derstand where, why, and how these athletic gentlemen came to be BC Lion football players for our hometown BC Lions. Although the Boston Bar kids loved the competitions, games and silliness those guys included in their presentation for us, that’s not all they did. The most athletic football players on the BC Lions included stories from their childhood past, the good and bad mistakes. We all gave them a big round of applause for their time and appreciation of the sport they truly love.”
