Area Meetingswedding anniversary on June 20. was proud toannounce that during a Washington, D.C. briefing on Non Govern-ment Organizations in the world, she learned that Rotary Interna-tional was in the top ten. President Harley announced that theRotary Club of Frazier Park is having its 3 annual Demotion,Saturday, July 28.
President Harley, then called up to reminisceabout the efforts expended being a club president. She then wenton to fine him $25 for not supporting his business partner,
, at his first presiding meeting at the Rotary South Club.Madam President reminded the club of how wearing your
Rotary pin symbolizes a person of character, a good person to dobusiness with, establishes connection with fellow Rotarians andopens doors. In recognition for compliance the club memberswearing pins were asked to stand. After pointing out the “biglosers” not wearing their pinsand threatening a fine,President Daphne gener-ously granted a pass “thistime”. Those members notwearing pins in the future willbe fined $5. WEAR YOUR PINOR PAY THE PRICE! ScottJohnson was then recog-nized for wearing an assort-ment of no less than tenRotary pins and a Rotarianbelt. Way to go, Scott! Mem-bers celebrating July birth-days were called upon tostand while the membershipsang, “Happy Birthday”, led by Jim Baldwin. After all, it is some-thing to celebrate every day. As the Prez thinks of it, “It is better tobe 5 feet, 6 inches above the ground, than be under it!”
President Harley then asked JanRichmond to describe a new project to celebrate Literacy Month, called Rotary Dictionaries. The project focuses on assuring that all3 grade students have a dictionary. Volunteers are needed to helpidentify local schools with the most need and to assist in deliveringdictionaries to 3 grade students. Anyone interested in supportingthe project, contact Jan.
Our president provided an insightful reading (and excellentreminder): Service is giving what you don’t have to give, givingwhen you don’t need to give, and giving when you want to give. That’s what we are all about in Rotary – to give

introducedExecutive Director
of the Kern County Board ofTrade. Mr. Davis began theprogram with a contrast in theorganization’s 1888 mission – ToExtol the Virtues of Kern Countyto the East – to its current mis-sion adopted in 2006 – To con-tribute to Kern County’s econ-omy and quality of life by glob-ally marketing its unique trea-sures, identifying tourism andfilm making opportunities, enhancing the image of KernCounty as a visitor destinationand creating a unified strategy to meet those goals. Now that’sambitious. The mission is supported by a small team of eight staffwhich operates out of its Oak Street location. The Board of Trade,as the “economic generators”, reports that the economic “BigDogs” of Kern County are: $9.3 billion in Oil Production, $3.54billion in Agriculture and $1.08 billion in Tourism & Travel. With afocus on Tourism & Travel in Kern County, the Board of Tradepromoted the marketable treasures based on experiences inadventure, nature, and attractions.
Why sell Kern County to Travelers? Travel/tourism is a majoreconomic force as the 3 largest retail industry in the U.S., Califor-nia’s 4 largest employer, and 5 largest contributor to gross stateproduct. “It’s big, big bucks to Kern County!” The Kern Countybeneficiaries of actual travel spending in 2005 include: Lodging$169.9 million, restaurants, cars $229.9 million, gas stations$281.2 million, retail stores $181.4 million, recreation $131.8million. These dollars boost Kern County economy by supporting13,610 jobs, and contributing $286.1 million in total earnings,$27.2 million in local taxes, and $10.29 million in lodging taxes. It’sall about the “turns” – the economic multiplier. The total economicimpact in Kern County (economic multiplier x 3) is $3.24 billion. The game plan is to attract out-of-area visits, increase visitors’length of stay and retain local travel dollars. By embracing technol-ogy, the plan will involve stakeholders and improveinfrastructure. Mr. Davis was proud to announcethe introduction of a new tool for promoting
