Othello Act II: “Iago the Confidante”

After the drunken brawl and Cassio’s demotion, Cassio is overwhelmed with grief and despair. Iago uses this opportunity to further ensnare Cassio in his plans. The audience should recognize Iago’s tactic; indeed, it was the same approach he took earlier with Roderigo. In the graph below, chronicle the similarities used in Iago’s approach to influence Roderigo and now, Cassio.

Roderigo Cassio

How or why are they each

vulnerable?

How does Iago exploit (take

advantage) of their weakness?

What does Iago intend to gain from

each man?

How does Iago appear to each

character?

Othello Act III: “Who Is Wronged?”

First: Reflect on who has been wronged the most by the end of Act II. Is it Roderigo, Othello, Cassio or Desdemona? Write several sentences expressing your opinion.

Next: Make a prediction indicating whom you believe stands to be hurt the most as the play continues.

Activity A: Using the first 90 lines of Act III, scene iii, describe how each character unknowingly takes part in beginning the next phase of Iago’s plan.

Activity B: With the stage now set for Iago, he needs only to convince Othello of Desdemona’s infidelity. Indeed, by the end of Act III, scene iii Othello is convinced of her treachery. Yet, how did Iago do it? In the following graphic, identify Iago’s shrewd comments made about Desdemona and Cassio. Then describe Othello’s reaction to each. If done correctly there should be a series of subtle suggestions made by Iago which leads Othello to bloody intentions.
