2. CHAPTER ACTIVITIES

2.1 School workshop

Communicate science and delight people with optical phenomena (especially those who are not related to physics yet) is one of our purpose as physics lovers. This year, in order to accomplish our target, we stablished several simple experiments which easily explains some basic light behavior; reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction. All these experiments are listed in a document. In this “Bank of experiments” (as we like to call it) it can be found significant information about every experiment; title, goal, materials, keywords, procedure, description and links or reference. The experiments are listed below:

• Holography: Shows and explains a reflection and a rainbow hologram both made by the optics researchers of our University.

• Pepper ghost effect: an iPad displays figures that are projected as virtual images in an acrylic arrangement.

• Diffraction: Composition of white light is show by diffracting it on common CDs and diffraction slits.

• Refraction: see-through container with oil, water and alcohol refracts a green laser beam.

• Colorful shadows and composition of light: four RGB LED light bulb form different colors that are seen though diffraction slits glasses.

• Optical fiber: a green laser curves its beam as it goes through a curve waterjet due to total internal reflection.

• Rayleigh dispersion: sky’s blue color is explained by illuminating smoke produced by incense sticks with white light, the same way as the sun illuminates the clouds.

Along this year we share some of this experiments in two places. The first of them was Acarpin foundation, a charming place where children and teenagers with family and economic problems eat, play and learn. At the beginning we show and explained the experiments, and then we played and danced with them in the

playground. They were really amazed, integrated and asked a lot of question about the light.

Later in the year, we did another workshop in he school La Presentación de la America. This visit was made in the school’s Science Fair. We set our experiments inside the science lab. Hundreds of students with ages from 5 to 16 did a tour around the lab. They were amazed with every experiment, we explained them and answered their questions. We also teach them how to do the experiment themselves at home or class, since almost all of them are simle and easy to do.

We also did a short tour around the school’s Science fair and saw the competitor and their projects.

We really liked to share with kids since they are open-minded, they pay attention, ask questions and they don’t hide their face of wonder. Furthermore, it is good to plant the seed of science inside the kids of a third-world country as our is. Both workshops were far from our university, so we provided members’ transportation. Moreover, since preparing and holding this workshop require several hours of work, we provide snack and lunch to the members who participate in them.

2.2 Inducement of new undergraduate students 2016-1 and 2016-2 In order to inform and receive the new undergraduate students of EAFIT University, in January and July, the EAFIT Student Chapter organized the first activity with different optics experiments (explaining basic optics phenomena such as diffraction, reflection and interference of light) to motivate them to participate in our group and to learn more about optics. We also gave candies. We obtained a good answer principally by the new students of programs related with science and engineering areas. They were interested in being part of the student chapter and motivated to research more about applications of optics in their fields of interest.

2.3 Pizza meetings In order to integrate us and discus ideas and results we organized pizza meetings three times this year.

2.4 A night full of stars

We organized a gathering with our members outside the university, in a farm located in a town 1 hour away from Medellín, with the equipment necessary to see the stars. We were accompanied by our advisor René Restrepo, who taught us about telescopes and their use. We were able to observe Saturn and its Again, we provided our members with food, lodging and transportation.

2.5 Recruitment of new members In this extraordinary meeting interested students could solve their doubts about the Chapter activity and benefits of being part of SPIE. Also, officer members went to a first semester physics engineering lecture to talk about the Chapter and the activities we were planning.

2.6 Periodical meetings We did several meetings through the year; starting from the second week of classes we organized meetings every two weeks. If we had an event, we did extraordinary meetings. At these meetings we discussed ideas, plans and future events. +

2.7 V Congreso Nacional de Ingeniería Física

This academic event took place in EAFIT and National University of Colombia. It sought to contribute to the development and growth of the scientific community working in fields related to technological design and development and to provide spaces for the connection of experience and information between these. We served as logistical support accompanying the main speakers: Joseph Giaime, Andrea Ferrari and Alessandro Curioni.

* Due to misunderstanding the Activity Grant was wired twice. We were not supposed to receive this second activity grant (corresponding to 500 USD), we were told to keep it as the 2017 Activity grant and not to request for another one the next year.

**500 USD out of the 653 USD final balance correspond to the money that is going to be used as the 2017 Activity grant. The leftover money (153 USD) was given back to EAFIT University as payback of their support.
