    Greetings all,

Our board of directors had its first online board meeting on February 2nd. It was attended by our entire ex-

ecutive and board as well as four observers. Although there were a few technical problems, all in all it was a

successful board meeting. However, two hours is just not enough time to thoroughly discuss all the issues t

need to be discussed. I will be scheduling more of these type of meetings on a regular basis so that the boar

can make some important decisions. One of advantage of having online board meetings is the cost. To hold an unlimited number of online mee

ings costs us less than $200 per year. Compare that with the cost of flying nine executive and board membe

to a location, plus accommodations, taxis and per diem expenses and you can see fairly quickly that this is t

most economical option at this time.

Speaking about expenses, our new treasurer, Steve Maybee, has done a lot of work in the last two months

preparing for our online meeting and we devoted much of the time online discussing and approving some

the recommendations that the auditors had recommended in the 2012 Financial Statement and Audit. We

are thankful for Steves expertise and for making motions to get UOAC in a better financial position.

The board of directors will meet in person in Halifax on August 16, the day before the Chapter Informatio

Session (CIS), and attend the CIS on August 17 and meet again the afternoon after the Annual General

    Meeting on August 18.

The Canada Not-For-Profit Corporations Act provides federal not-for-profit corporations with a new set of

rules that are modern, flexible and better suited to the needs of today's not-for-profit sector. Our by-laws co

mittee is working hard to have new by-laws ready for a vote at the AGM in Halifax in 2013. Details will be

sent to chapter delegates at the appropriate time later this year. I urge all chapters to study them when they

arrive and to plan to attend the meeting in Halifax on August 18.

Our friends to the south of us, the United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA), have a conference in

2013 and are inviting their Canadian friends to come join them in Jacksonville Florida. The theme this yea

is Bridge to Acceptance. Registration fees and hotel rooms are very reasonably priced. Activities start on

August 7th and continue through August 10th. To find out more information or to register for the 2013 Na

    tional conference, go to http://www.ostomy.org/conference_2013.shtml.

I would like to offer congratulations to Jessica Grossman who has made the news lately in support of ostom

awareness. If you have not seen it, check out her YouTube video at

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqsguzwEh2Eor visit her website http://uncoverostomy.org/. What a

great way to raise ostomy awareness

I would also like to thank and congratulate Paul Riome from Saskatoon. In September and October of 2012, he and a group trave lled to

Nepal and climbed Island Peak (6189 m / 20,305 ft). His experience travelling, trekking and climbing has been thoroughly documented and

shared with all his followers on his blog, as well as regular posting to Facebook and on our website have been an inspiration to all of us. Paul

even shares some of the details of his ostomy blowouts and the ways he was able to improvise ways to adapt to them. Paul was also joined by a

Gastronaut by the name of Hogus. If you have not heard of gastronauts, there is a great explanation on Pauls website: http://

    www.livingbiggerwithcolostomy.com/ as well as here:

Hogus is from a family of dozens of Gastronaut puppets. These puppets were created to help children understand and become comfortable

with ostomies. Nurses use the Gastronauts to explain to children about their own ostomies, or about their parent's or grandparent's ostomies.

Over 4000 child ostomates around the world have received their own Gastronaut, to help them recover from surgery and to adjust to their

new ostomy and lifestyle. Other Gastronauts, like Hogus, do adventure travel with an adult ostomate, and share what they learn with child

ostomates around the world ... showing ostomates that they are not alone, and that they can live ordinary lives - even extraordinary lives.

More about Gastronauts by TheBowelMovement and their UK Distributor StomaWise, who generously collaborated to create Hogus on their

    website: http://www.thebowelmovement.info/category/the-gastronauts/.

Our next biennial conference will be in St. Johns Newfoundland in 2014. Tentative dates are July 31 to August 2. Our conference chair is

Delilah Guy and the St. Johns and Gander chapters are working together to put on a great conference. We hope to see you all there and take

some time to tour around the Rock and enjoy the unique experience that is Newfoundland.

    FROM THE EDITOR

    Editors Message

Its Heart Month, time to think more of heart health than any other month, I suppose, even though we should be think-

ing about our heart every month of the year.

Why am I, in an ostomy publication, talking about another health area?

Because we all have hearts and without one, we would fail to exist.

But hearts and Ostomates have more in common than just hearts beating in the chest to keep blood flowing and the body

    working.

An ostomates heart beats more strongly than most because of what we do for others.

Ostomates are leaders. We seek out other ostomates who need advice, support, and even comfort as they might struggle

with a change of lifestyle that can be daunting and fear-inducing.

Ostomates are resilient. We have faced challenges in our lives caused by an upheaval resulting from a medical diagnosis or

traumatic experience that creates the need for a bowel or urinary diversion. But we come right back and live normally, doing what we did before, almost without missing a (heart) beat.

Ostomates are upbeat. How many times have you had an accident, bitten the proverbial bullet after uttering a nasty

word or two, made the necessary cleanup and change, and gone back to whatever it was you were doing in the blink of an

eye? If youre like me, you think It could have been worse and proceed to proceed.

Ostomates are compassionate. We become registered visitors and share our stories so others can live well.

Ostomates are open. Were willing to speak publicly, in open forums or through the media, or tell our stories in Ostomy

Canada or in writing contests. We want the world to know who we are, how we've coped and how weve carried on.

Ostomates are giving. We scour for supplies to send to third-world countries through Friends of Ostomates Worldwide

Canada, ensuring those without will have.

It all comes down to heart, doesnt it?

Keep yours healthy this month and every month so it can continue to beat strongly and you can assist those who need,

both in the ostomy community and the greater populace.

    Hello Everyone,

As the past World Ostomy Day/ Canada Day Chairman 2012, I extend my gratitude to all who supported

this special event through out the years from local, national and global level. Mostly to all chapter members,

Presidents of each chapters, United Ostomy Association Executives. Board of Directors and staff of the Na-

tional Office. The three major companies played a major role in making this event a success in 2012 namely-

Hollister Poster for WOD awareness and the Photo contest which we had 4 Canadian winners. ConvaTec

had the Video2012 contest and had a winner from Canada. ConvaTec also provided the 2012 WOD PINS

and were distributed among members. Coloplast had the Coloplast Merits Award which we participated

globally. There is no announcement of the Coloplast Merits Award winners to date.

A special mention to Peter Folk for whom with his expertise on the Website greatly made it a lot easier for

me to tackle all the jobs successfully .Thank you very much Peter.

Also a special thanks to the Gander and District Chapter for the World Ostomy Day pins. We appreciate

    your support.

2013 we will celebrate Canada Ostomy Day. The date will be determined later. It is usually the first Saturday

    of October of each year.

I would like to welcome Lisa Gausman as the new WOD/COD chair for 2013 and wish her the best on this

    challenging venture.

    Sincerely,

    Delilah Guy RN. BN. ET.
