Pastor: Rev. Randall L. Weinkauf Worship Services at 8:30AM & 11:00AM

Sunday School & Bible Classes (all ages) at 9:45AM

Our Mission: To share God’s love in Jesus Christ by word and deed.

We Warmly Welcome You to Our Worship Services: We welcome all visitors and pray that our worship will provide an opportunity for you to experi-ence God’s love. We invite you to return and share in our mission and ministry for our Savior.

Attendance Registration Books: Please fill out the attendance registration book found in the hymnal holders on the backs of the pews and chairs. Print neatly using complete name and address. Pass it down your row; after everyone has filled it out, return it to the center isle to be collected by the ushers.

Holy Communion: We proclaim that the body and blood of Christ are present with the bread and wine in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins and recommitment of our lives. Those able to exam-ine themselves, accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament are welcome to partake. Holy Communion is offered with both common and individual cups. If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher.

Nursery and Infant Care Rooms: Nursery care is available for children under four years of age from 8:15am – 12:15pm on first floor; take south elevator from narthex to first floor. The Infant Care Room with a changing table and rocker is located in Classroom 13 on the sanctuary level (second floor). Additional changing tables are available on the sanctuary level in the family and men’s restrooms, in the women’s restroom located across the hall from the Nursery in the lower level, and women’s restroom on the same floor as the Activity Center.

Sunday School: Visitors: If you are visiting today and your child would like to attend Sunday school, please bring the child to Rooms 14 and 15, east of the sanctuary where they will be directed to the appropriate classroom.

Fellowship Between Services: Please join us for refreshments and socializing in the Activity Center. Thank you!

Special Needs: Visual: Large print service folders services are available.

Worship service folders are available in Braille upon request. Hearing: Hand held amplification receivers with ear pieces are available at the usher's table. Deaf and Hard of Hearing attendees of the early service are encouraged to follow the American Sign Language (ASL) translation of the liturgy as provided by volunteers of the parish's Deaf Min-istry. Mobility: Spaces in the center aisle next to the short pews in the sanctuary are reserved for wheelchairs, scooters and seated walkers. In addition, two wheelchairs are available for use in the building. One is located on first floor of the west accessible entrance near the elevator; the second is located in the coat rack of the narthex near the sanctuary.

INTRODUCTION Moses tells the Israelites that they are called to be a priestly kingdom and a holy people. Jesus sends out the disciples as laborers into the harvest. In baptism we too are anointed for ministry, sharing God’s compassion with our needy world. From the Lord’s table, we go forth to proclaim the good news, to heal the sick, and to share our bread with the hungry. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC CHILDREN’S MESSAGE GATHERING HYMN “Rise Up, O Saints of God!”

GATHERING Stand, as you are able. INVOCATION P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one ☩God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. C: Amen.

CONFESSION P: Trusting God’s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P: Eternal God our creator, C: in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. P: Since we are justified by faith,

we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God ☩forgives you all your sins.

C: Amen. GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE Hymn 791 “All People That on Earth Do Dwell,” stanza 5 PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. God of compassion, you have opened the way for us and brought us to yourself. Pour your love into our hearts, that, overflowing with joy, we may freely share the

blessings of your realm and faithfully proclaim the good news of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. Sit

WORD FIRST READING—Exodus 19:2-8a (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) At Sinai God assured Israel, “You shall be my treasured possession,” and commissioned them to serve as mediating priests for the nations. The people commit themselves completely to God’s will.

After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. PSALMODY Hymn 791 “All People That on Earth Do Dwell,” stanzas 1-4

This hymn by William Kethe is a metrical paraphrase of today’s psalmody, Psalm 100.

SECOND READING—Romans 5:1-8 We are no longer God’s enemies but have peace with God, because we were brought into a right relationship with God through Christ’s death. A tested character has been forged for us which empowers endurance in the midst of suffering and hope for final salvation.

Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand, as you are able. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: Alleluia. The kingdom of God has come near; C: repent, and believe in the good news. Alleluia. (Mark 1:15)

Page 6: unday t 17

6

GOSPEL—Matthew 9:35-10:8 [9-23] (Please see the final page of this worship folder.) The mission of Jesus’ followers is to continue the mission of Jesus himself. Here, he instructs his first disciples how they might proclaim the gospel through their words and deeds.

