An Extraordinary Sixth Edition

The Figures of Success

• Since its launch in 2003, European Neighbours’ Day has constantly flourished, and is today celebrated beyond European borders.

• This year, for the sixth edition of European Neighbours’ day, 8 million people got together in 29 countries; 20 of these were European Union countries.

EU : Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Spain, France, Hungary, Irland, Italy, Latvia, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Roumania, United Kingdomi, Slovaquia, Sweden Outside the UE : Albania, Canada, Croatia, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, Ukraine, Taiwan, Turquie

• Almost a thousand city halls, local authorities and organizations worldwide have become official partners of the event; 800 of these are European.

An Ever-Expanding Partner Network

Through European Neighbours’ Day, the European Federation of Local Solidarity privileges national delegacy ensuring event coordination and promotion throughout the various participating countries. The countries’ cultural diversity is highlighted through the great dynamics involved in sharing this commonly-held concept. This year four new national partnerships have been signed, boosting to 13 the number of national coordinators.

The Keys of Success

A Highly Practical "Toolkit"

Showcase of our success, our website www.european-neighbours-day.eu has been totally revamped. Our new international site hosts 28 fully-dedicated national satellite sites, all displayed in their respective local languages. Enhanced with new “country” pages and an ever-growing number of members, the site proposes instant upload and display of articles, photos and videos from all over the world. .

To make event setup easier, all participating city halls and organizations are provided with a customized CD communication kit, translated and adapted for the respective countries. This kit, designed around promotional posters, flyers, and leaflets, is regularly enhanced with new items such as: methodology guides, reverse scheduling over a period of several months enabling maximum event rallying. This is completed with a good practices guide detailing multiple examples of innovating, original initiatives, impressions of each country’s folklore, tradition and culture.

The video clip, updated every year with numerous new images, perfectly portrays the atmosphere of European Neighbours’ Day and its multi-cultural diversity.

European Neighbours’ Day now publishes a Newsletter, a source of news and information and permanent link to the Federation: sign up via our website and be the first to know what’s going on.

The media is paramount in promoting the event: press releases, articles are written by the European coordination based in Paris. Each country is free to use them and adapt them as required for local press release.

To give thanks, to show its appreciation, the European Federation of Local Solidarity has created a European diploma "Ville Conviviale- Ville Solidaire” (Friendly and Cohesive City) to honour local representatives and inhabitants for heir involvement in the organization and the success of European Neighbours’ Day.

Official European Recognition

The 2008 edition took place under the high patronage of the European Commission, represented by Mr. Vladimir Špidla, Commissioner in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities.

European Neighbours’ Day is also under the high patronage of the Committee of the Regions and is supported by Eurocities

and CECODHAS (The European liaison committee for social housing). The 2008 edition has been acknowledged as a good practice of Intercultural Dialogue for "Living Together in Diversity ".

In 2008 the EFLS has benefited from the support of the European Union: European Neighbours’ Day 2008 is co-financed by the European Union through the Programme “Europe for Citizens” 2007-2013.

The Commission is highly involved with operations

- through official requesting of moral, logistical and financial support for European Neighbours’ Day from all national representatives

- through extensive media-related support by regularly relaying news and information to European press networks, which provides us with extensive media coverage, and, through systematic on-line notifications of the event, backed up by redirectional links.

Accompanying us during specific highlights of the event: national press conferences, the official European Neighbours’ Day launch in Liverpool, European Capital of Culture.

And finally, by celebrating European Neighbours’ Day “in-house” at their headquarters, the members of the European Commission spontaneously and warm-heartedly raised a toast to their colleagues and office neighbours

Objectives for 2009

Guarantee independent financing for the European organization in charge of the event

- European Neighbours’ Day was initiated in 2003 by the French association

Immeubles en Fête, and is steered by the EFLS: the European Federation of Local Solidarity.

- Since its creation, 6 years ago, the Federation has been entirely and solely financed

by the French association Immeubles en Fête. The association, unable to continue full financial support, has reduced its 2008 participation, thus casting doubt on the federation itself. The priority is therefore to diversify EFLS’ financial sources, through private sponsors and through public bodies and European institutions.

Reinforce cooperation with European institutions

- It is essential to highlight institutional patronage of European Neighbours’ Day –

European Commission, Committee of the Regions, European Parliament – through all our communication tools.

- Especially within the framework of June 2009 parliament elections, by reinforcing

the European aspect of European Neighbours’ Day, notably through visual media and communication tools.

Become increasingly visible within all European networks

- 20% increase in the number of city, local authority, and association partnerships (900 in 2008 -> 1150 in 2009) - 15 national partnerships set up (versus 13 in 2008)

- Develop a strategy for increasing awareness of International Neighbours’ Day: Asian Neighbours’ Day (Japan, Taiwan), Neighbour Day in Australia, National Neighborhood Day in the USA.

Consolidate EFLS’ offer

- Create a “twinning” proposal for European cities: enable European Neighbours’ Day to become a privileged means of enhancing city twinning. We have identified a certain number of uniting factors, such as European Neighbours’ Day, capable of strengthening already-existing ties between inhabitants of twinned cities. - Launch the “Voisins Solidaires” (Neighbours together) programme. This programme, launched in France in 2008 in several pilot cities, aims to motivate and multiply good neighbourhood practices, year in, year out, by favouring friendships.
