MEDIA POLICIES AND SERVICESABOUT WASHINGTON The Huskies have won six of eight contests this season under first-year head coach Kevin McGuff, who came to Seattle after a successful nine-year stint at Xavier. Washington returns three starters from last season, while losing All-Pac 12 selection Kristi Kingma prior to the season due to injury. Washington’s strength this season has been its defense, limit-ing opponents to just 54.1 points per game while holding the opposition to 34 percent shooting from the field and 26 percent from 3-point range. The Huskies have also swatted 4.3 shots per game this season. Senior center Regina Rogers has dominated this season, av-eraging 18.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest while shooting an incredible 70 percent from the field. Freshman point guard Jazmine Davis is also scoring in double figures with 12.0 points per game.

LAST TIME OUT Amanda Lawson and Roxana Button combined for 46 points to guide Houston to an 83-60 rout of Houston Baptist Saturday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars, who picked up their first victory of the season, relied on an offensive outburst in the opening half to build a 22-point lead at the break. Houston shot a blazing 56 percent from the field and drained five of seven shots from 3-point range for 54 first-half points, surpassing the season average in the opening 20 minutes. The contest got off to a frenetic pace, with the opening 32 points scored in just over five minutes. Houston Baptist shot out to a 12-7 lead at the 17:22 mark on 5-of-5 shooting before Lawson evened the contest at 12-12 with a 3-point play. With Houston holding a 19-18 advantage with 12:58 remaining in the first half, Lawson took over, converting six of Houston’s seven field goals over a five-minute stretch to push the Cougars to a 32-20 lead. Button followed with a layup and freshman forward Terran Alford knocked down a jumper to cap a 17-3 Houston run in just over six minutes for a 36-21 Cougar advantage. With Houston still holding a 15-point lead with 5:20 left to play in the opening half, the Huskies heated up, draining back-to-back 3-pointers to close the margin to just nine points with 3:26 remaining. HBU wouldn’t score again in the opening half, however, as the Cougars rode a 16-0 wave into the break. Button snapped the skid quickly with a layup and followed the next time down the floor with a bucket from long range. Lawson followed with two scores with under a minute to play before Michelle White drained her second 3-pointer of the half at the buzzer to send the Cougars to the break with a 54-32 lead.

SERIES HISTORY Houston and Washington have only met twice in the series history as the Huskies hold a 2-0 advantage. The Cougars first faced off against the Huskies at a tournament during the 1984-85 season, with the other loss also coming in a tournament setting on Dec. 7, 1996. Houston is 4-12 all-time against current Pac-12 teams and will play its first contest against a Pac-12 squad since defeating Oregon State, 49-32, at Hofheinz Pavilion on Nov. 19, 2009. HOMECOMING FOR WOODS As most of the team will be making its first trip to the Pacific Northwest for Sunday’s game at Washington, sophomore center Mae Woods will be traveling back to familiar grounds. Woods traveled nearly 2,500 miles away from her hometown of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, to attend the University of Houston. Maple Ridge is a suberb of Vancouver and is only 130 miles and a three-hour drive from Seattle. Woods has averaged 5.3 points per game this season and has stepped up the productivity over the past two games, combining for 17 points and 10 rebounds.

UP NEXT After making the trip to Seattle to face the Huskies, Houston closes out non-conference play against New Mexico in Albuquer-que on Jan. 2, 2012. The Cougars open Conference USA play at home against Marshall on Jan. 5, where they will look to extend their regular-season league winning streak to 20 games.

LANDRY TABBED C-USA PLAYER OF THE WEEK It came as no surprise when senior point guard Porsche Landry earned the season’s first Conference USA Player of the Week after a dominating performance to open the season against New Mexcio State on Nov. 11. Landry went off for a career-high 37 points, ranking seventh in school history, while tying a school and conference record with 17 made field goals on 28 attempts (.607). The field goals were the most made at Houston since 1989 and the most in league play since 2005. The Preseason Conference USA selection had 25 of Houston’s first 36 points, and had streaks of 10 straight points and eight consecutive points during the first half. The weekly award was the third in Landry’s career, as the Houston native earned her first two weekly accolades last season.

