The UNITY Newsletter serves as the office's electronic newsletter that is circulated to over 5,000 students, faculty and staff each month. The newsletter is designed to inform the University community about programs and activities for African, Hispanic, Asian and Native American students. In addition, the newsletter includes information on scholarships, internships and other resources that are beneficial to the University's diverse student community.

One-Pot WondersDeadline April 11
In today’s economy it’s more impor-tant than ever to stretch our food dollars and enliven our cooking with deep, rich flavors. Chef Mercedes will show you how to prepare and resourcefully cook one-pot meals. Gumbo, Tuscan Turkey & Bean Potage, Pasta Fagioli, and Chicken Pot Pie are sure to please even the most discriminating eaters. The class is Tuesday, April 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $20 for students and members; $25 for non-members and includes cooking demonstra-tion, recipes, and food tasting. UM Students are invited to attend “Latin Billboard Awards” for free. If you are a UM student ages 18-25 you are invited to apply for a position as part of our pit audience or as a seatfiller. Pit Audience: Watch the entire show from the closest place to be - the stage side audience pits. Pit is standing room only. Seatfiller : Sit in the glamor-
ous VIP/Talent area. As a seat filler you will fill in the talent and VIP seats while the occupants are gone. Upon their return you will be placed in another seat. All volunteer positions require a professional attitude and appearance. Autograph seeking, picture taking or any interaction with the vip/talent guests is not permitted. If you are selected we will contact you to confirm participation and at that time will provide dress code and complete details for par-ticipation. UM student ID will be required on arrival. The Post-baccalaureate Research and Education ProgramDeadline April/May 2011
(PREP) at the University of New Mexico, under the direction of Dr. Richard Cripps, is currently recruiting nationwide and accepting applications for the 2011-2012 cohort. PREP is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded program designed to enhance the ability of underrepresented minority post-baccalaureate students in the biomedical sciences to gain entry to, and succeed in, nationally-recognized Ph.D. programs. We anticipate to begin the 2011-2012 program in June 2011. We are seeking recent (or May 2011) college graduates to fill 9 PREP trainee/scholar openings. The scholars are required to perform research for one full year with their faculty mentor. In addition to lab research, scholars are expected to:• prepare and take the GRE• seek and apply to Biomedical graduate programs • attend professional meetings • enroll in a Research Ethics course • present research • attend weekly meetings • attend seminars • and other recommended activities. The program is an intensive one-year program. Although it is time consuming, PREP provides scholars with great number of tools, skills, and knowledge to succeed in graduate school. NSHMBA’s 2011 Scholarship Program The National Society of Hispanic MBAs, which exists “to foster Hispanic leadership through graduate man-agement education and professional development,” has established a scholarship program to assist qualified His-panics to pursue MBAs. Scholarships are offered each year for full- and part-time study at an accredited (AACSB) institution of the student’s choice.Applicants to the NSHMBA Scholarship Program must:• be a United States Citizen or legal permanent resident• be of Hispanic heritage• have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) OR have a minimum 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) in combination with two years of full-time work experience.• have a NSHMBA membership - Member ID required. (Applicants who are not currently NSHMBA members may join now. Click on this NSHMBA Membership link.)• be enrolled or planning to enroll in a Master’s Degree program in Management/Business no later than fall 2011 at a college in the United States or Puerto Rico accredited by AACSB. Click here to view the complete list of AACSB Accredited Schools. Awards will range from $2,500 - $10,000. The top five (5) full-time applicants who demonstrate financial need will receive an award for $10,000. The awards include up to a $250 travel and accommodations reimburse-ments for attending the NSHMBA Annual Conference & Career Expo during the award year. Awards are renewable for up to one year or until a Master’s Degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Re-newal is contingent upon the recipient meeting the following requirements:• Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) in current degree program.• Maintain active NSHMBA membership status and are expected to be NSHMBA ambassadors. Recipients must show involvement with the organization through the NSHMBA local Chapter by utilizing the following opportuni-ties: • Drive the mission of NSHMBA and develop the pipeline on their campus • Serve as an officer or committee in their local NSHMBA chapter • Drive NSHMBA sponsorship and membership efforts • Drive participation to NSHMBA Annual Conference & Career Expo • Attendance to NSHMBA Annual Conference & Career Expo • Other Hispanic orientated community/business school events may be substituted if a NSHMBA chapter is not located within 50 miles

Eligibility Requirements: • Be of African-American/Black, Asian/Pacific Islander or Hispanic decent. • Be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student in a degree-seeking program at a U.S. accredited insti tution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands,or Guam. • Be a resident in the Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Central New Jersey; Denver, CO; Houston, TX; Miami, FL; Los Angeles, CA; San Antonio, TX; or San Francisco, CA metropolitan areas. • Have a minimum of 3.0 Grade Point Average on a 4.0 scale. • Be entering their Sophomore, Junior, Senior or 5th year Senior year at a U.S. accredited college or university and plan to attend FULL-TIME. • Be a US citizen OR legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551. • Apply for federal financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). • Demonstrate leadership and extra curricular activities.
