Understand the global context Global priorities are related to the following trends: Populations are growing, increasing the stress on water and food supplies. Future supply of some critical materials is uncertain. People are beginning to realise that we have been treating the world like a giant toilet, but it doesn't flush! (Source: McDonough). Future growth of developed economies is uncertain. ICT technologies are enabling new social 'crowd' platforms to perform typical industry functions. Examples include making, programming, fixing, fundraising, innovating, retail, knowledge sharing and learning. Understand the country context For example, the graph below shows from the Department of Energy and Climate Change's Energy Consumption in the UK data tables. This publicly available data shows the breakdown of energy use by domestic, manufacturing and service sectors, for applications such as heating, lighting and transport. This graph can help us identify “energy hotspots” and think about how products could provide benefits that may address these hotspots.