2011-12 SEASON BESTS


TRUE STUDENT-ATHLETE Senior guard Roxana Button is a prime example of the term student-athlete, starring on the court as well as in the classroom. Button earned Capital One Academic All-District Second Team honors as well as C-USA All-Academic Team accolades for the second consecutive year during the 2010-11 campaign. Button is also a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and Commissioner’s Medal recipient. Button carries a 3.86 GPA in psychology with a minor in chemistry, and plans to attend medical school. The Coppell, Texas, native has averaged 8.1 points per game, playing in all 103 career contests with 41 starts. Button ranks third all-time at UH in 3-point percentage (35.1) and free-throw percentage (76.0) and sixth in made 3-pointers (104).

ELITE COMPANY Porsche Landry became the 21st member of the school’s 1,000-point club in Houston’s C-USA semifinal loss against Tu-lane on March 11, 2011. Landry posted a game-high 20 points against Tulane on March 11, 2011, to reach the 1,000-point mark, and is just one of four Cougars all-time with 1,000 points and 300 assists. Along with Landry, the 2010-11 squad also featured 1,000-point scorers Courtney Taylor and Brittney Scott, which marked only the third time Houston had three 1,000-point club members in the starting lineup (1979-80, 1980-81).

THE NAME FITS Houston’s starting point guard’s first name describes her style of play perfectly, as Porsche Landry often resembles the speedy automobile on the court. Landry slashed defenses in 2010-11 to the tune of 14.8 points per game, which ranked sixth in C-USA. The Houston native flourished in first-year head coach Todd Buchanan’s uptempo style of play, scoring 4.9 points per game higher than her career average entering the season. Landry became the 21st member of the school’s 1,000-point club late in the 2010-11 season and is only the fourth Cougar all-time with 1,000 points and 300 assists. The Houston native is the lone returning starter this season for the Cougars and is poised to break into the top 10 in scoring all-time at Houston and the top two in assists.

REVERSAL OF FORTUNES When Todd Buchanan took over at the University of Houston in 2010, he inherited a team that returned nine of 10 letterwinners and all five starters, including six seniors. Buchanan, the 2011 C-USA Coach of the Year, was able to challenge the underachieving group and it resulted in 26 wins and a perfect 16-0 record in league play, as he became the lone first-year head coach to take his team to the NCAA Tournament. The makeup of the 2011-12 Cougar squad is completely dif-ferent, with only five letterwinners returning and one starter, 2011 First Team All-C-USA selection Porsche Landry. Buchanan also welcomes seven newcomers from his first recruiting class at Houston.

BUTTON CLOSING IN ON 1,000-POINT CLUB Entering the 2011-12 season, few would have thought that senior guard Roxana Button would get the opportunity to become the school’s 22nd member of the 1,000-point club, but with the loss of six seniors from a year ago and a rash of injuries, Button has been depended on to create offense and has lit up the scoreboard to the tune of 18.6 points per game through the opening 10 contests. Button entered the season with 653 points at an average of 7.0 points per game, and has already tallied 186 points for a career total of 839. Button has scored in double figures in all 10 games this season, surpassing her previous career high of four-straight double-digit performances. The Coppell, Texas, native joined the school’s 30-point club against Yale on Nov. 25, and matched her career high with 30 points at UTSA on Dec. 4. Button has averaged 21.6 points over the last seven contests.

NATIONAL POLLS (TEAMS IN BOLD ARE UH OPPONENTS)TERRAN’ DOWN THE BOARDS Freshman forward Terran Alford entered her first collegiate season with the primary goal of helping the Cougars on the glass, and the Oklahoma City, Okla., product has certainly done so by averaging a team-best 7.7 rebounds per game. Alford, who was home-schooled and had only played bas-ketball for three years before traveling to Houston, made her presence known in just her fourth collegiate game, pulling down 20 rebounds against Oral Roberts on Nov. 22. The 20 rebounds tied a school record shared by Sancho Lyttle (2005) and Toni Mooney (1983). The following contest, Alford recorded her first double-double at the collegiate level, posting 12 points and 11 boards against Yale to become the first Houston freshman to achieve the feat since Courtney Taylor on Feb. 23, 2008.

