Why Our Uniform is Important
At St Mary’s College it is important for students to wear the correct uniform; to wear it well and with pride. Wearing it correctly reflects the spirit and image of the College Community.
Formal Uniform • Depending on the weather, students may wear either the full winter or full summer uniform
throughout the year.
• The blazer must be worn as part of the uniform to and from school, on formal occasions
and in the Cathedral and assemblies.
• Students may wear the College jacket over the blazer and PE uniform.
• Skirts and summer dresses must be to the knee.
• Brown school shoes are worn with the formal uniform.
• The polar fleece jacket is not part of the formal uniform, but can be worn at school or with
the PE uniform.
Health & Physical Education Uniform
• The PE uniform may be worn to school on PE days, or if the student has a Sports Pass, or
when advised by the College.
• If a student does not have the full PE uniform, then the full formal uniform must be worn
to and from school instead.
• Track pants must be worn to and from school by ALL Year 3-12 students when the PE
uniform is worn.
• SMC leggings may only be worn at training or PE lessons or games.
• The skort must not be worn to and from school.
• The blue bucket SMC hat must be worn when outside in the sun at lunchtime or during
outside activities in Terms 1 and 4.
Expectations
• Hair should be off the face and tied back if it grows below the collar.
• Hair accessories include blue, brown or dark green ribbons and hairbands.
• No fashion hairclips are permitted.
• Scarves must be bottle green, sky blue or chocolate brown
• Gloves are brown and green.
• Hair accessories, scarves and gloves should be purchased from the Uniform Shop.
• Students may wear a simple watch and one pair of small plain metallic stud (max 5mm) or
small plain metallic sleeper earrings worn parallel in the ear lobes. (no pearls or stones)
• Make-up and nail polish are not to be worn.
• False nails are not to be worn.
School Bags
School bags are regarded as part of the school uniform. For Health & Safety reasons, it is recommended that they should be carried in the following manner: backpacks should be held by both straps on the back, and carrybags should be held at the student’s side (not on shoulder). Sports items must be carried in the regulation sports bag. Only the regulation school or sports bag are permitted. No graffiti is permitted on bags.
Sporting Team Uniforms In the Junior School Shorts and polo top should be worn for all team sports.
In the Senior School, all sports teams must wear the St Mary’s College trackpants, polo top, rugby top and logo socks to events, college or polar fleece jackets are optional. All sporting teams are required to wear St Mary’s College sport skirt, skorts or shorts with St Mary’s College polo top for competitions. Each sport has a distinctive uniform for matches which is registered with SATIS and cannot be changed. The penalty for a student not being in correct uniform is disqualification from the match or event. Leggings may only be worn during trainings and PE lessons. They are not to be worn around the College or to and from the college.
Kinder to Year 2 All children attending Kinder to Year 2 wear full sports uniform only from 2018.
Drama Compulsory for all Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 Drama students.
‘Blacks’ consisting of long sleeve black T-shirt and long leg black stretch pants (not available at Uniform Shop).
Keeping Warm The Polar Fleece Jacket is being phased out for Years 3-12 and replaced by a soft shell jacket in 2018. The soft shell jacket or polar fleece is not to be worn with the blazer. To keep warm, students can wear a spencer which is not to be visible under the blouse or polo top. Students can also wear a cardigan (which will be introduced for Years 3-12 in 2018) and the jumper.
The College Jacket is a compulsory part of the Kinder – Year 2 uniform. All other year levels may wear the Jacket over their PE or Formal Uniform if weather requires additional wind/rain protection.
