Beginning Sunday, April 21, New Horizons will depend upon volunteers to provide nursery care for children four years and younger. Joyce Ollendike (the Chair of our Worship Committee) will formulate a list of persons who are trained in Safe Sanctuaries. Cindy Harper (our Local Church Associate, or LCA, for Safe Sanctuaries) will help get additional people trained if needed. When children arrive who need nursery care, the Ushers will call upon people from the list and ask them to staff the nursery on that day.

Working toward the continuation of the music program under the direction of a new Music Director, we developed a job description and determined a new salary. Three candidates are being interviewed p r e s e n t l y ; mo r e ha ve b een encouraged to apply . In the meantime, Raina Linville (and, in her absence, Marie Powell) is providing volunteer leadership for the Choir, until such time as a new staff member comes on board. Please pray for us successfully to find a new leader for our music.

Pastor Heather Morgan invites the congregation to say “THANK YOU!” to the church staff members. In worship on Sunday, April 14 we will acknowledge their fine work and offer prayers for each of them, as we enter into a staffing transition. Whether they are staying or going, each staff member's job is changing. Each staff member has displayed Christ-like devotion to and care for our congregation that has been awesome to behold. You are welcome to bring cards and/or gifts of appreciation, to show them your gratitude.

Our whole congregation was invited to attend a visioning workshop in mid-November. Our facilitator, the Rev. David Hyatt, led us in a process of revitalization of our vision statement. For several weeks after that, I corresponded with church leaders by email to hone in on what they really wanted to say in this statement. After much deliberation, in December of 2012, the Administrative Council voted upon the following new vision statement: “New Horizons is a caring faith “New Horizons is a caring faith “New Horizons is a caring faith “New Horizons is a caring faith community that invites all people to experience community that invites all people to experience community that invites all people to experience community that invites all people to experience the love of Jesus Christ and grow in the love of Jesus Christ and grow in the love of Jesus Christ and grow in the love of Jesus Christ and grow in relationship with God and one another.” relationship with God and one another.” relationship with God and one another.” relationship with God and one another.” We are currently working on developing three or four priorities that will help us concretize our vision.

A Word From Our PastorA Word From Our Pastor

As we live into this vision, our District Superintendent, the Rev. Lynn Dyke, has volunteered to help New Horizons. She recently used Mid-State District funds to bring in a talented guest: the Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey, a Consultant from the Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. Nine leaders met with Sue on Monday, March 18 for a two-hour conversation. Sue spoke to the leaders about their love for New Horizons, current challenges and obstacles, the life-cycle of the congregation and options for our future. These leaders will take a next step by doing a follow-up discussion with Lynn and myself. We will be talking and praying about choosing a preferred future out of all of our options and alternatives. We trust that

God is using this consultation process to break through and speak to us in a fresh, new way. One of the very first outcomes of the consultation process is the recommendation that we hold a worship service of unity, for the purpose of healing within the congregation. Oneness in Christ will help us successfully move ahead to embrace the future God wants for us - a future with hope! We will ask God to release us from any dissension that has torn at the fabric of our congregation, and recommit ourselves to our preferred future. We w i l l ca l l th i s se rv i ce “PRAYER AND POSSIBILITIES,” because it will be a time to focus upon forgiveness, healing and reconciliation. The Rev. Sherry Habben, Director of Connectional Ministries at the Missouri

Conference, will help us plan this service. We will rely heavily upon our retired pastors, the Rev. Elma Certain, the Rev. Tom Adams and the Rev. James Powell, to help lead worship that day. If you have ideas for the service, please speak to me! Please pray for guidance and direction for our leaders, as well as openness, wisdom and insight for the congregation. Whatever we are going through, corporately or personally, we know that God (who is love) is on our side. Jesus is with us: grounding, supporting and uplifting us. The power of that truth can transform us, both individually and as a congregation - so let it!

Sunday, April 28 our worship service will focus on the mission work the Missouri Conference does in Mozambique. Through our Missions Committee, New Horizons participates in this conference-wide partnership. Special speaker, Mrs. Randa Rawlins (Lay Leader of Missouri United Methodist Church) recently traveled to Mozambique; she will speak to New Horizons to share experiences and insights from her trip. The Rev. James Powell, who also has traveled to Mozambique, will lead the worship service. Come to be educated and inspired!

Small Church InitiativeSmall Church Initiative

On the first Saturday of March, James Powell, Lenora Miller, Becky Widener, Diana Baldwin, Pat Fleischer, Carol Oliver, Tom Adams, Luella Adams, and Heather Morgan traveled to Moberly for SCI (Small Church Initiative). James Powell was standing in as an Alternate for Ron Miller, who was out of town. We joined four other congregations in conversation: Hallsville, New Hope, Brunswick, and Jefferson Avenue, Moberly. Ano the r g r oup o f app rox ima te l y f i ve congregations were simultaneously meeting in Jefferson City. Our session was led by the Rev. David Hyatt, a Consultant with the Missouri Conference, who came to New Horizons in November to lead our Visioning Day. All participants received workbooks. Highlights of the day were focusing upon spiritual formation,

assessing our place on the church life-cycle and making a case for hope. Participants came back energized! They have made two presentations to the Administrative Council (during the visioning portion of the February and March meetings), and one brief presentation to the entire congregation during worship. The group also met on Palm Sunday for lunch, to review what they learned from the first session and prepare for the next session which will take place on Saturday, April 6, leaving at 8am and returning at 2pm. Please pray for our SCI team members!