A HEAPING HELPING OF HOFHEINZ Houston’s Hofheinz Pavilion will be a second home for Cou-gar fans this season, as the women’s basketball squad will play 16 regular-season games at their home arena, which ties for second-most all-time in school history and the most since the 1977-78 season. The non-conference slate features games against teams from seven different conferences, including the Big 12, Big East and Pac-12. Eight of the 12 games will be played at Hofheinz Pavil-ion. The Cougars will play 14 total contests this season against teams that advanced to postseason play a year ago.

HOUSTON INKS SIX PROSPECTS FOR 2012-13 SEASON Head coach Todd Buchanan announed the signing of six tal-ented and nationally regarded prospects to National Letters of Intent for the 2012-13 season on Nov. 10. The six-player class is loaded with talent and athleticism, and fills needs with size in the frontcourt and serious talent at the guard position. All six players hail from Texas and five are ranked among the top 40 prospects in the Lone Star State by Premier Basketball Report. The signees include forwards Marche Amerson (6-1, Rudder HS, No. 37 ranked prospect in Texas), Taylor Gilbert (6-2, Hight-ower HS, No. 30 in Texas) and twin sister Tyler Gilbert (6-2, High-tower HS, No. 29 in Texas), and guards Jessieka Palmer (6-0, G, La Marque HS, No. 14 in Texas), Alecia Smith (5-7, PG, Cedar Hill HS, No. 15 in Texas) and Bianca Winslow (5-7, G, Bellaire HS). “I’m incredibly excited about this class,” Buchanan said. “We’ve continued to add athleticism and we hit on our needs of talent and size in the post and quick athletes with high bas-ketball IQ’s in the backcourt. LANDRY SELECTED TO PRESEASON ALL-C-USA TEAM Senior point guard Porsche Landry was one of eight players selected to the Conference USA Women’s Basketball Preseason Team. Landry earned her first-career preseason honor after a breakout junior season that saw the Houston native average 14.8 points and 4.0 assists per game while helping lead the Cougars to a perfect 16-0 record in league play and the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005. For her efforts, Landry was one of three Cougars named First Team All C-USA in 2010-11. The speedy guard flourished in head coach Todd Buchanan’s up-tempo style of play last season, averaging 4.9 points per game higher than her career average. Landry scored in double figures in 26 of 32 games last season and became the 21st member of Houston’s 1,000-point club.

YOUTH MOVEMENT The Houston women’s basketball program welcomed seven newcomers for the 2011-12 season, including six freshmen, which marks the youngest team in Conference USA. With eight total underclassmen, Houston has one of the three youngest teams in the last 11 years, and the coaches hope this squad has the same fortunes down the road that the previ-ous teams did. The 2001-02 and 2007-08 teams also had eight underclass-men, and those players eventually played on two of the most memorable squads in Houston history. The 2003-04 squad (28-4) won the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament game and the 2010-11 team (26-6) went a perfect 16-0 in C-USA play. The 2001-02 squad featured underclassmen Chandi Jones, Nicole Oliver, Shondra Bush and Kiemona Harris, while the 2007-08 team included freshmen Brittany Mason, Brittney Scott, Courtney Taylor and Jasmine Johnson.

A NEW LOOK FOR HOFHEINZ PAVILION Athletics administrators unveiled exciting new plans for a $40 million renovation of Hofheinz Pavilion in June 2010. Plans call for the home of the Houston men’s and women’s basketball teams to remain the Cougars’ home venue while up-dating the facility with the latest game experience amenities. Renovated arena will house two new practice courts, office suites for the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball pro-grams, team academic/video rooms and space for sports medi-cine and sports performance. Renovations will put fans closer to the action with 250 floor seats and 100 loge box seats. Athletics administrators are currently raising funds for the project, which includes a new $120 million football stadium on the site of current Robertson Stadium.

