3.1 Design the installation

Step 1: Measure the heated areaDetermine the heated area of the floor where there are no permanent fixtures or furniture such as showers, toilets, vanities, or cabinets. Measure the heated area of the floor.

For example, in Figure 3, the area of the bathroom is 8.75 m2. When you subtract the area of the vanity, shower and toilet, the total heated area is only 6.45 m2.

Step 2: Determine the power supply voltageMake sure the supply voltage is 230 V.

Step 3: Plan the designDetermine the optimum floor heating mat layout for your heated area to ensure coverage. Select a position for the thermostat in the wall above the heated area where it can be reached by the 3.0m cold lead on the mat, and the 3.0m floor temperature sensor. The thermostat can be installed at any height, provided it is within reach of the necessary cables. Please refer to Figure 4.

Important! The predetermined cable spacing must be maintained to ensure proper floor heating. Do not change the heating cable spacing when you lay out the cable or the floor may have cold spots.

Figure 3: Heated area

3.2 Confirm your product selection

Confirm that your chosen underfloor heating mat is no larger than the heated area of your room. Following the example from Figure 3, if the heated area is 6.45m2, you should select the 6.0m2 underfloor heating mat.

It is vitally important to choose the correct size heating mat as the heating cable cannot be cut or shortened to fit the heated area.

100% of the heating cable and cold tail connection must be covered in a full bed of flexible tile adhesive or self levelling compound.

All cold tails must be taken back to a connection point or thermostatic controller.

Quality Electric Underfloor Heating

Important: Tools and materials requiredYou will require the following items to install and test the floor heating system:

• Scissors

• Utility knife

• Wire strippers

• Tape measure

• Screwdriver

• Multimeter

You will also need the appropriate tools and materials to install your chosen floor finish (if you are also the flooring installer). These will likely include products such as self levelling compound, thin set tile adhesive, insulation board or backer board and a notched trowel.

Step 1: Plan layoutSketch a floor plan of the room including all permanent fixtures and furnishings such as toilets, bathtubs, appliances, cabinets, etc. Indicate all dimensions required to determine the available floor area and the position of the thermostat.

Step 2: Transfer layout to the floorDraw an outline of the room layout on the floor including a foot print of all permanent furnishings identified in your plan that are not yet installed.

Unroll the first few feet of the underfloor heating mat. The starting point of the cable must be placed within 3.0m from the thermostat. The cold tail and floor sensor cable can both be extended using suitable extension wire.

Leave a 50mm perimeter around the edge of the room.

Important!Mark the position of the cold tail connection point between the power lead and the heating cable. This connection must be fully concealed in flexible tile adhesive or self levelling compound.

When using a floor temperature sensing thermostat, mark the sensor position between 2 heating cables, about 25cm away from the wall (within the heated area), as close as possible to the thermostat.

Step 3: Install the floor sensorIf using a floor temperature sensing thermostat, install the sensor now, either in conduit tube, or directly to the subfloor. It is recommended that the sensor be installed in conduit tube. This will allow the sensor to be easily replaced in the unlikely event of failure.

The sensor and conduit should be installed between the thermostat wall box and the sensor position.

The conduit tube must be partially countersunk into the subfloor. Cut a channel, wide and deep enough for the conduit, in the floor and wall up to the thermostat for the sensor conduit. The conduit has to go from the thermostat connection box to a minimum of 25cm away from the wall, towards the middle of the floor.

Step 4: Plan the designDetermine the optimum floor heating mat layout for your heated area to ensure even coverage. Select a thermostat position in the wall above the heated area where it can be reached by the 3.0m cold lead on the mat, and the 3.0m floor temperature sensor. Please refer to figure 4 on p6.

Important! The floor temperature sensor must be installed centrally between 2 runs of heating cable, away from other temperature influences such as hot water pipes and large glazed elevations.

Use the cap provided (or duct tape) to close the end of the conduit so that adhesive can’t penetrate the conduit.

The predetermined cable spacing must be maintained to ensure even floor heating. Do not change the heating cable spacing when you lay out the cable or the floor may have cold spots.

Thermogroup UK recommend that the installation is documented with photos at regular intervals to note the location of the cold tail connections and the sensor.

Use duct tape to hold the sensor conduit into the groove to prevent it from floating up when the adhesive or leveller is poured.

If the sensor is installed directly in the adhesive bed, use duct tape to secure it to the subfloor.

Step 4: Prepare the subfloor surfaceClean and vacuum the floor thoroughly. Take extra care to remove any dust and debris from the floor that may damage the heating cable.

Ensure that the subfloor is secure and stable. Carefully fill in all cracks to prevent any potential damage to the new tiles resulting from shifts in the subfloor.

Insulation boards (optional)On a timber substrate, use cement coated insulation boards and fix to the timber substrate using suitable screws and washers.

