Unit 34: TV Studio Productions LO4.1 Evaluation Technical Quality Overall I wasn’t overly pleased with the outcome of the piece. From the technical side of this piece we all had experience working with cameras, lighting, set and sound- although this piece was outside of the TV studio we still brought our collective ideas together. During the day of film I was pleased with the teamwork we had in solving problems such as cameras and lenses; then also setting up of the mics, stands and cables. Our pre preparation to setting up of equipment and finding the right angles of the cameras and shots we could get worked well for such a small amount of space that we had for both the camera crew and performer on the day. For the sound, we had to take the equipment outside of the TV studio; this caused problems as we found difficulty working the device. For the production I was producer, camera operator and editor. I was pleased with my angle of the performer and how it looked. I was worried about the audio during editing it had not worked as well as we had hoped; but we made sure to cut the shots perfectly at the right points and to the beat of the music but also we cut out the shaky camera section. Aesthetic Quality For the set design I was very plead with the use of colours that Abbazappa Records had, I thought this fit in perfectly with the aesthetic of the performer a he himself is quite quirky. For the performer the use of colours were a lot better than the interview. For the interview we found it difficult to set up the chairs so we could fit in the cameras, presenter and performer. We quickly used our initiative and set it up as perfectly as we could. The colours of the set behind the speakers in the interview worked well in contrast to the previous set to the performance. I thought the set done well to give a comfortable vintage vibe that we were looking to achieve.

LO4.1 Evaluation

Technical Quality

Overall I wasn’t overly pleased with the outcome of the piece.

Aesthetic Quality

For the set design I was very plead with the use of colours that Abbazappa Records had, I thought this fit in perfectly with the aesthetic of the performer a he himself is quite quirky. The use of lighting was of warm tones, as we had used the lighting that was in the shop. There were multiple hanging bulbs throughout the tiny shop that I thought was perfect for the vintage look; but also during the performance, there was a use of vibrant colours from the lava lamps and warm toned colours of lamps set around the room. Even though we didn’t have too much experience in the lighting it worked well to give the show a warm effect, that then could be added to or drop to colder tones during editing.

Realisation of Aims

I felt we were able to reach most of our aims by getting the performer, the record shop and making everything come together. I was happy how our team worked well together to fix problems of camera set up and sound. However our realisation of the audio had not worked as well as planned but we worked together to try and make the audio as perfect as we could during editing. During the interview I felt as if the presenter could have done a better job of learning the questions so that we didn't have awkward pauses; we tried our best to cut out

these sections so that it was ok in the end up. Each member of the team ha faults but we all worked around them to try and get the production to almost perfection that we wanted.

Suitability for Purpose

Overall we have done our best with the outcome of the production. Although we could have done better we believe that it turned out better than what we thought on the day of filming. The idea and format of the show would be perfect for a 10 minute slot on a music show if we had of done a better job. I think this sort of show would be perfect for an online show or a music production; as our ideas of set designs before the show would have made a great show and if everyone was better prepared.

Own Contribution

Throughout the production I felt that I have done a good job as producer and getting everything prepared for the day. As camera operator I believe I could have improved on my shots maybe some movement of the camera around the performer. For communication of the crew, I was pleased with how I communicated well together with my team to get the job done. Although there might have been difficulties with transport and timing we done well to get everything together. For the editing of this piece I was one of the editors, I believe I done well in cutting down the performance so that there were no shaky angles on the camera and that everything was perfect. I also learned that communication is a big factor when it comes to making a production and that every member was to play a role. As I was a team member I was also responsible for the sound failing, we could have improved on it and I should have done a better job of getting to know the sound equipment with everyone else. If we were to do this production again I believe we would be a stronger team and I would have worked harder to make it more professional than what it was.

LO4.2

Technical Quality

There is a lot that I would change technically. The main problem I believe we had is the sound, we could have worked better to get the audio perfect so that the guitar wouldn’t have a tinny sound or that there would be no hum and fuzz in the background. I believe that the camera set up could have been more interesting as they were too static and stuck in position, whereas we could have had a lot more artistic angles and close ups and even movement around the performer. This would have made the performance and production more interesting to look at, but also would have made the flow of the piece seamless. For the editing side of the production we could have worked longer to make the piece less grainy looking for the interview section and could have worked better to change the quality of the audio and colours.

Aesthetic Quality

For the aesthetic quality I was quite pleased with the outcome, the main thing I would have changed would be the layout of the set in the interview section and the use of lighting. For the interview we could have had the performer and host sit at a better angle so that boxes weren’t in the shot and a railing of clothes. For the lighting of the production I believe we could have done a better job of setting up lighting so that the piece looked more professional and TV style like. For the set up and positioning of the performer we could have had a more open space so that the cameras could play around with movement and depth of field to make the production look more interesting and quirky. But overall I was pleased with the use of colours that were set up in the Record shop that had a vintage feel to the style of the production.
