Underfloor HeatingUnderfloor heating has now become the preferred form of space heating within the UK due to its increased efficiency and even thermal comfort. Underfloor heating systems work by distributing lower temperature warm water through a network of pipe work within the floor construction and beneath the finished floor level, this heat is carefully monitored and controlled by an advanced range of modern room thermostats to keep a constant ambient temperature throughout the property & individually for each zone.

Underfloor heating is now a complete solution for both existing and new construction homes, with a selection of systems to suit all scenarios; suspended floors, floating floors, low profile over floor and screed applications.

Advantages:

• Lower fuel costs compared to traditional radiators

• Ideal partner for renewable energy heating – i.e. Heat pumps

• Improved energy efficiency

• No risk of burning due to low surface temperatures

• Silent operation

• Low maintenance

• Long life (50 years for underfloor heating pipe work)

• Increased flexibility for occupants due to all of the walls being free from radiators.

• Less air movement due to lower convection currents, reducing the airborne spread of pollen and bacteria, thus, improving air quality.

An Introduction to Underfloor Heating

Floor construction Underfloor heating can be installed within a variety of different floor constructions. The different floor constructions comprise of solid screed floors, suspended floors and floating floors. The insulation below the underfloor heating should be of an adequate thickness and resistance to restrict any downward heat loss.

Screed SystemsScreed systems rely on thermal conductivity to transfer heat from the pipes within the screed to the finished floor level. The makeup of a screed system consists of slab or oversite base, edge insulation around the perimeter of all walls to allow for expansion and contraction and to prevent heat conduction from the floor to the walls. A suitable insulation is then laid on top of the oversite and the underfloor heating pipes are fixed to the insulation with screed encasing the pipes.

Suspended FloorSuspended underfloor heating systems regularly use heat diffusion plates to dissipate the heat evenly. Insulation is tightly fixed between the joists and then the aluminium heat spreader plates are then laid on top of the joists and securely pinned. The underfloor heating pipe work is then fixed in to the plates according to the floor plan layout provided.

Floating FloorsFloating floor systems are laid directly on top of the existing floor eradicating the need to disturb the current floor structure. Floating floors comprise of either high density pre-grooved insulation with an added aluminium spreader plate to increase heat output or a low-profile high density pre-grooved gypsum panel which is supplied with unique plastic end supports which allow for multiple flow and return pipes and for the return bends.

Floor coveringsMost floor coverings are suitable for use with underfloor heating systems, below is a general overview of each floor covering.

Ceramic and stoneMost ceramic and stone based floor coverings offer the least resistance to heat transfer which makes these coverings the ideal partner for underfloor heating. When fitting these products a flexible adhesive must be used to allow for expansion and contraction to restrict the possibility of the finished floor from cracking or coming loose.

Vinyl floorVinyl flooring offers a low heat resistance and whilst most vinyl and plastic flooring is suitable for use with underfloor heating, we advise checking with the flooring manufacturer to ensure the chosen vinyl is suitable.

Wooden floorsTimber floors work well with underfloor heating. You will find that most underfloor heating should not exceed 27°C when wood flooring is laid. Care must be taken to ensure that the timber moisture content does not exceed 10% when the floor is laid, to prevent movement in the floor as the timber dries out.

CarpetsCarpet and underlay provides the highest heat resistance. You should make sure the underlay is suitable for the use with underfloor heating and has a low TOG value, the combined carpet and underlay should not exceed 2.5 TOG.

Controls Controls are an essential part of heating packs, be it for radiator or underfloor heating systems. Radiators are generally controlled by a single time clock with thermostatic radiator valves controlling each room’s individual room temperature, whereas underfloor heating usually has a single control thermostat for each room which carefully monitors and controls the temperature for that individual room.

Manifold Offering from 2 – 12 ports the manifolds are made of stainless steel and are provided with isolation valves and drain-off/air vent valves.

Thermostatic Mixing Valve and Circulating PumpA 3-port thermostatic mixing valve used to blend the water down to the desired temperature required for the underfloor heating system. Generally the TMV will be set around 45°C. An A rated circulating pump will be a part of the mixer set.

Actuators Actuators control whether a circuit is open or closed and offer more control over your underfloor heating system.

