Beginning the first Sunday in Advent, we will pray the prayer to St. Michael after every Mass for the protection of Holy Mother Church. The prayer will be recited after the final blessing and dismissal, just before the recessional hymn.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

On this first Sunday of Advent, we begin our preparations for the celebration of the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas Day. We hear about the need to be prepared for Christ’s coming.

Christ’s mother, Mary, who was born without sin, loved and served God throughout her lifetime. She gave life to Jesus and then accompanied him on his journey. On this upcoming feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s immaculate conception, we hear how she had prepared to serve God. She was awake and ready. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8, is a holy day of obligation, with Mass at 9 AM at St. Cecilia and a vigil Mass at St. Anthony at Friday, Dec. 7.

Amen? Amen!

The First Sunday of Advent and the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

“ This important Marian feast occurs during Advent, a season of watchful and prayerful preparation for Christmas. She who knew better than anyone how to wait attentively for the Lord guides us and shows us how to make more vital and active our journey to the Holy Night of Bethlehem. With her, we spend these weeks in prayer and, guided by her bright star, hasten to make the spiritual journey that will lead us to celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation with greater intensity.” - Pope John Paul II

PA S T O R’ S R A M B L I N G S | 4TURKEY DINNER: We had a very successful turkey dinner this year at St. Margaret-St. John (photo 1). It was great to see so many people from the other parishes come and support the parish, and the meal was really delicious! 1 MASS ON VACA-TION: I had a week off and spent it with my good friends on a hunting trip. I was in Falmouth, Kentucky, about an hour from Cincinnati. One of my desires on the trip was to celebrate Mass for my friends at the local parish on Sunday. With the coopera-tion of the pastor, Fr. Mike, I was grateful to celebrate Mass for the Parish of St. Francis Xavier (photo 2). 1 ST. CECILIA FEAST RECEPTION: A big thank-you to our St. Cecilia Pastoral Council and very helpful parishioners who put together a beautiful reception for the feast day of St. Cecilia. We had a packed 10:00 Mass, and I’m glad people stayed and enjoyed the wonderful sandwiches and side dishes (photo 3). 1 GUEST SPEAKER: Malachi Lawrence spoke to a packed house at the 3rd Front Porch Chat at St. Anthony (photo 4, 5), as part of our celebration of Black Catholic Family/History Month. 1 GIVING TREE: Please visit the St. Cecilia giving tree by the Mary altar and take an ornament (photo 6). Each ornament has a gift idea for a child in need this Christmas. Thank you to the Donovan family for getting it ready each year. 1 CAREGIVERS: Congratulations to St. Anthony parishioners Vince and Lydia Wocher and Mary Kappesser (photo 7). They received Outstand-ing Caregiver Awards on Nov. 11 at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral.

The Patroness of MusicSt. Cecilia Parish — honoring the patroness of music — is fortunate to have so many talented and gifted ladies and men willing to share their individual talents. Together they comprise a dynamic music ministry that enhances our liturgies. The St. Cecilia Choir has recorded four CDs in the last seven years — The Darkest Hour (a meditation on the Passion of Christ), Christmas 2013, Ave Maria (hymns honoring our blessed Mother), and Christ the King (a collection of hymns praising God and the Eucharist). If you are new to the region or missed one of these releases, you can purchase any one or all of these recordings for $10 each. They make great birthday or Christmas gifts. See Director of Music Ministry Bob Kellison before or after any Mass to purchase any or all!

AVE MARIAHail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God,pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

MEMORARERemember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.Inspired with this confidence we fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful,O Mother of the Word Incarnate.Despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer them.

MAGNIFICATMy soul magnifies the Lordand my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;because He has regarded the lowliness of His handmaid;for behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed;because He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. His mercy is from generation to generationon those who fear Him.He has shown might with His arm.He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. He has given help to Israel, his servant, mindful of His mercy even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever.

Ave Maria is made possible by a gift in memory ofCarol Young, Matilda Kattus, and Bertha Farley.

National Night of Prayer for LifeThis year for the first time, our Eastside Region will join to-gether with parishes and nations around the world to celebrate the National Night of Prayer for Life. This very special night will take place from 9 PM on Dec. 8 until 1 AM on Dec. 9 at St. Cecilia Church.

Our Prayer for Life prayer service will consist of exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Rosary, the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel and silent prayer, music and hymns.

This wondrous night unites the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with the Feast of St. Juan Diego. It was on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1531 (at that time celebrated on Dec. 9), that Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and the Unborn, first appeared to St. Juan Diego. The Fatima message continues to be most relevant today. Churches and nations around the world are called this night to join together and to pray to our Blessed Mother for her protection of life and families and that she renews the Church and establishes peace.

Please join us for an hour or all of this important night.Email the hours that you will be able to be present between 9 PM and 1 AM to [email protected]. We look forward to cele-brating this blessed feast with you.

“And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” – Hebrews 9:27

RCIA this WeekPlease pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church! This week’s (December 5) RCIA lesson is THE LAST THINGS: What Happens After We Die? This session will cover:• The particular judgment of each soul at the moment of death• Hell: what it is, and why, if we fail to repent, we will be

separated from God forever• Heaven, the perfect communion of life and love with

the Trinity• Purgatory, the purification some need before entering into

full communion with God• Why Catholics pray for the dead

Questions for the week: What do you picture Heaven being like? Similarly, what do you picture Hell being like? What are some misconceptions about purgatory? What does the Catho-lic Church really teach about Purgatory? Why is it accurate to state, “God doesn’t send people to Hell”?

To study along with us, please log onto Formed.org (parish code YX2P22), program = Symbolon: Knowing the Faith ~ Session 10.

EASTSIDE REGION ADVENT MISSIONChrist Our God: Truth Incarnate

ST. CECILIA CHURCH 3105 MADISON RD. OAKLEY

— Our Advent Mission begins this Sunday night! —

Evening 1: Sunday, Dec. 2, at 7 PM with Fr. Tony Stephens, CPMEvening 2: Monday, Dec. 3, at 7 PM with Monsignor Frank Lane Confession will be available directly after the Monday evening talk.

Michelangelo’s Last JudgmentThe most famous depiction of The Last Judgment is Michel-angelo’s masterpiece on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. In it, the artist shows the Second Coming of Christ and the final judgment of all humanity. Many famous saints, such as Catherine of Alexandria, Peter, Lawrence, Bartholomew, Paul, Simon, Sebastian, and John the Baptist, are depicted as rising to Heaven. Along with the rest of the Chapel, the fresco was restored between 1980 and 1994, revealing many details that had been concealed by years of grime and smoke.
