UNIVERSITI MALAYA, the first University of the country, is situated on a 750-acre (309-hectare)

campus in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia.

The University of Malaya grew out of a tradition of service to the society. Its predecessors, the King

Edward VII College of Medicine established in 1905 and Raffles College in 1929, has beenestablished to meet urgent demands, one in medicine and the other in education.

When the two came together to form the University of Malaya in October 1949, this was so that

they might perform together an even greater service - to help lay the foundations of a new nation by

producing a generation of skilled and educated men.

Hence the University of Malaya was established on 8 October 1949 as a national institution to serve

the higher education needs of the Federation of Malaya and Singapore.

The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its establishment and this

resulted in the setting up of two autonomous Divisions in 1959, one located in Singapore and theother in Kuala Lumpur.

In 1960, the government of the two territories indicated their desire to change the status of the

Divisions into that of a national university. Legislation was passed in 1961 founding the University

of Malaya on 1st January 1962

The University's motto, "Ilmu Punca Kemajuan" (Knowledge is the Key to Success) reflects the

philosophy of the University in its constant endeavour to seek knowledge in all fields to produce

successful graduates and a successful nation.

Owing the shortage of medical doctors in Malaya, the Kuala Lumpur Divisional Senate set up in

May 1960 a Board of Studies to look into the possibility of establishing a second medical school in

Kuala Lumpur. The Board of Studies submitted its Report in late 1961. The Board recommended,

inter alia, that a faculty of medicine be established forthwith in Kuala Lumpur to produce 100

medical doctors annually. The existing Faculty of Medicine was established by University Statute in

September 1961. The Faculty became functional from 1st. February 1963 when Dr.T.J.Danaraj assumed duty as the First Professor of Medicine and Foundation Dean of the Faculty.

Forty (40) Pre-Medical students were admitted in May 1963 and were taught in the Faculty of

Science. The first batch of 64 students (including those promoted from the Pre-Medical

course) were admitted to Year I (Pre-Clinical Year) of medical course proper in May 1964.

On 5th. August 1968, the University Hospital (now the University of Malaya Medical Centre

or UMMC) was officially opened by His Majesty the Yang Dipertuan Agung, Duli Yang Maha

Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Dipertuan Agung Tuanku Ismail Nasarudin Shah Ibni

Alharmahum Sultan Zainal Abidin.

UMMC has since expanded rapidly from its original sole tower and ancillary blocks and now is amedical complex with the addition of a primary care medicine building (1992), an east wing

containing the expanded Clinical Diagnostic Lab and Clinical Services Complex (1997) and a

Trauma & Emergency building (2003). New buildings to house the expanded paediatrics and

obstetrics and gynaecology services are under construction. New centres of excellence and research

have been built up within the UMMC and Faculty of Medicine. These include a Clinical

Investigation Centre, Biomedical Technology Centre, analytical laboratories (SUXess) laboratories

and the most expansive laboratory animal facilities in Malaysia. Collaborative research with

overseas and local partners has brought the UMMC to the forefront of biomedical science and

technology, spearheading the advance in new knowledge and discovery. The Faculty has also

expanded in its teaching activities, training highly qualified medical and allied health personnel at

both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in many fields of specialization.
