Unit 2Structures of Living Things
Lesson 1How do organisms
transport materials?
Cells as Building Blocks• A cell is the basic unit of structure and function in
living things.• Every living thing is made up of cells.• Jobs that our cells do:
– Break down food– Carry oxygen to other cells– Carry away waste materials
Cell Structures & Functions• Plant Cell • Animal Cell
• Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplast, and vacuole. Animal cells do not.• Animal cells have a vesicle. Plant cells do not.Cell rap http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu21ShnKhHk&feature=related (1:23)
Four types of tissue• Epithelial
• Muscle
• Connective
• Nervous
Tissues• Most of your body is made of muscle
tissue.• Your skeleton is made of connective
tissue.• Another type of connective tissue is
blood.
• Nervous tissue makes muscles contract.
Tissues work together in an Organ.
• Stomach: breaks down food.
• Heart: pumps blood to the body.
• Lungs: take in oxygen.
All of these work together to form an
organ system.
Circulatory System• Made of: Heart, blood vessels, &
blood.
• The circulatory system transports nutrients and waste throughout the body.
