WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH on this Pentecost Sunday when we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We especially welcome our sisters and brothers from University Temple United Methodist Church and celebrate our mutual commitment to be in ministry with the homeless and at-risk people of this community. Prayer of the Day A: Let us pray together: C: God of all creation, you have given us the Spirit of truth to let us know what your

will is for our lives. As we listen to your Spirit, guide us in the way of truth, grant us faith to follow in the way of Jesus, and give us the courage to be advocates for those who are in need of your justice and peace. As we envision the world as it could be if we all would abide in your Spirit, fill us with the hope that will save us from despair and the patience to live into the dream of a renewed creation. We pray in Jesus’ beloved name. Amen.

Choir Anthem “If Wishes Had Wings” Paul Caldwell &William Bryant, flute Sean Ivory

If wishes had wings, they'd rise.If wishes had wings, they'd fill the sky

With hopes, and dreams, And other luminous things.

They'd fly to the trees And they'd sing of peace.

Pace, mutenden, shanti, pokoj, heiwa, Sula, paz, ukuthula, amahoro, rahu,

kapayapaan, fifa, salaam, amani, alaafia, nabada, pyong whah, shalom, pacem.

When a child sings, a wish gets wings,And when the wish takes flight, the world sees

That a wish with wings is the small fleeting thingThat carries the seed of peace.

Pace, mutenden, shanti, pokoj, heiwa, Sula, paz, ukuthula, amahoro, rahu,

kapayapaan, fifa, salaam, amani, alaafia, nabada, pyong whah, shalom, pacem.

Let's give wings to our wishes,And flight to our dreams.

Fill the sky with hopeand other luminous things.

How does a wish get wings?

Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." God came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And God said, "Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another's speech." So God scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there God confused the language of all the earth; and from there God scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Psalm Hymn “O Holy Spirit, Root of Life”

Second Lesson Acts 2:1-21When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And

suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men and women shall see visions, and your old men and women shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.'”

Gospel John 14:8-17, 25-27Philip said to Jesus, “Lord, show us God and we will be satisfied.”  Jesus said to him,

“Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me?  Whoever has seen me has seen God. How can you say, ‘Show us God’?  Do you not believe that I am in God and God is in me?  The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but God who dwells in me does these works.  Believe me that I am in God and God is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.  Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do, and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to God.  I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that God may be glorified in the Son.  If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.  If you love me, you will keep my commandments.  And I will ask the One who sent me to give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.  This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because the world neither sees the Spirit nor knows the Spirit.  You know the Spirit, because the Spirit abides with you, and will be in you. . . . I have said these things to you while I am still with you.  But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom God will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have said to you.  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.”

Offering/Musical Offering “Hymn of Fire” Eugene Butler

Thou, O Christ, who came to kindle,Now ignite us with Thy fire;

While the earth resists Thy burning,With Thy passions us inspire.

Overcome our sinful calmness,Make us know our share of blame.

Baptize with Thy fiery Spirit,Crown our lives with tongues flame!

Thou who in Thy holy purposeWills that all should truly live.

Grant us grace to be Thy servants,Our tranquility forgive.

Teach us courage as we struggleIn all liberating strife.

Shame the smallness of our vision,By Thine own abundant life.

Thou who does a sword deliverRather than a placid peace.

By Thy sharpened word disturb us,From complacency release!

Save us from our satisfaction,When we personally are free,Yet are undisturbed in spirit

By another's misery!

Crown our lives with tongues of flame!

11

Offertory Prayer A: Let us pray together: C: Spirit of the Living God, you have given us all that we need to be sustained in this

life. In gratitude, we offer to you these gifts of our labor for the proclamation of the good news of your love, for the demonstration of our love for our neighbors, and for the effort to relieve the suffering of your creation. Bless this bread and fruit of the vine so that we may be united in our mission to strive for justice and peace in all the Earth. We pray in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer:P: Holy God, source of all grace and truth, endless is your mercy and eternal your reign.

Through baptism, you affirmed us as your beloved children and called us to a life of discipleship in the way of Jesus, our Christ.