INCOMING CLASS RECEIVES HIGH MARKS Various recruiting services recently acknowledged the posi-tive direction of the University of Houston women’s basketball program, ranking the six-player class from November’s early signing period among the nation’s top-40 recruiting hauls. ESPN HoopGurlz rated the class as 39th nationally and second in Conference USA, just one spot behind Memphis, while placing sixth in Houston’s future league, the BIG EAST Conference. Dan Olson’s Collegiate Girls Basketball Report gave the class a top 25 ranking at No. 22, which is tops in C-USA. HOUSTON ANNOUNCES MOVE TO BIG EAST CONFERENCE The BIG EAST Conference formally announced the addition of the University of Houston, as well as UCF, SMU, Boise State and San Diego State on Dec. 7, 2011. Houston, UCF and SMU will join the BIG EAST Conference in all sports for the 2013-14 academic year. The BIG EAST Conference has emerged as one of the major powers in women’s basketball, claiming eight national titles while 11 squads have reached the championship game in the past 17 seasons. “As a basketball coach, as well as a player, there is no greater opportunity than to compete in the BIG EAST Conference, which in my opinion is the elite basketball conference in the country,” head coach Todd Buchanan said. “You look at the list of national champions that have come out of that league, coupled with the talent being produced in our state, and we now have a very deadly combination when it comes to recruiting,” Buchanan continued. “The excitement level surrounding our University family is off the charts. With the BIG EAST brand and the tremendous tradition Houston has, you will be hard pressed to find a better place to call home than U of H.”

HOUSTON’S ALL-TIME GREAT JOINS STAFF Former All-American and top-10 WNBA Draft selection Chandi Jones returned to the University of Houston to serve as video coordinator, head women’s basketball coach Todd Buchan-an announced on Sept. 16, 2011. “My short-and long-term vision has been to have former players come back to the staff and reunite as part of our basket-ball family,” Buchanan said. “For this to come full circle in such a short amount of time, it’s remarkable. The word exciting doesn’t do full justice to how I feel about having Chandi back at the Uni-versity of Houston.” Jones, who played at Houston from 2000-04, is heralded as one of the greatest basketball players ever, male or female, to attend the University of Houston. Jones will reunite with Buchanan, who served as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator during her four years with the Cougars. The Conference USA Female Athlete of the Decade is the all-time Houston and C-USA leading scorer with 2,692 points, which ranks 21st nationally, while placing 14th all-time in the NCAA with a career 23.6 points per game. Jones reached double figures in 114 consecutive games, marking every contest of her career.

In just his first season at the helm of the Houston women’s basketball team, head coach Todd Buchanan led the Cougars on one of the most memorable runs in program history.

Houston posted an overall record of 26-6, marking the second-most wins in school history, while storming through Conference USA with a perfect 16-0 mark in regular season play, becoming only the second team in league history to achieve the feat.

Buchanan also returned the Cougars back to national prominence as Houston earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and cracked the top 25 polls for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

Buchanan, who was the lone first-year head coach to take his team to the NCAA Tournament in 2011, was honored as the Conference USA Coach of the Year, marking only the second Houston floor general to garner the accolade, while also being named a WBCA National Coach of the Year finalist.

HOUSTON BAPTISTNamed as the Huskies women’s basketball head coach prior to the 2005-06 season, Buchanan led the HBU program for five seasons and compiled an 80-68 (.540) record. He led the program to a pair of trips to the NAIA National Tournament before leading the team through the transi-tion to NCAA Division I.

In his first year, Buchanan guided the Huskies to a 28-4 season that included Red River Athletic Conference regular-season and postseason tournament championships. During the NAIA National Tournament, he led the team to a Sweet 16 appearance. At the conclusion of the season, HBU was ranked sixth in the national polls.

Following up his successful first campaign, Buchanan’s 2006-07 HBU squad posted a 27-7 mark and again claimed the RRAC Tournament championship. Advancing to the NAIA National Tourna-ment for a second straight season under Buchanan, the Huskies advanced to the field’s final eight before finishing the season ranked 22nd nationally.

Houston Baptist began the unenviable transition from NAIA to NCAA Division I during Buchanan’s third year at the school and, despite these challenges, Buchanan guided the Huskies to a 14-11 record during its first year of the transition.

Among the standouts coached by Buchanan at HBU were Jere’ Adams, Sherill Hadrick, Velencia Kuykendall and Dominique Thomas, who were all named All-Americans. His teams were also

solid in the classroom as represented by Academic All-America selections in Kuykendall, Ashley Davis and Jessica Brantley.

