To The University of New MexicoSchool of Architecture and Planning,

My name is Estanislado Saavedra. I am from Albuquerque and currently en-rolled under the University College at The University of New Mexico. I recently transferred from Central New Mexico Community College. The past two and a half years have been a challenge for me because I left high school with an abso-lute certainty that a career in architecture was what I would pursue. Being as architecture is a highly competitive field, I ambitiously worked to get to this point. I began my college career taking remedial classes (mostly math), which seemed extremely repetitive and somewhat unnecessary. At times this was frustrating, and made me feel like it would be impossible for me to reach the day I would apply to the UNM School

I am not 100% sure about where I would take my career, or what exactly I would focus on, but that is what sets architecture apart from other professions. The chal-lenge one takes on to create something beautiful, not only for themselves, but for everyone that interacts with it, and the ambition to get results no matter how big the problem is. From what I have seen, one can give an architect any problem, and the architect will give back ten solu-tions. An architect is who I see myself becoming, and nothing makes me more satisfied than imagining all the things I know I am capable of doing with this education. Thank you for considering me for your school. I hope to do many great things at this university, and I hope to see you this fall!

Sincerely,

Estanislado Ramon Saavedra

of Architecture. However I am still in the process of completing trigonometry in the summer and calculus in the fall. I also took 2-dimensional design at CNM. The transfer was a tremendous deal for my family and I because none of my relatives had ever attended college, much less, The University. My family has been 100% supportive, and for that, I take pride in being the best that I can possibly be, and hopefully one day, will express this through my love for design. One may ask, Why architecture? Well, I am a very spontaneous and some-what impulsive person. Not saying that I do not have patience, but I need things to constantly evolve in my life. Architecture is a profession that is never static, which I love about it. To me, architecture is a lifestyle, not a job. I view my physical sur-roundings, as objects of design, noticing everything from materials, form, massing, etc... I think about how the architect was faced with these decisions and had to develop a process, and look deep within him/herself as a designer, to create a result. I want to design and build because I want to contribute to the world, a part of myself. I want to leave a trace of what I believe is modern, or innovative, just architects in history have done. Not only that, I am eager to learn to be innovative and train my eyes and mind to see things through the lenses of an architect.

30”x 20” acryllic paint on cold-press illustration board. This assignment was to develop a value

scale and design a pattern to express simultaneous contrast. all values were mixed by hand.

The assignment was to create a simple collage, and match every color using paint mixing techniques. Next, was to replicate the collage on illustration board using acrylic paint.

10.5”x 12” Collage from magazine cut-outs, with acryllic paint on illustration board.

This goal of this project was to create a collage. Next, cut out two rectangles from it, and complete the missing pieces of the collage using the values of the grayscale with acryllic paint.

STAIRS IN PEARL HALL18”x 24” Graphite on Strathmore. The objective of this assignment was to

understand drawing accurate freehand perspectives of the stairs in Pearl Hall, using vanishing points and construction lines.

Introduction to architectural drafting. In this assignment, we were required to apply analytical skills in architectural drawing and design issues. the use of scale and proportion were necessary, and the use of line weights were mandatory. This assignment really refined my technical drawing, and smooth rendering techniques.

zobeide pavillionBass-wood ModelThis model was based on the city of

“Zobeide” in Calvino’s Invisible Cities. This assignment was aimed towards translating an abstract idea into architectural form, focusing on principles such as: Hierarchy, rhythm, balance and proportion. The main goal was to translate a conceptual idea that we took from the story, and design something architectural from that concept.

Right: Plan view. First, second and third floors of pavillion.

In this part of the assignment, I was required to utilize all drawing and drafting techniques acquired this semester to adequately draft plans, sections, elevations, perspectives and an isometric drawing. Line weights were crucial.
