west. The country's name comes from one of the earliest of these , the philistines, who lived
there from about 3000 B C, Although its first inhabitants were the Canaanites. Today some
of the nation's cities are famous in world culture. Greatest of all is Jerusalem . Holy City to
three great religions. Close to the sea the country has a pleasant climate, and every season is
attractive in its own way. Perhaps, though, the best for a visit is spring. Palestine is not large,
but it has always been a very important meeting-point and centre of cultures. Palestine has a
great variety of geography. This varies from the green farmland in the north to the desert in
the south, and from the high hills around Jerusalem to the deep Jordan Valley. There, at
411m below sea level, is the lowest dry-land point on Earth. There, too, is the Dead Sea, the

The outside door was in it, so Helen desperately needed another way out. There was only the bedroom window, and outside that there was just a narrow ledge, 10 centimeters wide and 30 meters up. “I was really frightened, but I had no choice”, Helen said later. Smoke was already coming into the bedroom. With her eyes shut tight, she climbed out and lowered her feet slowly to the ledge. “and then I screamed for help”, said Helen. Luckily her neighbors heard her and quickly called the fire service. The fire engine came, but the ladder was too short. In 1942 the Israelis attacked "Al Birwa" the village where Mahmoud Darwish was born and in 1948, his family was obliged to leave to Lebanon and at the age of six he became a refugee. A year later, the family returned, but their village had disappeared; instead, a new Jewish settlement stood there. The family was expelled to another village. After he graduated from high school in 1959, he moved to Haifa and worked for a newspaper. He published his first book of poetry a year later and in the following ten years , he became the editor of his newspaper. He continued writing, too, and in 1969, he received the Lotus Prize from the Union of Afro Asian writers. He also used to travel without a travel permit to give public reading for his poetry which made him feel very pleased. Over the years, he has published more than 30 books, mostly about Palestine.
