Tempe High School Plan 2018-20 and Annual School Report 2017 These are now available on the school’s website at http://www.tempe-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/annual-school-report This plan was developed after consultation through surveys with parents, students and staff in 2017. The 3 strategic directions are: Strategic Direction 1 Learning To ensure students are inspired to succeed in their academic and social endeavours and to connect and thrive within the broader school community. Information about individual student needs is used to plan for student learning and promote a rich learning environment that includes digital technologies to maximise student engagement.

Strategic Direction 2 Teaching

To provide a rich teaching and learning environment where lessons and learning opportunities meet the diverse learning needs of students. Teaching and teachers in our school will be distinguished by their professionalism and dedication to implementing evidence–based, explicit and effective teaching methods.

Strategic Direction 3 Leading To develop a professional learning community which is focused on continuous improvement of teaching and learning. The school will be recognised as excellent and responsive to its community through the use of best leadership and management practices for whole school improvement. Road Safety Please be aware that dropping students off at the top end of Collins Street remains a problem. Not only is it illegal and dangerous, it is discourteous to the drivers who are trying to turn into Collins Street at a very busy time. Some Parents have taken the sensible approach of dropping students off at Way street or in the safe drop off zones on the Princes Highway. Please drop off students in accordance with the law as outlined on the map in the next column.

HSC MINIMUM STANDARDS TESTS

As you may be aware the NSW Government determined in 2016 that to be eligible for the award of the Higher School Certificate, a student must achieve a minimum literacy and numeracy standard. This came into effect for all students who would be sitting for HSC examinations in 2020. This affected all students

currently in Years 7 to 10.

Initially it was determined that this standard could be met by students achieving at least Band 8 in Reading, Writing and Numeracy in the Year 9 NAPLAN tests. This rule was in place for students currently in Year 10. If they did not achieve Band 8 they were required to sit for additional tests introduced in 2017, the HSC Minimum Standards Tests and achieve a minimum of Level 3.

Students in year 10 who still need to attain the minimum standard have started sitting for the online tests and have been very successful. If a student does not gain the minimum standard this time around, they will be given another opportunity later in the year and over the next 2 years. I believe that almost all our students will attain the minimum standard for the HSC. Parents of students who may not be able to attain the standard will be informed well before the HSC. PDHPE FACULTY Volleyball 2018 During the holidays, our Boys Volleyball Team competed in the first Olympic Park Baulkham Hills Volleyball competition. Everybody began the game a little nervously as we played our first game against Hurlstone Park High School. To our surprise, we won the match in two sets (25-16, 25-19). The second match, against Baulkham Hills, saw our boys gaining confidence and attacking the ball well. Alan, the team captain, scored an amazing 15 points with his serve alone. We battled through the second set and eventually won the match 2 sets to 1. The boys convincingly won their semi-final match 2 sets to 0, putting them through to the grand final. We were surprised to see that we were playing Baulkham Hills again to compete for first place. The team rallied hard, but after a long day, were unable to find the magic that we had displayed earlier in the day. Baulkham Hills ended up winning in two sets with the scores at 25-23 and 25-19. We took second place in the competition and were happy with some major improvements that are happening within the team.

Tempe High School Dance Group We went to Sydney Dance Company to watch their School Matinee Performance titled "ab[Intra]" which is latin for 'from within.' The students were exposed to a contemporary style of dance that they were not familiar with, but we will study next term in class. School Spectacular Drama Ensemble

Last term 11 talented drama students from years 9, 10 and 11 auditioned for the School Spectacular Drama Ensemble. These students worked together to devise a short audition piece using creative movement techniques. I am very excited to announce that all our students were successful in their audition and for the first time Tempe High School will be represented in the School Spectacular Drama Ensemble. The students will begin their creative journey by attending a performance and workshop at NIDA at the end of this term with experienced industry professionals. Congratulations to our amazing actors! Sydney Writers’ Festival 2018

On the 2nd

May, a group of students from Years 9-12 attended the Sydney Writers’ Festival at Carriageworks. This year’s lineup included talks from the comedic Jesse Andrews (pictured below), Alison Croggon, Kirsty Eagar and Patrick Ness, all well-established authors covering a wide range of genres. They each gave insight into their writing processes, their inspirations, and the talks concluded with Q & A sessions. We were able to meet the authors afterwards and have books signed, with Patrick Ness proving to be very popular – he had a line over an hour long! by Tristan Meza Mollo—Year 12

Hospitality Work Placement

Our Year 11 Hospitality students attended work placement at a variety of Hotels located in the city as well as near Sydney airport. This enabled them to improve their food preparation skills and get a taste of what it might be like to work in the Hospitality industry. Some found it challenging and tiring, others found it enjoyable and exciting. The feedback from employers was very positive with praise for their initiative and willingness to learn.