An Introduction to Underfloor Heating

Wiring CentreMulti-zone wiring centres allow simplified wiring installation within underfloor heating systems. Giving the ability to wire multiple room thermostats and actuators from the manifold. Wiring centres should also include boiler, pump and two-port valve connections. In addition to this our wiring centres also offer hot water & heating circuit connections.

Room ThermostatsRoom thermostats should be used in every room, this is due to a number of factors. Each room could have a different room temperature (see table), each room will have a different heat loss, which if there is only one thermostat on each floor this will not accommodate for this. We offer 230v, 12v and wireless controls.

Rapid Clip Plate Installation Guide

1. Start by ensuring the floor is level and free from dirt prior to laying the insulation panels.

2. Apply the blue edge insulation around the perimeter of the room using the self adhesive backing. Make sure the clear gaiter is facing away from the wall.

3. Lay the insulation panels across the whole floor, pushing them up against the edge insulation. Ensure that the clear polythene flap is laid over the top of the insulation panels. (Please note insulation for screed systems is NOT supplied by SOLFEX and must comply with current building regulations)

4. Begin by laying the first plate in one corner with the rounded castellated edges away from the walls.

5. Fix the second mat with the edge castellation slotting onto the rounded castellation along the shortest side. Continue this process staggering the plates down the longest side until the whole floor is covered. Where necessary it is advisable to cut the plates using a hand saw, jig saw or suitable snips.

6. Ensure that the clear gaiter attached to the edge insulation is lifted over the top of the castellation mats and trapped in place using the pipe (as in point 7). If the pipe run is not located along the wall, please ensure that the clear gaiter is taped down in place to prevent the screed from leaking through under the insulation.

7. Now begin to lay the pipe. It is advisable to use a pipe de-coiler (UFH-ACC-PDC) for installations; this will reduce the need for an additional worker to carry the coil. Please ensure to utilise the floor plan pipe layout design provided.

8. Once all the pipes are laid begin filling and pressurizing the system to check for leaks prior to screeding.

WARM-BOARD Installation Guide

1. Start by ensuring the floor is level and free from dirt. Removing all loose debris.

2. Mark all areas that will be underfloor heating free i.e. under kitchen cabinets, toilets, baths and showers.

3. Place 18mm/15mm plywood/MDF boards in the unheated areas to bring the final floor level.

4. Start by laying the first two WARM-BOARD end supports, fixing the supports to the floor with suitable screws using the screw holes provided.

5. Lay the first board, butting the edge up to the end support.

6. Ensure all edges are free from dirt and dust. Apply glue to the edge of the second WARM-BOARD and butt up against the first WARM-BOARD. Use a small cut of pipe to align the WARM-BOARDS.

7. Upon reaching the end of the first run, fix two more end supports at the end of the run. This will leave a final cut of WARM-BOARD to finish the first run. Use a hand saw or jigsaw to cut the boards. Cutting the WARM-BOARD should be done in a well ventilated area with suitable breathing apparatus.

8. When starting the second run stagger the WARM-BOARDS in a brick pattern. Continue in this fashion until the whole area is covered.

The WARM-BOARD End Support is a revolutionary, multifunctional underfloor heating pipe and floor support system. The End Support with its multiple snapping points enables a more flexible approach to underfloor heating installation, giving the installer the benefit of installing larger floor areas. With the integral pipe securing system, it allows a trouble free quick installation of the pipe work, ensuring the underfloor pipe work remains fixed in position. The word support has a multiple meaning; the product offers a support to the floor covering above around the perimeter of the room, without the requirement of a biscuit screed; it supports the pipe work once pressed into place

Suitability

A full ‘OVER FLOOR’ solution, for use on both suspended and concrete floors.

Boundary ConditionsThe pipe fixing is placed on hard surface and was constrained in all 6 degrees of freedom. Once it is secured in place a 1500N load was uniformly distributed over the surface of the WARM-BOARD End Support which is equivalent to 150Kg.

Stress Test of WARM-BOARD End SupportA stress analysis was carried out to investigate the suitability of the design for the purpose intended. A 1500N load was applied uniformly on the surface of the underfloor heating pipe fixing. Upon final inspection the end support suffered no cracking or deformation.
