Unit 2Chapter 3Communities & Biomes
Limiting factors
Any biotic or abiotic factor that restricts the numbers & distribution of organisms
Succession: changes over time
Primary succession Takes place on land where there
are no living organisms
Succession: changes over time Secondary succession
The sequence of changes that take place after an existing community is disrupted in some way
Ex: forest fires, volcanoes, hurricanes, etc
Biomes
Major geographic communities with similar climates and vegetation
Aquatic biomes
Photic zone = the portion that is shallow enough for light to penetrate
Ex: intertidal zones, estuaries, coral reefs
Aquatic biomes
Aphotic zones = deeper waters that never receives sunlight
Ex: the abyss
