Welcome to the official start of our year, when we receive our Study Group Guides and know the Opening Fall Luncheon is on the horizon.

I want to share with you some of the fantastic research going on at Brandeis.

The latest research shows we must forgive ourselves for events beyond our control. We need to

be able to move on with our lives following a disagree-ment or major misunderstanding. Sometimes we cannot fix what we feel is wrong with the world, work, people, and our own lives. Researchers know that psychologi-cal stress can trigger biological responses similar to the effects of illness or injury, including inflammation. If inflammation is not controlled, it may lead to heart disease, cancer, or Alzheimer’s disease. This research was conducted by Nicolas Rohleder, who is a research psychologist.

As we approach this Jewish New Year, let us leave old experiences behind us and begin a fresh page with our family, friends, and associates. Let us be mindful of the feelings of others and their ideas, successes, and fail-ures. Let us learn not to be negative or critical of others’ thoughts. Let us join together as one and work together to make this year special.

Our speaker for the Opening Luncheon will be John Maley, private eye. He is a high-energy person who does much to help the youth of today adjust to society when they have been cast aside and put in correctional facili-ties because of their wrongful acts. He has investigated many homicides, but none as gruesome as those told in his book. Books will be on sale at the luncheon or are available ahead of time at book stores and on line. I hope most of you will attend this special opening event.

We will also be honored by the current Western Region President, Pauline Green. She will speak to us on the latest happenings at Brandeis.

L’Shanah Tovah. Happy New Year. New beginnings for everyone,

Lynn Cramer, President

John Maley, Local Author, at Opening Fall LuncheonWe are honored to have Tucson author John Maley as our guest speaker for the exciting lun-

cheon this year at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel at Reid Park on Monday, October 20, 11:00 a.m. Please refer to the front page of this bulletin for the reservation form.

John Maley has been a soldier, a peace officer, a corrections officer, a probation officer, and has worked as a private investigator in Colorado, Hawaii, and Arizona. John has four college degrees, a wife, and two children. His oldest son is a physician and his young-est son is a first lieutenant in the United States Army. John’s wife, Teresa, is a lieutenant

colonel in the Army Reserve and a nurse manager at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System. John has taught history and criminal justice at the high school and college level. He currently lives in Tucson.

He will be discussing his novel based on a case here, A Little Murder in Tucson. This new crime novel frames the events upon two homicides author John Maley investigated in Tucson. In the book, Jake Hunter has a case of a lifetime. Two beautiful women are missing and the severed arms of one are found. The investigation takes many twists and turns, leading to a startling conclusion. This fictionalized version of two real cases in Tucson is an exciting story from an author who has lived related events.

This “mysterious” start to our 2014–2015 Brandeis year is not to be missed. There is a free new and prospective member get-together prior to luncheon from 10 to 11 a.m. Make sure to stay for the pay luncheon.

Fonda and Fey and Longmire … Oh, My!Sheila Rothenberg, who rounds up the authors for our Book and Author Events, notes that some of those who

appeared here recently are in the news as they continue to entertain America. She went to the El Con cinema in July and saw coming attractions for “This Is Where I Leave You,” a major, star-

studded movie—including Jane Fonda & Tina Fey—of Jonathan Tropper’s novel, which opened nationwide in September.

If you recall, Tropper was our guest the same day as that engaging  cowboy and creator of Sheriff Walt Longmire, Craig Johnson. The television series based on his book series just completed its third year on the A&E network.

Remember author and artist Chris Gall, the Tucson resident and creator of “Dinotrux”? DreamWorks, which purchased the rights to animate the book, has turned it into an original series for kids, and Netflix has bought the streaming rights to air it.

So, if anyone who wants to know what Tucson Chapter is doing, you can certainly tell them we are way ahead of the curve in bringing the best and most interesting authors to Book and Author Events. We have top authors at our events. Our track record speaks for itself, don’t you think?

Look for exciting news on 2015 Book & Author Events over the next few months.

This year, Carol and Burt Cunin will be leading a new Study Group discussing the 1950s through the 1970s, progress-ing through the decades. The course will finish next year through 2010.

A group member will review a decade every other month, with a light potluck buffet to follow, featuring foods that were popular then. For those dressing in the decade’s attire, there will be an extra dessert portion!

Sign up now to join the fun and excitement of memories past.

Study Group: Nostalgia Through the Decades

The Play’s the ThingWarren Bodow has returned to teach-

ing for this year’s Study Group season with the viewing and discussion of five classic plays that were made into classic movies. Two such plays/films are “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “The Sun-shine Boys.”

Warren, now a playwright in his mature years, has a particular interest in the challenges and opportunities of telling a story in two different media. Perhaps he wants to write screen plays also!

Warren’s classes have filled quickly in the past, so sign up as soon as possible to experience his wonderful course.

Books & Bagels and MoreOur Books and Bagels Study

Group has been one of those classes that fills easily, so this year we are offering a second group, which will run itself.

This second morning group, scheduled for the second Sun-

day of the month, will choose its own books for discus-sion.

This course is your chance to join a book club that does not meet on a work day. Be sure to reserve your space now in one of these two great book groups. The first people selected are in the first group, while the overflow will be in the second group.

Guided Bridge ChangesThis year, the Guide Bridge Study

Group will take anyone who has learned bridge, not just intermedi-ate players.

Leader Sondra Wikman will give general and spe-cific help on the first and third Mondays of the month, while the group has the option to practice on the other Mondays.

Sondra’s skills include developing new learning tools, including “The Mindfulness of Bridge.”

Segal FellowshipEli Segal ’64 is remembered as one of the country’s most

philanthropic and innovative individuals. The late Brandeis alumnus had a thriving career in politics and law, was one of the “Fathers of AmeriCorps,” and, according to former President Bill Clinton, was “someone who could take any vision and turn it into reality.”

A year after Segal’s death in 2006, his colleagues es-tablished the Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program at Brandeis to inspire and support new generations of lead-ers who share his passion for improving society. The Segal Fellowship matches students with summer internships with numerous partners centered in improving society, a mentor to help them develop their skills in a professional setting, access to Segal’s network of associates, and a stipend. The Fellowship is a lifelong commitment.

This year, through an intensive and highly selective pro-cess, six students were chosen as Segal Fellows.

Beyond the Ice BucketThe ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is simple: Donate $100 to

an ALS charity or dump a bucket of ice water on your head and donate $10. Millions of people around the world have taken the challenge, including Justin Timberlake, Bill Gates and Olympian Tim Morehouse ’00.

But finding a cure for ALS is not as easy as pouring a bucket of ice over your head. Amyotrophic lateral sclero-sis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disease marked by the rapid, progres-sive death of motor neurons that control muscle move-ments. It currently afflicts about 30,000 Americans, and scientists are still trying to understand the underlying cause.

At Brandeis University, professors Suzanne Paradis and Avi Rodal are unraveling the molecular mechanics of ALS. By understanding how growth and survival factors are be-ing diverted from their normal itinerary in diseased neu-rons, they hope they can develop new therapies to return these signals to the appropriate location.