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTONJoining the coaching staff of former UH head coach Joe Curl, Buchanan spent five seasons on the Cougar sideline and helped lead the team to the postseason four times. Additionally with Buchanan’s help, standouts Chandi Jones and Sancho Lyttle were recruited to Houston where they developed into top-10 draft picks in the WNBA.

In his first season in Houston during the 2000-01 campaign, the Cougars made the postseason for the first time in nine seasons as they won 19 games and appeared in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

The following year, Houston set a then-school record with 26 wins and was again a part of the WNIT field where it won four consecutive games before falling 54-52 against Oregon in the championship game.

During the 2003-04 season, Buchanan and the Cougars reached new heights by compiling a school-record 28-4 record and claiming both the Conference USA regular-season and postseasontournament championships. UH appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1992, and Jones became the school’s only First Team All-American. The program also earned its first NCAA Tournament win as the Cougars defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay, 62-47.

A second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament followed during the 2004-05 season, and Jones was later named C-USA Player of the Decade. Both Jones and Lyttle went on to play in the WNBA, and Lyttle was selected as an All-Star while playing for the Atlanta Dream in 2009.

EARLY COACHNG CAREERBuchanan spent two seasons (1998-2000) as an assistant coach at East Carolina, after his first head coaching job at the University of Montevallo, where he coached from 1996-98.

Prior to Montevallo, Buchanan had coaching stops at Oral Roberts (1995-96) and at his alma mater of Murray State (1992-95). He has also coached at Lyon Country High School (Eddyville, Ky.), Murray High School (Murray Ky.) and Calloway County Middle and High School (Murray, Ky.).

PERSONALBuchanan is a 1995 graduate of Murray State, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in health.

Buchanan and his wife Michelle have a 3-year old son, Colton, and live in Pearland. His father, Tom, enjoyed a successful coaching career at both Texas and Kentucky after playing college basketball at Eastern New Mexico.

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women’s basketball team rallied in the closing minutes but ultimately fell in the final second to New Mexico State by a score of 63-62 in the 2011-12 season opener Friday night, despite a career-high 37 points from senior Porsche Landry.

The Cougars (0-1) trailed by seven points with 2:01 remaining in the contest before Landry drained a fade away jumper to inch to a five-point deficit. Fellow senior Roxana Button then knocked down a jumper at the top of the key to push to within three points with 1:08 left to play.

Freshman forward Amanda Lawson intercepted an Aggie pass with 45 seconds re-maining and dished to Landry, who just missed a game-tying 3-pointer. The Aggies would miss both free-throws on the other end, however, and Landry nailed a huge jumper with her toe barely on the 3-point line to bring Houston to within one point.

After New Mexico State (1-0) split free-throws on the other end, Landry drove down and was fouled with 0.5 ticks left to play. The Houston native made the first but couldn’t get the roll on the second as the Cougar comeback fell just short.

Houston held a slim 30-29 lead at the half and took its biggest lead at 48-42 with 8:30 remaining, but the Aggies put together an 11-0 run in just over three minutes for a 60-53 advantage with 3:39 left to play.

Landry was dominant the entire night, finishing with 37 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists in 37 minutes. The Preseason Conference USA selec-tion had 25 of Houston’s first 36 points, and had streaks of 10 straight points and eight consecutive points during the first half. Landry was 17-of-28 from the field, including a trey.

Button also scored in double figures with 11 points, including six in the final eight minutes of play.

New Mexico State’s Tabytha Wampler proved too much for the Cougars down the stretch, finishing the contest with 21 points and 18 boards.

The young Houston defense forced 27 turnovers with 15 steals, while only turning the ball over 13 times.

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start against 25th-ranked Texas Tech Wednesday night, falling by a score of 88-58 at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Houston (0-2) quickly fell behind the Lady Raiders (2-0) by a score of 15-0 in just over five minutes to begin the game before finally getting on the board at the 14:45 mark. Down 22-2 with 11:37 remaining in the first half, the Cougars gutted out an 11-3 run to pull to within 12 points at 25-13.

The Cougars wouldn’t get any closer, as Texas Tech turned the tables and put together a 14-3 run over the final 5:16 of the first half.

