The delegates representing a majority of the members in the Western Pacific Area,"'" namely Cambodia, Korea, Laos, Philippines and Viet-Nam, have presented letters to the President of the Third World Health Assembly requesting the establishment of a regional organization in that area (see Annex). The First World Health Assembly instructed the Executive Board as follows: "(l) to establish regional organizations in the areas indicated in the second report of the Committee on Headquarters and Regional Organization as soon as the consent of a'majority of Members situated within such an area is obtained; where the consent of a majority of the Members has not yet been obtained, a regional organization in the respective area should be established as soon as the necessary consent becomes available ; " 2 . It had been anticipated that this Regional Office would be established as from 1 July 1951. The estimated cost of this and providing for á supervisory office for the first six months of 1951, as indicated on page 185 of Off, Rec. 23, is estimated at $117.653. This amount is included in the budget ceiling of $7,300,000 in document A3/48. Should the Regional Office be established prior to 1 July 1951 additional budgetary provision will be needed. " W f . REGIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR THE

WESTERN PACIFIC AREA

The Programme Committee has referred the establishment of the Regional Office

for the Westerm Pacific to the Committee on Administration, Finance and Legal Matters

In order that budgetary implications may be considered, the following facts

are brought to the attention of the Third World Health Assembly.

The delegates representing a majority of the members in the Western Pacific

Area,"'" namely Cambodia, Korea, Laos, Philippines and Viet-Nam, have presented

Dear Madam President,

.-.On behalf of the Government of, the Republic of Korea, I have the honour to

convey to you the wish of my Government that a Regional Office should be set up in

the Western Pacifie area.

Realizing that no budgetary provision has been made 'for.the'-Regional Office in

the Western Pacific for the year 1950, we propose that this Regional Office should

. be set up in.1951. At the same time, it is the belief of my Government that a

supervisory offi'ce iir the Western Pacific area in the. interim period is necessary

i'ri'order to carry 'out the functions as outlined in the resolution submitted by the

Director-General and amended by my délégation, and to prepare the way for the for-

mal establishment of the' Regional ..Office for the Western Pacific area.

: Trusting that you will bring the proposal of my Government to . the attention
