We also welcome a number of new students starting at our school this term. This week we welcome Indi Boyd (K/1S), Troy Boyd (3/4D) and Montanna Fenton (3/4W). Indi and Troy have come from Northlakes Public School and Montanna has come from Mount St John‘s School in Dorrigo. School Attendance The law in NSW states that all children between the ages of 6 and 17 are required to attend school regularly until they have completed Year 10. From an early age it is important that children develop routines which will support their regular attendance. These routines are basic and include appropriate sleeping patterns (about 10 hours each night for primary aged children ) and regular wake-up times which allow for getting ready and having breakfast. If your child is absent from school it should be for a good reason. You will need to notify the school (in writing or by phone) of the reasons for the absence. Regular attendance is a shared responsibility between home and school. We all need to do our bit to ensure our boys and girls are successful learners. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated. Recycling Quirindi Public School, in partnership with Quirindi High School and Quirindi Preschool, want to make a difference in our community with recycling. The Preschool has been on the front foot in this area and have invited us to be involved. The Preschool investigated where they could dispose of plastic shopping bags responsibly to keep as many bags as possible out of landfill. They have created their own REDcycle bins. The Preschool will take the bags to Tamworth and place in the REDcycle bins situated at Woolworths or Coles stores. We are asking our students to bring in plastic bags so that they can be turned into useful recycled products which will in turn keep them out of landfill, where they have become a huge environmental problem. The Preschool has also investigated easily accessible drop off points for household batteries, old phones and printer cartridges. Tamworth Battery World will take household batteries and old phones and Tamworth Officeworks will take printer cartridges and old phones. The Post Office will also take old printer cartridges. Alternatively, you can send these to school, where they will be collected by our Recycling Officers (see information below as part of The Leader in Me) and we will take them to the Preschool who will take them to Tamworth. (See flyer further on in the newsletter called redcycle). Term 3, Week 1 20 July 2017

There is no doubt, organising your daily routine to remember to bring plastic bags, batteries and printer cartridges to school is another thing to think about in your already busy daily routine, however let’s make a mindful choice to consider alternate ways to reduce our household waste. Coles, Woolworths and IGA will be phasing out plastic bags next year. On behalf of the children and our recycling team…. THANK YOU! Thank you A huge thank you to Margie Taylor who whilst we were all enjoying our holidays worked tirelessly to keep our gardens looking beautiful. This does not go un-noticed by our community and students. P & C We would also like to thank the P & C for kindly donating three hats to each classroom for those students who may have forgotten or have lost their hats. These hats are kept in the classrooms for such occasions so that students can keep playing in the playground with protection. The Leader in Me Our Leader in Me lessons continue this term. We will also be continuing to advertise new leadership positions at our school. The Leader in Me recognises that ALL students can be leaders and have special leadership potential in their areas of interest. The four new Leadership positions advertised this week are for Recycling Officers – two from Years K-2 and two from Years 3-6. These officers will be helping to coordinate our recycling effort here at school. Local landfill containing plastic that with our new program we might be able to reduce in our community!

All interested students are invited to participate in this wonderful program that has historically helped developed outstanding public speakers at our school. If you would like your child to challenge themselves through this great program, permission notes and syllabus requirements are available at school. The Australian Speech and Communication Association is a private organisation and entry fees cover the expenses of professional examiners from the Association. All performances are expected to be prepared and practised at home. Break times as well as some after school and weekend sessions are planned to assist students in the lead up to the exams. The first parent session will be held after school at 3:30pm Thursday, 27 July where any questions or concerns can be addressed. Looking forward to another great year of fabulous performances! Netball At the end of last term seven of our Year 6 girls travelled to Tamworth for the PSSA Netball try outs. Our girls had a very tough day but worked really well together and encouraged and showed great sportsmanship. Unfortunately we won no games but some scores were close. Congratulations to Tayah Riley who was selected for the North West team to play at state in Tamworth later on in the year. Crunch’n Sip Crunch ’n Sip is well and truly alive in our classrooms! Children need to remember to put a piece of fruit or vegetable inside their lunch box every school morning. Children need to also remember to fill their drink bottles with water so they stay hydrated throughout the day. Fruit that comes inside a sealed package is not fresh fruit. If parents could please remember to cut their child’s fruit as this makes it easier and quicker to eat during class time. Here is an interesting fact: A handful of strawberries contain 100% of your recommended daily intake of Vitamin C. They also contain cancer fighting beta-carotene, bone building calcium, potassium and iron. Strawberries also contain natural pain killing substances some of which are included in the manufacture of Aspirin.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Program At the end of last term in the garden we harvested an abundance of 'greens', broccoli, chinese cabbage, cabbage, kale, snow peas and a few eggs. The children then had a quick lesson in vegetable 'families' and plant anatomy as we looked at the structures and similarities in their appearance. We also talked about the nutritional and medicinal properties in eating greens and how asian communities rely on them as a staple in their diets. The children made a beautiful 'asian green stir fry' with a little rice and egg omelette for taste and decoration.