Before the reading: P: The gospel according to Matthew. C: Glory to you, O Lord.

After the reading: P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

Hartig, elodien zum Muinzer Gesangbuche, 1833. Public domain. Stand, as you are able. APOSTLES’ CREED P: God has made us God’s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith.

C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life ☩ everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P: Called together in the Spirit’s embrace, let us pray for the mending of God’s world.

After each petition:

P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude:

P: All these things, and whatever else you see that we need, we entrust to your care through Christ our Lord. C: Amen. Sit GATHERING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY RECEIVING OF OFFERINGS GATHERING OF ATTENDANCE SHEETS

(All members, visitors, and guests are asked to sign the red Record of Fellowship and return it to the end of the row.)

Stand, as you are able. OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Let us pray. Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. C: Amen.

Page 9: unday t 17

MEAL PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Page 10: unday t 17

10

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION P: Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread. Our Lord’s body let us take together. LAMB OF GOD

DISTRIBUTION HYMNS Hymn 626 “Come, Let Us Eat” Hymn 571 “God Loved the World So That He Gave” Hymn 790 “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” Stand, as you are able. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER P: Let us pray. Jesus Christ, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. C: Amen.

SENDING BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and ☩ give you peace. C: Amen. SENDING HYMN “I Love to Tell the Story” [Tune: Hankey, LBW 390]

I love to tell the story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story, because I know it’s true; it satisfies my longings as nothing else can do. Refrain I love to tell the story, I’ll sing this theme in glory, and tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story; how pleasant to repeat what seems each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet! I love to tell the story, for some have never heard the message of salvation from God’s own holy Word. Refrain

Page 12: unday t 17

12

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest. And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song, I’ll sing the old, old story that I have loved so long. Refrain

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

June 21—Onesimos Nesib, translator, evangelist, died 1931 Onesimos (oh-NESS-ee-mus neh-SEEB) was born into the Oromo people of Ethiopia. He was captured by slave traders and taken from his homeland to Eritrea, where he was bought, freed, and educated by Swedish missionaries. He translated the Bible into Oromo and returned to his homeland to preach the Gospel. His tombstone includes a verse from Jeremiah 22:29, “O land, land, land, hear the word of the Lord!”

June 24—John the Baptist The birth and life of John the Baptist is celebrated exactly six months be-fore Christmas Eve. For Christians in the Northern Hemisphere, these two dates are deeply symbolic. John said that he must decrease as Je-sus increased. According to tradition, John was born as the days are longest and then steadily decrease, while Jesus was born as the days are shortest and then steadily increase. In many countries this day is cel-ebrated with customs associated with the summer solstice.

PARISH NOTES AND NEWS WE WELCOME TO IMMANUEL REVEREND LOVICK. THE FLOWERS TODAY are given by the Landgrebe family in honor of Father’s Day; and by Gary and Elois Allan to celebrate Mark and Sheri Crabtree’s 25 th wedding anniversary on June 13.

PRINTED COPIES of Pastor Randy’s sermons for the past month are available for your taking. They are located in the plastic rack on the front corner of the table in the church entryway.

CELEBRATE 12th ANNIVERSARY of Immanuel Lutheran’s Outreach to the Blind Ministry. Give thanks for 12 years of mission work on Sat., July 8, 5-8 PM at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 n. 2nd, in the Community Room. The guest speaker will be th Rev. Dave Andrus from St. Louis. More details to follow.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL NEEDS YOU! On July 10-13, Immanuel will open its doors to share God's Word with children of the church and community. Our goal is to reach 70 children in attendance. We can't do this without you. Please consider being a part of this exciting week by donating time, supplies or money. Here's where you can help: Crew leaders are needed to shepherd groups of up to 5 kids through all the VBS learning stations. Assistants/Co-Leaders are needed in crafts and games. We still need a leader for the games station. This is an easy, fun station and everything is provided. Supply lists will are available on the information table by next week. Please pick one up and see if there is anything you can donate to help with the stations. If you prefer, monetary donations can be made by using the envelopes in the pews marked "Designated Gifts". Please indicate "Vacation Bible School" as the recipient. We are excited to share this with you and are very grateful for your support. To sign up for any recruitment positions, please contact Pam Becker at [email protected]. In the meantime, we ask for your prayers that God will send those little ones to hear His Word and the workers to complete the ministry. You can sign up your little ones at vbspro.events/p/d59d0a.