Take care to identify any pipes or electric cable before fixing screws into the timber sub floor. Coated boards should be fixed at 300mm centres around the edge of the boards to ensure stability.

On a concrete substrate you should use an uncoated insulation board, adhered to the substrate with a full bed of suitable, flexible tile adhesive.

Step 5: Resistance test AUse a digital ohm meter to measure the resistance of the mat and compare it to the readings in the relevant table on p7. Record the measured resistance on the customer handover form on p16 of this guide.

Documenting the resistance at each stage of installation is required for warranty registration. Also, measure the resistance between the live, neutral and earth wire - the meter should read infinity on this test. Please refer to p12 for instructions on how to measure and record the resistance test results.

Step 6: Begin laying the underfloor heating matComfortzone underfloor heating mats feature an adhesive on the under side which will prevent the mat from moving during installation.

Start by placing the mat such that the connection point and the temperature sensor are in their intended positions and bring the power cable to the thermostat or connection box.

Begin unrolling the mat evenly across the heated floor area that you marked out previously in Step 2. The adhesive on the mat will allow the mat to be moved several times before it loses its adhesion, subject to substrate conditions.

When you reach the wall, cut the mesh, turn the mat, and begin rolling in the desired direction.

Ensure that the underfloor heating mat is in full contact with the subfloor at all times.

Avoid walking on the heating mat. If this is not possible, use shoes with soft soles and keep traffic to a minimum.

When approaching oddly shaped obstacles (toilets, cabinets etc.), carefully cut the mesh into thinner strips that can be manipulated to fit the awkward area. In some cases pieces of the mesh will be cut away entirely. Use hot melt glue or a thin strip of tape to secure the loose cable to the floor.

It is highly recommended to take photographs of the installed underfloor heating mat before installing the final floor finish.

Step 7: Resistance test BPlease refer to Step 5.

Step 8: Install the floor coveringENSURE THAT THE SENSOR CONDUIT HAS BEEN PROPERLY INSTALLED BEFORE PROCEEDING (see Step 3).

If you are installing tiles, proceed with the installation of the tiles by covering the heating cables with a layer of flexible tile adhesive as directed by the tile manufacturer.

To install the tiles, apply a layer of compatible, flexible adhesive using the ridged side of your trowel. Tile and grout the floor using best industry practices, in accordance with the instructions provided by the tile manufacturer.

Ensure that the tile adhesive is compatible with electric underfloor heating and make sure you cover the entire height of the heating cable as the tiles are installed.

Do not use “dot n dab” tiling techniques. The tiles must be adhered with a full bed of adhesive to ensure there are no air gaps that could cause the heating cable to overheat.

If installing a wood, engineered or laminate floor covering, it is recommended that you contact the flooring manufacturer for advice and special requirements such as maximum temperatures and compatible adhesives.

A minimum layer of 10mm of self levelling compound over the heating cable is recommended before installing wood, engineered, laminate, vinyl or carpet floor coverings.

Ensure that all moisture in any self levelling cement has been fully eliminated in accordance with the drying times recommended by the manufacturer (consult the manufacturer for exact drying time).

Quality Electric Underfloor Heating

WARNING: The following points must be strictly adhered to. Failure to do so could cause overheating and result in serious fire hazard or electrical shock.

Precautions to be taken to avoid damage during installation, such as dropping sharp objects or stepping on the heating unit, or careless pouring of concrete.

The floor temperature sensor must be installed away from other temperature influences such as hot water pipes and large glazed elevations.

Only for indoor installation. Do not install in walls or ceilings.

The minimum installation temperature is 5°C.

The minimum radius for bending the heating element is 25mm.

The heating unit is not to be installed on irregular surfaces.

The heating units are to be supplied through a residual current device (RCD) having a rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA.

When the heating units have been positioned, they must be covered with an additional layer of material for mechanical protection.

Never power up the heating cable while it is coiled.

Never alter the heating cable in any way. If made shorter, it will overheat. Any attempt to physically alter the heating cable will void the warranty. Once cut, the heating cable cannot be repaired without consulting Thermogroup UK.

Never allow heating cable to touch, cross or overlap itself at any point. This will cause the heating cable to overheat and could result in fire or electrical shock.

Never install heating cable in walls or ceilings.

Combustible material must not be within 13mm of completed installation.

Caution: Do not use in areas subject to high mechanical loads or impact.

All electrical work must conform to current IEE wiring regulations and be checked or carried out by a qualified electrician. Electrical installation work in dwellings is subject to Part P of the building regulations.

All tile adhesives and grout must be suitable for use with underfloor heating. Single part, flexible tile adhesive is recommended - check with the adhesive manufacturer.

Multiple mats can be installed in one room & must be connected in parallel. Underfloor heating mats must never be joined in series.