Houston played solid defense in the opening half, limiting Tech to just 36 percent (14-of-39) shooting while forcing 12 turnovers. The Cougars picked up offensively in the second half, but the Lady Raiders shot 52 percent (16-of-31) from the field to outscore Houston 49-42 in the final 20 minutes.

Porsche Landry led Houston with 20 points, all coming in the second half, after being overwhelmed in the first 20 minutes by constant double teams.

Fellow senior Roxana Button also scored in double figures with 14 points, including a 2-of-5 effort from 3-point range.

Freshman Amanda Lawson added eight points, six rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes of play, while fellow newcomer Danielle Parks went 3-of-4 from the field for eight points and four boards in her collegiate debut.

HOUSTON - A short-handed University of Houston women’s basketball squad turned in a gutsy performance against Oral Roberts Tuesday night at Hofheinz Pavilion but ultimately fell by a score of 76-60, despite a career-high 27 points from Roxana Button and a school-record tying 20 rebounds from Terran Alford.

Houston (0-4) entered the contest against the up-tempo Golden Eagles with a depleted roster, and played most of the final 20 minutes with only seven players.

After a slow start to begin the game, Houston cut an early ORU (5-0) double-digit advantage to 22-16 with 7:34 remaining in the opening half before the Golden Eagles put together a 17-4 run en route to a 40-22 halftime lead.

ORU would lead by as many as 24 points in the second half, but the Cougars wouldn’t back down, closing the gap to 13 points down the stretch, powered by three 3-point buckets from Button.

The senior from Coppell, Texas, set career highs of 27 points, nine made field goals and five made 3-pointers in 39 minutes of work. Button was also 4-of-5 from the free-throw line and handed out three assists.

Alford, a freshman from Oklahoma City, tied the Houston rebounds record in just her fourth collegiate game with 20 boards, matching Sancho Lyttle (2005) and Toni Mooney (1983). Alford also posted five points, three assists, two blocks and two steals in 39 minutes.

Sophomore center Mae Woods also enjoyed a career night, scoring a personal-best 14 points off a 7-of-12 effort from the field in 23 minutes of action.

Amanda Lawson chipped in six points and seven boards, while fellow freshman Tahlia Pope posted team-highs of five assists and four steals to go with three points.

Led by Alford, the Cougars dominated the glass by a 50-35 margin, including 24 boards on the offensive end.

The Cougars struggled against ORU’s aggressive defense, turning the ball over 31 times, including 18 in the opening half.

HOUSTON - Roxana Button scored a career-high 30 points and Terran Alford posted a double-double but the University of Houston women’s basketball team couldn’t keep up with Yale, falling by a score of 80-62, Friday night in the David Jones Classic at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Because of a rash of injuries, Houston was forced to play with only seven players for the second-straight contest.

The Cougars stormed out of the gate, taking an early 15-5 lead while holding Yale (3-2) to only one field goal for nearly eight minutes. Houston led 19-10 at the 10:29 mark before the Bulldogs quickly put together an 8-0 run to cut the advantage to 19-18.

With the Cougars holding a slim 21-20 lead, Yale began its 3-point barrage, draining six long-range buckets in the final 6:12 of the first half to fuel a 32-9 run en route to a 42-28 halftime advantage.

Button, a senior from Coppell, Texas, set a new career high for the second-straight game, pouring in 30 points in 39 minutes off of a 9-of-25 effort from the field and an 11-of-13 performance from the free-throw line.

Alford also shined for a second-straight night, recording her first-career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alford, who tied a school record with 20 boards on Tuesday, was 4-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe in 37 minutes of action.

Michelle White also enjoyed a career night, posting a personal high of seven points off of a 3-of-7 effort from the field, including her first-career 3-point bucket. White, a senior from New Haven, Conn., also accounted for a game-high four steals to go with three boards and two assists.

Along with Alford, fellow freshman Voché Martin provided some productivity in the post, recording six points, four rebounds and two blocks. The winded Cougars struggled to defend the 3-point shot the entire contest, as Yale was 11-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs shot 40 percent (25-of-62) from the field, while Houston shot 34 percent (19-of-56).