MAGNETS FOR CONFIRMANDS: On May 21, many of you joined us in celebrating our new confirmation students: Olivia Ferguson, Renna Folsom, and Aris Grady. But as we mentioned during the reception, confirmation is not an ending, but a beginning. According to the LCMS Frequently Asked Questions webpage:

"Confirmation is a time-honored church tradition (not required by God's Word, but we believe useful nonetheless) in which the child baptized as an infant is given the opportunity to confess for himself or herself the faith that he or she was unable to confess as an infant.

Faith is not “created” at confirmation, but it is rather confessed for all to hear so that the church can join and rejoice in this public confession, which has its roots in the faith which God Himself created in Baptism."

Even though these students were baptized as youth, they have now completed formal instruction, and publicly professed their faith. As with any person of faith, these students need a faith-based support system behind them. So, the iROCC youth group purchased magnets with the confirmation students' names, photos, and confirmation verses, and we are making them available to the congregation. Use these magnets as a reminder to pray regularly for our confirmands, by using their confirmation verses as a inspiration, or coming up with prayers of your own. We added the magnets to the refrigerators in the kitchen, the whiteboard in room 205, and left the remainders on the information table in the narthex. If you have any questions, or did not find any magnets available, please contact Mandy Sponholtz at [email protected].

THE THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY GROUP will be starting a new 6 week study “The Broken Way” by Ann Voskamp on June 15. It features a DVD and discussion led by a variety of class members. We meet at 9:30 a.m. and all are welcome.

PROPERTY AND GROUNDS will be hosting an ALICE Active shooter 2 day instructor certification class Nov. 1-2, 2017, a non-weapon training event. The purpose of advanced ALICE training is to educate local and school-based law enforcement, as well as church, hospital, and workplace administrators and safety professionals about our researched-based, proactive response approach to Violent Intruder events. The ALICE training program is designed to supplement current “Lock -down”

Page 17: unday t 17

17

or “Secure-in-Place” procedures used frequently in our public schools and institutions. Tragic historic events have dictated the need of enhanced response options to increase chances of surviving a horrific event. If you have any interest in becoming an instructor of ALICE for our church, please contact Nancy Weinkauf. [email protected] or 393-6746.

NEW TREES – Special thanks for those who donated funds to remove some diseased trees, and to purchase, plant, and maintain new trees. We have purchased three trees so far: a Small Leaf Linden south of the exterior steps around the N elevator, an Eastern Redbud near the mailbox and a River Birch clump near the SW corner of the church building. Thanks to a specific memorial fund donation, the Linden tree is in honor of John Bond, Jane Hoyt’s father.

LANDSCAPE HELP - Special thanks for landscape labor and leadership, tree and flower planting, tree removal, pruning, and general exterior maintenance to: Gary Allan, Marvin & Karyn Bredehoft, Al Kuhlman, David Lahm, Jack Landgrebe, and Jim Sylwester.

We will need volunteers during the summer for special watering needs. Contact Jack before July 2.

THE SOCIAL MINISTRIES COMMITTEE thanks everyone who donated school supplies. These will be given to students in Lawrence public schools. We will collect more school supplies in late July and early August. Thanks again!!!

GENEROUS OFFERING: Approximately $1,325 has been given for “Bible Sticks,” which contains the New Testament and selected psalms. These are given to service people so that they may have God’s word with them. MORE BLESSINGS! Of the total, $635 was sent to “Faith Comes by Hearing” in May and thus was doubled by a gift from another source. Praise the Lord!

RED CROSS SAYS “THANK YOU”: Jane Blocher, the executive director for the Kansas/Nebraska Region, wrote “We are blessed to have such a strong cadre of volunteers who support blood collections in Lawrence every eight weeks. Immanuel Lutheran has been a real blessing to our organization and we are so appreciative of all your efforts!” The blood drive is in our Activity Center. Jack Landgrebe leads the effort to set up and take down cots, members provide snacks, and escort those who have given blood from a cot to the “Snack Table.” See Jack Landgrebe to volunteer. The next blood drive will be July 27. Thank you.

