I’d love to be outside, but it’s so hot.” One of the great things about living in the Bayou City is that we have close to 300 days of sunshine every year. But even the hardiest Houston sup- porter will admit, August and September might best be enjoyed inside. Hanging out housebound doesn’t mean you have to give up on your love of the outdoors, however. The solution to experiencing Houston’s glorious sunny summers without the sticky heat: the sunroom. Whether you’re looking to build a sunroom or screen room or renovate the one you have, a sunroom is the perfect way to bring the outdoors in. “Sunrooms and screen rooms are two different things,” says Ed Gosline, of Sun Fun Enclosures, a Stafford company that’s been in business since 1982. Specializing in patio, pool and porch enclosures, Gosline and his team have helped clients find all sorts of innovative ways to enjoy the sun. He explains that screen rooms are built around a frame that is designed for natural ventila- tion, provided by the screens. Sunrooms are usually permanent structures, with double-pane glass, and are often built right onto a house. How do you know whichone might be right for yourhome? Gosline says talking withyour sunroom builder is theimportant first step.

“We’ll come out and look ata homeowner’s existing propertyand foundation and try to figureout which structure will workbest within the space,” he says.“It might be that we can buildsomething onto the side of thehome, or a better option couldbe a screen room or patio in thebackyard.”

Builders say it’s important toconsider what you’re going to useyour sunroom for, as you decidewhat renovations are required orthe kind of structure you need. Ifyou’re using it as a place to gatherwith friends and kick back with aglass of wine, or a place whereyour pets can get some fresh airwithout being outside for longhours, a screened-in enclosurewith a small air conditioningunit may well do the trick. However, if you want a roomthat doubles as living space, sayan office with a view, you’re look-ing at an addition to your home.

“One of our clients is awriter,” says Ali Zare, whoseAffordable Sunrooms has beenbuilding sun structures for thelast 23 years. “And her sunroomhas great walls of double-panedglass and a waterfall outside. Sheuses it for her office.”

Zare says that a permanentstructure like the writer’s sun-room gives you the opportunityto use your sunroom throughoutthe year. The double-paned glassprovides insulation, and the cen-tral air conditioning keeps itcool. Sometimes, he says, he’llencounter situations where ahome had a sunroom with a

glass roof, and his company’sbeen called in to replace it. Hesays people want the light andthe beauty the sunroom pro-vides, but not necessarily theintense heat from a fully glassedroof. In this case, he recom-mends you consider a skylight,or simply enlarging the win-dows that serve as the walls ofthe room.

“People love their sun-rooms,” he says. “We’re noticinga lot of renovations happening, where people want to replacethe single-paned glass they havewith something with more insu-lation.”

Gosline agrees that clientsare looking for ways to enhancetheir indoor living with ele-ments of the outdoors. Henotes that often clients come inthinking they want a full sun-room, but will wind up with ascreen room instead.

“These are great structuresfor your pets to enjoy, or maybeyou or your guests are smokers,”he says. “We’re building a lot ofthese right now.”

No matter which type ofroom you’re thinking about, both Gosline and Zare agreethat construction is but oneconsideration to think over.

“Landscaping is important,”says Zare. “If you have this sun-room, you want to have some-thing beautiful to look at out-side.” He’ll work with his clientsto help them find landscapearchitects who can bring thatperfect finishing touch to aproject.

Gosline also notes thatyou’ll want to talk to a decora-tor to make sure you’ve got theright furniture and fabrics foryour space. He readily admitsthat this isn’t an area of expertisefor his company, but he knows
