Came for gold.
Brought disease, which
killed up to 90% of the
people in North America. Found a mountain of
silver in Bolivia and
discovered that sugar
cane would grow in the
Caribbean.
They became rich.
Controlled the southwest
of what would be the US.

CAME FOR MANY REASONS.
Young people came tostart a new family andhave a better life. Theywere settlers.
Pilgrims and Puritanscame to practice theirreligion.
English planters came to
grow rich growingtobacco.
The French wanted totrade, but not stay.

THE ENGLISH AND INDIANS OFTEN DID
NOT GET ALONG.
At first, Native Americans and
the British cooperated.
As more English came toAmerica and more English
colonists moved west, the
English began to take Indians
land. The British were not always
tolerant of dark-skinned people,
especially non-Christians.

THE ENGLISH ALSO BEGAN TO
PUSH OUT THE OTHER EUROPEAN
COLONIES. Before 1700 Around 1750
The Dutch took over the small Swedish colony (near
Philadelphia) in 1650s, but then the English defeated the
Dutch in New York in the 1670s. The English colonies
controlled the East coast by 1750.

THE ENGLISH BROUGHT SLAVES TO
NORTH AMERICA.
In the southern colonies,
English plantation owners
used slaves to grow cash
crops such as tobacco.
Most slaves came to theAmericas to work on sugar
plantations in Brazil and the
Caribbean islands.
In America, slavery became
more important after 1800when cotton was grown in
the South to supply cloth
factories back in En gland.

British.
The war was part of a
world-wide conflict
between France and
England for land.
The English won in North
