R.A.D. and S.A.F.E. Women’s Self-Defense Classes scheduled at Medical CampusVisit www.miami.edu/selfdefense for more information

The Medical Campus Security Department, in partnership with the Coral Gables Campus Police Department, has scheduled national women’s self-defense classes on the Medical Campus for December, 2010. Additional information, class schedules, and on-line registration is available through www.miami.edu/selfdefense S.A.F.E. (Self-Defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange) is a 2.5 hour introduction to self-defense that provides women with risk awareness, risk reduction and personal safety information, in addition to a few basic physical defense techniques. While S.A.F.E. is not an in-depth self-defense program, it encompasses information on prevention, options, strategies and basic physical defense technique instruc-tion. S.A.F.E. is an excellent introduction to the Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) program. Date: Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 from 6:00-8:30pm Fees: $10 for students/ faculty/ staff and $15 for Jackson employees and the public. The comprehensive course begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance before progressing into detailed hands-on defense training which includes a final simulation exercise. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program, but rather a physi-cal defense program designed specifically for women to utilize in the most common types of physical attack situations. Dates: (Class 1 of 3) Tuesday, December 7th, from 5:30-9:30pm (Class 2 of 3) Thursday, December 9th, from 5:30-9:30pm (Class 3 of 3) Tuesday, December 14th, from 5:30-9:30pm Note: This is a three session program where content builds upon itself. Youth Exchange for Young Professionals in Germany Application Deadline: December 1, 2010

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), a yearlong fellowship to study and intern in Germany, is currently accepting ap-plications from your students. CBYX is open to applicants in all career fields without any prior German language knowledge, and is funded by the US and German governments through a grant provided by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, under the authority of the Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961, as amended. More information can be found at www.cbyx.info.The CBYX program covers the costs of and annually provides 75 participants with:• 2 months intensive German language training in Cologne, Bremen, or Radolfzell• Semester of study at a German University or University of Applied Sci-ences• 5-month internship with a German company in the participant’s career field• Homestays with German host families, in shared apartments, and student dorms• Transatlantic airfare, health insurance, and monthly living expense stipends• Various seminars in the US and Germany• Local in-country support throughout the programCBYX for Young Professionals is open to students in all fields of study, though preference is given to students in vocational, technical, engineering, agricul-tural, business, and scientific fields. Applicants should have clear career goals and some relevant work experience in their career field, which may include summer, part-time, or internship work. Prior German language knowledge is not required, though it is strongly preferred. Participants must be between the ages of 18-24, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and be US citizens or permanent residents.

Humanity in Action: Fellowship Program

Deadline: January 10, 2011Content:Humanity in Action (HIA) Fellowship Program brings together university stu-dents from the United States and Europe for a rigorous, interdisciplinary inquiry into human rights, diversity, and minority issues for five weeks from a compara-tive, international perspective. Fellows are selected on the basis of their demonstrated commitments to minority rights, evidence of leadership potential, and outstanding academic achievement. HIA pays housing during its programs, along with a modest food stipend.Eligibility Requirements:-Enrolled sophomore, junior, or recent graduate at the time of application.-All majors and academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.-The GPA is just one criterion HIA evalu-ates during the selection process. No spe-cific GPA threshold is required.-Applicants may apply for one or both of the fellowship programs (American and/or European) but can participate only in one.

The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest 2011 – Deadline: December 6, 2010

The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to challenge college students to analyze the urgent ethical issues confronting them in today’s complex world. Students are encouraged to write thought-provoking personal essays that raise questions, single out issues and are rational arguments for ethical action. 2011’s Suggested Topics: · Articulate with clarity an ethical issue that you have encountered and analyze what it has taught you about ethics and yourself. · Reflect on the relationship between religion and ethics in today’s world, making sure to draw on your own life as a guide. · What does your own experience tell you about the relationship between politics and ethics and, in particular, what could be done to make politics more ethical? Full-time undergraduate juniors and seniors at accredited four-year colleges and universities in the United States are wel-come to enter the Essay Contest.

