In this lesson, we will review how to:

• Address people using du, ihr and SIe. • Ask people what they are doing and hear their answer.

When you complete this tutorial, you should be able to :

• Ask people what they are doing, using du, ihr and Sie correctly.

Was machst du in der Freizeit? When do you use du, ihr, and Sie?

Du: People you know well: your family, friends, children, animals, and God (prayers). High school students generally say “du” to all the kids in their school, and at the university this is generally true as well (among university students ages 20-25). “Du” only applies to one person—it is not plural.

Ihr: A group of dus. (The plural form of du). For Southerners this is always easier since “you’all” is commonly used in the South to refer to a group of people.

Was macht ihr? Wo wohnt ihr?

Sie: Sie is a more formal you. Anyone in a professional setting (the waitress (regardless of age), the bank teller, the teacher,) will be a “Sie”. Sie shows respect for people you do not know and also draws a line between your intimate and non-intimate acquaintances. Co-workers are addressed with Sie. Sie can be one person or a million, just like the English “you”.
