To help students identify characteristics of past and present species that have helped them survive throughout and reproduce to keep their species forth going.

Targeted State Frameworks/Content Standards/Benchmarks 112.6. Science, Grade 4

4.8 Science concepts. The student knows that adaptations may increase the survival of members of a species. The student is expected to:

A)  identify characteristics that allow members within a species to survive and reproduce;

(B)  compare adaptive characteristics of various species; and

(C)  identify the kinds of species that lived in the past and compare them to existing species.

(2)  Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to:

(A)  integrate a variety of ideas about self, life events, family, and community in original artworks;

(B)  design original artworks; and

(C)  invent ways to produce artworks and to explore photographic imagery, using a variety of art media and materials

ProceduresThe Students will see a power point and be given handouts and notes over adaptation and different theories of extinctions.After the lesson plan and comprehension of the essential question and unit questionsStudents will break into groups of five and create an assigned environment from the lesson using various art materials. The environment will need to be as imaginable as possibleOnce the environment is created, I will swap the environments created with another table and each one of the four students will create two animals out of the art supplies with characteristics or adaptations that will help them survive or disappear in their new environmentApproximate Time Needed (Example: 45 minutes, 4 hours, 1 year, etc.)