Janna Graf led the Bulldogs with 25 points and 13 rebounds and buried five 3-pointers, while Megan Vasquez added 22 points.

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women’s basketball team wrapped up the David Jones Classic Saturday afternoon, falling to McNeese State by a score of 72-59 at Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Cougars got off on the wrong foot, falling behind 12-0 in the first 3:35 of the contest. McNeese State (5-1) built a 21-8 lead with 8:37 remaining in the opening half when Houston fought back, outscoring the Cowgirls by a 22-15 margin to cut the deficit to 36-30 at the break.

Freshman guard Mileka Loydrake opened the second half with a layup to cut the lead to four, but the Cougars wouldn’t get any closer.

Senior guard Roxana Button tallied a game-high 20 points, marking the third-straight game of at least 20 points from the Coppell, Texas, native. Button enjoyed a career night from the free-throw line, going 15-of-16.

Freshman guard Danielle Parks erupted on the offensive end, posting a career-high 16 points off a 5-of-9 effort from the field and a 3-of-5 performance from beyond the arc in 26 minutes of action.

Loydrake, a freshman from League City, Texas, provided a huge boost to the offense, returning from injury for the first time since the season opener to run the point position. Loydrake played 28 minutes, posting eight points, four rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

The Cougars shot 34 percent (15-of-44) from the field, 42 percent (5-of-12) from 3-point range and 83 percent (24-of-29) from the charity stripe.

Houston was edged in the rebounding battle by a 37-35 margin, while turning the ball over 24 times compared to 16 Cowgirl miscues.

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women’s basketball team couldn’t find a rhythm against TCU’s defense Thursday evening, falling to the Horned Frogs by a score of 80-35 at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Houston jumped out to a 6-1 lead over the first three minutes of the contest and held an 8-7 advantage at the 14:39 mark of the opening half before TCU mounted a 19-2 run over a seven-minute period en route to a 35-18 lead at the break.

The Cougars couldn’t claw back into the contest to open the final 20 minutes of play as TCU scored the first seven points and held Houston without its first field goal of the second half until the 7:58 mark.

For the seventh-straight game, senior guard Roxana Button scored in double digits with 10 points despite struggling to find an open shot the entire night.

Freshman guard Danielle Parks tallied eight points and drained two more 3-point-ers, while sophomore center Mae Woods added six points.

Voché Martin, a freshman center, led the Cougars with a career-best 11 rebounds to go with four points in 24 minutes, while Terran Alford pulled down eight boards.

For the fourth-straight game, the short-handed Cougars played with only seven student-athletes as TCU outscored Houston by a 47-10 margin from the bench.

Houston managed to shoot only 19 percent (9-of-47) from the field while the Horned Frogs shot 49 percent (32-of-66) from the field after a blazing 58-percent clip in the second half.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UTSA rode a 17-6 rally over the final 8:39 to break a tie game as the University of Houston women’s basketball team fell to the Roadrunners by a score of 70-59, Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The Cougars got off to a quick start, building a 20-12 lead at the 11:20 mark, aided by 12 early points from senior guard Roxana Button.

Houston shot out to its biggest lead of the contest at 28-19 with 7:37 remaining after freshman guard Mileka Loydrake buried back-to-back 3-pointers, but the Roadrunners would end the first half much like the second, outscoring the Cougars 15-6 to tie the game at 34 points apiece at the break.

UTSA (3-5) opened the second half on a 9-0 run before Houston finally got its first points of the second half at the 15:48 mark on a Button free-throw. Button would follow with a jumper and make two more free-throws to trim the deficit to four points with 14:53 remaining.

After falling back to an eight-point deficit, freshman guard Danielle Parks sank a bucket from downtown and Loydrake followed with a layup to tie the contest at 53-53 and cap a 10-2 run with 8:39 left to play.

The Roadrunners would score the next eight points via layups, and after Houston cut the deficit back to four points with 3:12 to play, UTSA relied on five free-throws in a span of 1:28 to put the contest out of reach.

Button, who played all 40 minutes, matched her career best in the loss with 30 points and also set career highs with 10 field goals and four steals while matching a personal best with four assists. Button scored 12 of Houston’s first 20 points, while also accounting for the Cougars’ first 12 points of the second half.