All submissions to the essay contest are judged anonymously. A distinguished committee reviews the essays and a jury, headed by Elie Wiesel, chooses the winners. Please note that no manuscripts will be returned and essays may not be sub-mitted elsewhere until the awards have been announced. Recipients of the SMART scholarship receive a cash award paid at $21,000 to $41,000 per year (depending on prior educational experience), full tuition and related education expenses, health insurance, a book allowance, summer internship opportunities, and post-graduation career opportunities. Each year, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace holds a rigorous nationalcompetition to select approximately 8-10 graduating seniors to serve as research assistants. Theyare matched with senior associates – academics, former government officials, lawyers andjournalists from around the world – to work on a variety of international affairs issues. JuniorFellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, participate in meetings with high levelofficials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars,journalists and government officials.

Junior Fellows spend one year (beginning August 1st) at the Carnegie Endowment inWashington, DC. Boren Scholarship Opportunities for U.S. Undergraduate Students to study in world regions critical to U.S. Interests

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught lan-guages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.The on-campus deadline for Boren Scholarships is December 20, 2010 for study abroad taking place in the 2011-2012 academic year. Paid Intern Exchange in Berlin for Journalism & Communication StudentsApplication Deadline: January 31, 2010

Freie Universität Berlin and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are pleased to announce the fourth year of an intensive scholarship-supported summer seminar/internship program in Berlin for American journalism and communi-cations students. The program is targeted primarily at currently enrolled undergraduate students, but a limited number of graduating Seniors, recent graduates and Master’s students may be accepted as well.

For the first six weeks of the program, participants will take part in a seminar series to expand their academic understand-ing of the politics, society and culture of Germany, and the country’s current social conditions and media scene. During the second week, students will go on excursions within Germany together with journalism students from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union. The final five weeks consist of an intensive internship with a German newspaper, maga-zine, radio station or PR firm in or near Berlin.

Applicants must have at least “advanced intermediate” German skills to take part in the program, as the seminars and internships take place in the German language. The 15 applicants who are finally selected for the program will be awarded a monthly stipend of 650 Euros for the duration of their stay in Germany. DAAD will also provide health and accident insur-ance. Intercontinental travel is at the participants’ expense. The application deadline is January 31, 2011. Resource Development Intern

The Resource Development Intern will contribute to the six-person Resource Development Team. NCLR’s Resource Development component consists of extensive corporate and individual donor programs that contrib-ute over $1 million directly to NCLR’s operating budget. NCLR is also looking to grow its general operating support from

foundations. This is an excellent opportunity for an interested candidate to learn about NCLR and contribute to strategically targeting and reaching new constituencies. The intern will be integral to all team meetings and will be included in other component interactions. The ideal candidate will have an interest in fundraising and nonprofits. Skills learned from this internship can

be applied to all types of customer/constituency outreach. The intern’s primary duties will include conducting research on existing and prospective individual, foundation, and cor-

porate donors. The intern will also help enhance Resource Development’s data management system (Microsoft CRM), by ensuring the quality of its data and developing systems to keep track of vital donor histories. In addition, the intern will be generating various reports and conducting strategic analysis of Resource Development data. The intern will help execute in-house direct mail campaigns, coordinate high-level meetings with our corporate donors, draft official communications,

and other tasks as assigned. The National Council of La Raza (NCLR)—the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States—works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated

community-based organizations (CBOs), NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform prospect research using online and hard copy resources

Maintain a database of Resource Development online and hard copy resources, including list servers

Enter data and ensure accuracy of database entries

Compose various types of communication pieces for internal and external distribution

Coordinate in-house mailings to prospects and existing corporate, foundation and/or individual donors

Contribute to the development of database rules and quality assurance policies

Manage and execute seasonal projects

Perform other related duties as assigned