“All the generosity”“All the generosity”

Dear Heather, Paul writes to the faithful these words … I greet you now with all of the generosity of God our Father and our Master Jesus, the Messiah. (Romans 1:7 Message)

“All the generosity” of God and Jesus. For they have given us hope and possibilities, life and abundance, joy and peace, sunshine and snow, family and friends, health and abilities, grace and salvation … and the list of God’s generosity to us goes on and on. As well as your generosity, as the New Hor izons Uni ted Methodist Church, is

appreciated. One of the ways you have shown that generosity is in your faithful giving of 100% of your 2012 Mid-State District apportionments. Because of your faithfulness, we are able to offer trainings for lay persons, leadership development classes and scholarships for clergy, and resources and loans for churches … all with the goal of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. I greet you with all the generosity of our Lord and Savor. Again, thanks for your faithfulness and for your extravagant generosity. Blessings, Lynn Dyke

We have an innate desire to be with other people. This desire comes directly from God and as a Christian there is an even more specific calling for your life in a community. John Wesley taught that being a believer requires community and fellowship. “For Wesley, there was no religion but social religion, no holiness but social holiness. In other words, faith always includes a social dimension. One cannot be a solitary Christian. As we grow in faith through our participation in the church community, we are also nourished and equipped for mission and service to the world.” One of the strengths of New Horizons UMC has been stated by members as the fellowship and sense of belonging to a friendly caring community. In her book, Transformation Journal: a daily walk in the word, Sue Nilson Kibbey poses questions for reflection on this fellowship. What is it that seems to draw me into Christian community? First, God is at the center of the community and sharing the love of Jesus is its mission. What do we who are called into God’s community have in common? Why should I commit myself regularly to be with God’s community of believers? The spiritual growth and support experienced in a Christian community allowed the earliest Christians to begin the incredible task of making disciples of the whole world.

If you devoted yourself to daily Bible readings, deep fellowship, and prayer, how would your spiritual life grow? How does a Christian community and fellowship make me a stronger Christian?

It is the help and encouragement of your Christian brothers and sisters – there is strength in numbers. The verse of the 5 callings from Hebrews reminds us of why it is easier to worship and have hope in Christ in a community of people. “…let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:22-25

As a community of believers at New Horizons we can ask ourselves how our community grows in faith and are we equipping ourselves for mission and service to the world? Are we prepared for making disciples of Jesus Christ? Thoughts provided by NHUMC Radical Hospitality Team (outreach, fellowship, nurture) Excerpts from: Our Wesleyan Theological Heritage United Methodist Communication www.umc.org

What Pharisee enthusiastically supported the stoning of Stephen, a follower of Christ? A. Pontius Pilate B. Levi C. Saul (later called Paul) D. King Herod

Also called the conqueror's cross, the victor's cross is composed of the Greek cross, recognized by its four equal arms, adorned with Greek letters in each quadrant. The top left letters stand for "Jesus" and the top right, for "Christ" (the horizontal lines above them indicate they're abbreviations). The four letters across the bottom spell the Greek word for "conqueror."

It has been said that there are a number of statements in the Bible that seem contradictory to each other, or that are vague enough so that they are frequently debated. However there is one thing that is crystal clear throughout the whole of the Bible. That is we are to feed hungry people! We have an opportunity to do just that at Loaves and Fishes on Saturday, April 6Saturday, April 6Saturday, April 6Saturday, April 6. The new Loaves and Fishes location at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church makes it possible to seat more people. In addition the more spacious layout creates greater distance within the kitchen and between the kitchen and dining area. As a result we it takes more people to cook, serve and clean up. Someone may be calling you in the next week or two, to see if you can help with this important mission.

Offer your acceptance in your own way and with genuine warmth – not overdoing or with insincerity. Most visitors or returning church members decide in the first 60 seconds whether they will return again. The two most uncomfortable times for those who do not know anyone or only know a few are when entering the church and sanctuary and after the worship service. Following a worship service a warm goodbye and invitation to return will have someone leaving with a feeling of being treasured. Never have it said about being in New Horizons United Methodist Church --- “No one said “Hello.” Ref lec t ions f rom the Radical Hospitality Team – gleaned from Igniting Ministries-Rethink Church

Our VisionOur VisionOur VisionOur Vision New Horizons United Methodist Church is a caring faith community that invites everyone to experience the love of Jesus Christ and grow in relationship with

God and one another. We will have more visitors and guests on this special Sunday of Easter and will look forward to sharing worship with them on coming Sundays. Having them know right away we care and we are here to serve them is the best way to show God’s accepting love. A simple greeting smile or words of “Welcome to New Horizons this morning” or “We are glad you are here this morning!” will begin a loving relationship. They may be first time seekers or visiting family members or church members returning from being away from church awhile. If it is someone you do not know, then greeting with “I don’t think I’ve met you yet, I’m….” is a warm non-threatening welcoming. The first and last point of contact is crucial to building relationships. After the worship service, bid farewell, invite them to return, introduce them to others. Another thought, avoid using pre or post service activities to conduct church business to the exclusion of others.

The day was crisp and cool awaiting the snow. At 2pm the sun began peeking out and the children arrived with their colorful baskets and the Easter party was underway. Little ones paraded in their newly made bunny ears as they decorated their bright crosses and jelly bean resurrection prayer cards. A get-together time talking about Jesus and his love and the story of Easter morning ended with an eagerly anticipated egg hunt. Smiles were seen all around and many a picture will hold memories. Many hands and hearts and prayers worked together in this event of giving. Thank you for prayers, for filling eggs with treats, for making signs, assembling crafts, baking cupcakes, decorating and setting up, for guiding the children in their crafts activities, for visiting with the parents, hiding about 1,500 eggs, to James Powell bringing the message of Jesus to the children, for our youth who worked so well with the children, and for those who cleaned afterwards and for the planning by the Radical Hospitality team.