Loydrake also scored in double figures for Houston with 12 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the field, including a 2-of-2 effort from beyond the arc, and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.

Freshman forward Amanda Lawson returned to the lineup for the first time in three games and provided six first-half points to go with seven rebounds. Houston held UTSA to a 36-percent shooting performance (21-of-58), but the Roadrunners racked up 24 points at the free-throw line on 31 attempts.

The Cougars forced 22 UTSA turnovers to just 16 Houston miscues, while swiping the ball 13 times. Houston was dominated on the glass by a 52-35 margin.

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start against Louisiana Tech Wednesday night, falling to the Lady Techsters by a score of 79-53 at Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Cougars got off on the wrong foot, as senior guard Roxana Button picked up two early fouls in the opening four minutes and was forced to sit the rest of the first half.

Without its leading scorer, Houston struggled to create offense and went into the break down 36-20.

The Cougar defense was stingy early on, limiting the Lady Techsters (3-6) to just two points in the first five minutes. The score was tied 4-4 with 13:11 remaining in the opening half when Louisiana Tech found its rhythm, putting together a 19-4 run in just under four minutes.

Houston ended the half on a 6-2 run, capped off by a layup from Danielle Parks with five seconds remaining, and the Cougars continued that momentum into the second half, cutting the deficit down to 12 points with 17:03 left to play as Parks connected on her second 3-pointer of the half.

The Cougars would cut the Louisiana Tech lead down to 12 on two occasions early on in the second half, but the Lady Techsters continued to answer with big buckets to keep Houston at arms length.

Despite playing only 24 minutes, Button managed to score 12 second-half points, going a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line while burying her 100th-career 3-pointer. Button extended her double-digit scoring streak to nine games.

Parks posted 12 points in 38 minutes of action, shooting 5-of-16 from the field, including a 2-of-6 mark from 3-point range.

Fellow freshman Tahlia Pope enjoyed a career night, posting 11 points and a team-leading nine rebounds in 35 minutes. Pope took over the role of Button in the first half, scoring nine points while bringing plenty of energy to the floor.

Sophomore center Mae Woods also put together a productive performance, scoring eight points off a 4-of-6 effort from the field to go with four boards in 22 minutes.

The Cougars were plagued by free-throw shooting, converting just 14 of 28 oppor-tunities from the charity stripe, including an 8-of-18 mark in the final 20 minutes.

HOUSTON - Amanda Lawson and Roxana Button combined for 46 points to guide the University of Houston women’s basketball team to an 83-60 rout of Houston Baptist Saturday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Cougars, who picked up their first victory of the season, relied on an offensive outburst in the opening half to build a 22-point lead at the break. Houston shot a blazing 56 percent from the field and drained five of seven shots from 3-point range for 54 first-half points, surpassing the season average in the opening 20 minutes.

The contest got off to a frenetic pace, with the opening 32 points scored in just over five minutes. Houston Baptist shot out to a 12-7 lead at the 17:22 mark on 5-of-5 shooting before Lawson evened the contest at 12-12 with a 3-point play.

With Houston holding a 19-18 advantage with 12:58 remaining in the first half, Lawson took over, converting six of Houston’s seven field goals over a five-minute stretch to push the Cougars to a 32-20 lead.

Button followed with a layup and freshman forward Terran Alford knocked down a jumper to cap a 17-3 Houston run in just over six minutes for a 36-21 Cougar advantage.

With Houston still holding a 15-point lead with 5:20 left to play in the opening half, the Huskies heated up, draining back-to-back 3-pointers to close the margin to just nine points with 3:26 remaining.

HBU wouldn’t score again in the opening half, however, as the Cougars rode a 16-0 wave into the break.

Button snapped the skid quickly with a layup and followed the next time down the floor with a bucket from long range.

Lawson followed with two scores with under a minute to play before Michelle White drained her second 3-pointer of the half at the buzzer to send the Cougars to the break with a 54-32 lead.

Lawson, a freshman from Bryan, Texas, just missed a double-double with career highs of 24 points and nine rebounds. Lawson, who went 9-of-11 from the field in the opening 20 minutes, finished the contest with 11 field goals while also handing out four assists.
