Rabbi Stefan TiwyRabbi’s Reveries

Shalom everybody,

Finally – spring is here! Aft er long and dreary months with little daylight and stray snow fall up until a month ago, nature seems to fi nally have awoken from its hibernation. And along with the arrival of spring time, we got to celebrate the holidays of Purim and Passover.

Th anks to the way the calendar worked out this year, we had a full week of Purim celebrations: From our very well-attended fun Purim Carnival of our Religious School over the actual Purim Eve Service with festive Megillah reading to our adult-only “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Purim Shpiel – the UJC has been abuzz with life and celebration.

Same goes for Passover: A few weeks back, I got to learn with interested adults from our congregation about the Four Children of the Haggadah and the lessons we can pull from them for our own lives and families. My adult-ed session was followed by our Model Passover Seder, which gained completely new momentum this year with active, movement-oriented participation of our religious school kids envisioned by Cantor Kessler. Pesach being

a home-based holiday, this program enabled us to prepare and share ideas for meaningful Seders at everybody's homes.

In our tradition, Passover is the holiday of freedom – not only physical freedom, but also mental and emotional. Getting confronted in the news by some of the terrible actions people are capable of, such as the terrible massacres in the Muslim community in New Zealand in March and the Christian community in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, we are once more shockingly reminded of the ongoing need for our world to be healed.

In times of crisis, seeing people stand up in support can be a powerful force for good as well as a starting point for the healing process. I feel honored that I had the chance to join the Muslim community in Newtown at the Al-Hedaya Islamic Center last month along with Cantor Kessler for a Solidarity Jumu'ah Friday prayer service. Th e community was very welcoming and appreciative of the attendance of neighbors and clergy representatives of diff erent faith groups showing their support.

Looking ahead, we have several more events coming up on an almost weekly basis: On Friday, May 3, we will celebrate our annual Brotherhood Shabbat, and the following Sunday, May 5, we will already embark on our Field Trip to the Bronx Zoo! More than 80 people have signed up for this fi eld trip, and I am excited that we get to explore this enormous zoo together.

Th ere are also several special services as well: On Friday, May 25, we will experiment with a “Downstairs Shabbat” in the auditorium to allow members with diffi culty walking the stairs to attend. Also, Shavuot is coming up on Saturday eve, June 8 at 6 pm, when we will hold our festival evening service (incl. Yizkor) and ceremony of Confi rmation for our 10th-graders. Our confi rmation students will participate in the leading of the service and also share their experiences from confi rmation class that evening.

Th ere is one more special event before summer break, and that will be on Friday, June 14 at 7 pm: Th e UJC will have its fi rst “Shabbat at the Park” service at Bennett Park in Bethel together with our neighbors at Temple Sholom in New Milford. Keep your eyes peeled for more information, including guidelines for a shared potluck dinner that evening.

Looking forward to celebrating these special occasions together, with all best wishes,

Rabbi Tiwy

Israel: It’s Complicated

I love Israel. I love the idea, the place, and the fact of her existence. I pray for peace in Israel and between Israel and her neighbors, a peace that’s more than just an absence of war and terrorism. I pray for her success as an example of democracy.

My relationship with Israel is more complicated. I intensely dislike the current government’s attitudes towards American and Israeli liberal Jews (specifi cally Reform Jews) and its extreme dependence on religious and political ultra-right-wing politicians who say horrifyingly racist and bigoted things about liberal Jews and Arabs (in fact anyone who’s not of their mindset).

Th ere’s now generations of Jews for whom Israel is a vague abstract, nothing more than a point on a map. Th ey have no spiritual, emotional, or physical connection. Th ere’s no understanding of or appreciation for history or purpose. Israel is just another country with a bad rep and even worse PR.

We older Jews have unintentionally created this mess with our insisting that Israel was, is, and – worst of all –will always be a helpless country. It’s absolutely true that countries and terrorist groups that wish her both ill and eradicated surround Israel. And it’s also true that anti-Zionism and its underpinning of anti-Semitism is growing throughout

the world. But Israel is far from helpless. People, Jews included, who insist that any criticism of Israel (like my disdain for the current government) is a form of self-hatred encourage

the younger generations to back away from the attachment that many of us older Jews felt back in the day.

So what do we do about it? Well, one way is to keep Israel in the forefront of Jewish education. Th at’s exactly what my UJC curricula do. I use music and current events to impress on our kids that Israeli kids are just like them. Th ey like similar music, television shows, games, and toys. Th ey talk in the language that our kids try to learn to pray in. Th ey worry about the environment, their safety, and civil rights, just like American kids.

Our kids can tell you all about Netta, Israel at Eurovision, “Push the Button,” pink rhinoceroses, and “Toy.” Th ey know about the funky hairstyles Israelis wore in the late 70s, and the transgender phenom that won major awards for her fantastic musical performances. Th ey will tell you about my colleagues' search for the best sufganiyot in Israel, the time snow brought Jerusalem traffi c to a screeching halt, and what happens in Israel on Israel’s Memorial (Yom HaZikaron) and Holocaust Remembrance (Yom HaShoah) Days. Th ey also know that there are lots of other religions and ethnicities in Israel; and the older kids are aware that Israelis live a perilous balancing act between safety/security and ensuring the rights of everyone who lives there.