SIGN LANGUAGE MINI-LESSONS, lasting only 10 minutes each Sunday, will be held in the Library (room along the west wall of the Sanctuary) from 9:35-9:45 AM, so as not to interfere with Adult Bible Study or iROCC. Those who would like to understand better what is being signed at the 8:30 service, from junior-high age through adult, are welcome and encouraged to attend as they are able .

DEAF MINISTRY: The first two rows of movable chairs on the left side of the Sanctuary are reserved at the first service each Sunday for Deaf Ministry committee members and all who wish to follow the liturgy in American Sign Language. If you have any questions about Deaf Ministry at Immanuel, contact Ralph Planthold at 813-244-9733 or [email protected].

NEED A MEMBER’S ADDRESS OR EMAIL? You can view the most updated version of Immanuel’s Directory of Members on our website: immanuellawrence.org. After logging in, go to Members Only (bar at top of page). Go to the Resources pull-down tab and select Documents. You will see a link there to Immanuel Lutheran Church Directory of Members. Call the church office if you have any questions. Also, please notify the church office when you have changes to your contact information. Thank you.

COLLECTING Hy-Vee and Checkers Receipts at ILC will be suspended until school starts in the fall.

CONTRIBUTIONS FOR NEW STAFF POSITION As you know, Immanuel has added a staff position to the budget to assist with the education ministry, college ministry and the music ministry. Please consider regular giving to fund that position. Donations can be made using the designated gift envelopes or they may be included in your regular giving envelope. Please put “new staff position” on the memo line on your check. Immanuel will need to have at least one year of salary in the account before advertising for the position.

GENEROSITY THOUGHT—Romans 5:8 “But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.” God did not wait for humankind to make the first move. God did not wait for Adam and Even to come looking, rather God went and found them. And while we were still sinners, still enemies of God, still set against God, God sent the Son Jesus to suffer, die, and rise for us. God was moved by God’s own love and generosity and kindness. We now seek to grow up into God’s image as loving, generous, and kind sons and daughters of the heavenly Father.

SUMMERTIME STRESS SLOWING YOU DOWN?

We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time. But hurts, struggles, crises, and problems don't take a vacation. Many times our difficulties seem even worse during the summer because everyone else seems to be enjoying life while you are feeling down. If you are experiencing a difficult time—emotionally, spiritually, or relationally—you don’t have to suffer alone. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers, ready to listen, care for and encourage you, pray with and for you, and provide one-to-one Christian care to help you through whatever it is that you are facing. Men are matched with male Stephen Ministers and women are matched with female Stephen Ministers. It’s free. It’s confidential. And it will make a difference in your life!

To find out more about Stephen Ministry for you or someone you know, talk with Pastor Randy, Immanuel-University’s Stephen Ministry Leaders.

THE LUTHERAN HOUR Are you listening to what “they” say—or to what God says? Listen to “The Lutheran Hour” next Sunday at 7:30 a.m. on radio station WIBW 580 AM (Topeka), at 8:00 a.m. on KCMO 710 AM (Mission), or at 8:30 a.m. on KLWN

1320 AM (Lawrence), as Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour Rev. Ken Klaus preaches on the theme, “What God Says,” based on Isaiah 43:1-3. Or you can listen to “The Lutheran Hour” on streaming MP3 at http://www.lutheranhour.org/default.asp.

SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST - Matt. 9:35–10:8 (9–20) (June 18)

“‘If you refuse to have the right kind of preachers, then you shall have the devil and his preachers, who preach lies to you. These you will have to accept, and you will have to let them govern you and torment you.’ Because the Gospel has been refused and even persecuted in our Germany, the corners are full of sectarians, fanatics, and Anabaptists; and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent it. The right preventive measure here would be to take the Gospel seriously and to pray God faithfully that He may send true and faithful laborers into His harvest (Matt. 9:38).” LW 21:227

Quotation from Luther’s Works, American Edition (56 vols.; St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House and Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1955–1986).