In order to keep us faithful to this call and support us in our commitment to do your will, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat. This is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Jesus also took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering Jesus’ baptism, his witness to the love of God, his ministry of salvation, his crucifixion, and his resurrection, we celebrate this holy meal as evidence of his presence in our lives.

Through this holy meal, your Spirit is renewed within and among us to empower us to proclaim the good news of your realm and to speak out on behalf of those whose voices have been neglected and stifled by others in this world.

Join our prayers with those of all who have been baptized throughout the centuries and unite them with the ceaseless petitions of Jesus, our Christ, through whom all glory and honor belong to you, both now and forever.

C: Amen.

Lord’s Prayer (Pray in whatever language you choose.)Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be

done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen

THE SPECIAL OFFERING FOR MAY IS UNIVERSITY DISTRICT FOOD BANK. UDFB operates a walk-in food bank four days a week to individuals and families from across NE Seattle. Their new facility, University Commons, at 5019 Roosevelt Way NE is nearly complete! They will have 5,000 more square footage, three times for food storage, and a roof top garden. There will also be affordable apartments for 18-24 year olds and low wage workers. The rent for these apartments will be $400 - $600 per month. This will fill a great need in the University District. If you would like to contribute to UD Food Bank, you may do so by using a special offering envelope in the pew, making your check out to ULC, earmarking it for UDFB, and putting your gift in the offering plate, or bringing it to the church office. Thank you for your generous offering.

THE CARE TEAM MINISTRY AT ULC is being revived in concert with the new long-range plan. Also, as a way of ensuring that the homebound members of our congregation are contacted regularly after Pastor Ron’s departure, we would like to have at least one member of the congregation matched with one of our homebound members in order to maintain this contact. Descriptions of this ministry are available upon request. If you are interested in being a Care Team Minister, please sign up on the Worship Registration form, or talk with Pastor Ron or Katie Saltanovitz for more information.

LOIS MOE SPRING CARDS will be available for purchase in the lounge after the worship service. There are new spring cards so stop by and see them. If you have any questions, please see Joan Overland.

ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1 at 7:30 p.m., organist William Bryant will present the first recital on the new organ here at ULC. The recital will be his final recital for his doctoral degree at UW. It will be a lecture recital over the history of American organ building and Gospel influences on organ music. Selection from the collection “Gospel Preludes for organ” by William Bolcom will be performed. This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear our new organ and will be a fun, not so typical organ recital. The recital is free and open to the public.

17

THE CELEBRATION OF OUR 100TH ANNIVERSARY will commence on Sunday, June 5 with a special worship service at 9:30 a.m. followed by a good old-fashioned Hymn Sing @ 11:00 a.m. We are in need of finger foods for this event: small sandwiches, crostini, fruit kabobs, deviled eggs, lettuce wraps, fresh roll, sliced cheeses and crackers, mini quiches or other hors d’oeuvres are great! If you wish to contribute, please bring at least 24 bites. You can sign up on the Worship Registration form, or leave a message for Jan Orlando at [email protected]. Thank you!

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME! We are planning a ULC night at the Mariner’s game on June 10, against the Texas Rangers. Tickets are $19 per person, and there is a sing-a-long and postgame fireworks. We need at least 20 people to get our name up on the Jumbo-tron, so ask your family and friends to join us! If you plan to come, please sign up on the Worship Registration form. If you have any questions, please contact Jeff Berner.

SAVE THE DATES AUGUST 5-7 FOR THE ULC FAMILY CAMPING TRIP. This year we will be heading to Mossyrock Park, a little ways south of Olympia, and have reserved a large group site. Folks who want to brave the Friday traffic are welcome to head out on August 5, and the rest are welcome to join on August 6. We will have some group games, and activites, and an informal worship time on Sunday morning. Check out the next issue of The Spirit for more information, and keep your eyes out for sign ups starting in a few weeks.

FAITH ACTION NETWORK (FAN) will be holding its annual summit TODAY at 3:00 p.m. at Seattle First Baptist Church on Capitol Hill. At this summit, participants will be gathering in focus groups to plan strategies for bringing forth particular issues to our state legislators. You can register by going to www.fanwa.org.