I don’t expect that our kids will have the same attachment to Israel that I have. But they will be able to tell you that Israel is a very special place. So maybe one day they’ll want to go there and pick carobs off trees, plant trees in forests, and experience sufganiyot right out of a Tel Aviv bakery.

From the PresidentLisi Green Marcus

Dear Friends,

I recently attended a Celebration of Life for a dear family friend, a remarkable man who lived into his late 90s. His family escaped Nazi Germany and followed a somewhat circuitous route to the USA. Once here, he and his family reaped the benefi ts of freedom and the opportunities this country aff ords.

Despite leaving his home and being ostracized because of his religious identity, he never showed any bitterness and established himself as a businessman who would rarely suff er a missed opportunity.

I learned much from this gentleman, and gentle he was. He was smart, ambitious and successful yet there was a fun, youthful side to him. He could dine with diplomats and CEOs one day while focusing his attention on the local

cheese merchant, looking for Easter eggs with children or going to Home Goods for an impromptu shopping trip the next; enjoying all these experiences equally!

Th ere are many lessons to be learned here. He inspired all to try harder, do more, reach higher, face challenges, be creative, be philanthropic, take risks, take someone out to dinner, do random acts of kindness, learn a new language, try a new activity, make a new friend, try a new food, travel to a new country. VOLUNTEER! Whatever your joy is share it with others!

He epitomized the concept of noblesse oblige; the duty of those who have been given every opportunity to then do for others – g’milut chasadim – acts of loving kindness. As I look around our congregation, I see a chosen people – those who benefi t from many of the best things life has to off er: art, travel, education, family and community. Th is is not to say that life goes on without challenges. It is, however, all about perspective. Th e lesson of my friend’s life makes me realize how goodness can be cherished and how it inspires me to the point that I can encourage you to a life fi lled with g’milut chasadim.

B’Shalom,

Lisi

I realize that we are well past the date when people usually make resolutions for the coming year, but has anyone thought of making Spring-time resolutions? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn more about some specifi c topic or just general learning about an era in history. Well, I’m pleased to tell you that our own UJC Feinson Library has the resources to help you with that. I know that I’ve mentioned in the past that the Library has books on every conceivable Jewish topic. So, why not check out the Library and be pleasantly surprised with the vast selection of non-fi ction books or our selection of fi ction books, or our selection of DVDs, or our selection of magazines or selection of books for both young, pre-teen and also teenage children.

An interesting part of Jewish Life is that of the Hasidim. We have books on that too! Th ere’s “Hasidic Tales of the Holocaust” compiled by Yaff a Eliasch. Th rough interviews and oral histories, it shows how the Hasidim used faith to survive the Holocaust. Th en there’s “Hasidim and the Modern Man” by Martin Buber – one of the great philosophers of the 20th century. And there’s also “Unorthodox – Scandalous Rejection of my Hasidic Roots” by Deborah Feldman. Th e story of growing up – and eventually leaving – the oppressive Satmar sect in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

So, check out our Library - I’m sure you will fi nd something (or somethings) that connect with any of your interests.

We also have many hundreds and hundreds of books on every conceivable topic. But some of these books have not been used in quite a while. We would like to fi nd a new “home” for these books, and would appreciate any suggestion as to where.

And, as always, I would like to hear from you regarding ANY suggestion concerning the Library – maybe about a book or DVD, or the Library usage. Please contact me at either at 203-746-3963 at [email protected].

Happy Reading!!!

Ritual Moments

One of least understood and observed of the three pilgrimage holidays (the other two being Passover and Sukkot) is Shavout, which this year falls on Saturday, June 8 and is observed by Reform Jewry for one day. As Religious School is normally fi nished for the year, many students do not learn too much about this holiday. It is observed 7 weeks (or 49 days) aft er the 2nd Passover Seder (if you want to join with many of us in the counting of the Omer – just contact the UJC offi ce to be put on the mailing list for counting the Omer). Th e holiday has two diff erent signifi cances – a grain harvest conclusion and the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai.

It is customary to eat dairy products on Shavout. Th ere are several diff erent explanations for this, but the one that seems to be the most common is that when the Israelites who left Egypt were in the desert, but before they received the Torah, they were not required to keep kosher. Since all the pots and pans and dishes had to be made kosher, they choose to eat dairy foods. Th e common dairy foods that are usually eaten on Shavout are cheesecake, cheese blintzes, etc.

Th e Book of Ruth is usually read at this time. Th ere are several reasons for this. King David was a direct descendant of

Ruth and was believed to have both been born and died on Shavout, and Ruth (a former non-Jew) stated her wish to follow the Torah and convert, so it is very fi tting to read her story on Shavout, the holiday of the giving of the Torah.

Since Shavout is so closely associated with both Torah study and pledging of loyalty to Judaism, it is appropriate to hold Confi rmation services for our religious school students at that time.

Join us on Saturday, June 8 for a four-fold celebration: Shavout services, the reading of the Book of Ruth, Confi rmation and Yizkor – all starting at 6:00 pm.
