REGIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR THE
WESTERN PACIFIC AREA
The Programme Committee has referred the establishment of the Regional Office
for the Westerm Pacific to the Committee on Administration, Finance and Legal Matters
In order that budgetary implications may be considered, the following facts
are brought to the attention of the Third World Health Assembly.
The delegates representing a majority of the members in the Western Pacific
Area,"'" namely Cambodia, Korea, Laos, Philippines and Viet-Nam, have presented
letters to the President of the Third World Health Assembly requesting the
establishment of a regional organization in that area (see Annex).
The First World Health Assembly instructed the Executive Board as follows:
" ( l ) to establish regional organizations in the areas indicated in the
second report of the Committee on Headquarters and Regional Organization as
soon as the consent of a'majority of Members situated within such an area is
obtained; where the consent of a majority of the Members has not yet been
obtained, a regional organization in the respective area should be
established as soon as the necessary consent becomes available ; " 2 .
It had been anticipated that this Regional Office would be established as
from 1 July 1951. The estimated cost of this and providing for á supervisory
office for the first six months of 1951, as indicated on page 185 of Off, Rec. 23,
is estimated at $117.653. This amount is included in the budget ceiling of
$7,300,000 in document A3/48. Should the Regional Office be established prior
to 1 July 1951 additional budgetary provision will be needed.

the Western Pacific for the year 1950, we propose that this Regional Office should
. be set up in.1951. At the same time, it is the belief of my Government that a
