rom the first $30,000 of private money raised in 1895 to keep the University of North Dakota from closing its doors, the spirit of philanthropy has been an integral part of the University’s evolution.

Charitable foundations like the University of North Dakota Foundation play an important role in supporting higher education, providing an efficient structure for mutually beneficial partnerships between the public university and private constituencies.

Private gifts to the University through the UND Foundation are increasingly important to ensuring the entrepreneurial spirit of innovation, creativity, and leadership thrive in the educational environment created here.

Your partnership with the UND Foundation to fund priorities in four key areas will build a bigger and better university.•Passionate Students are the heart of our rich academic environment. With

abundant scholarships, UND becomes more accessible and attractive to ambitious students who may otherwise go elsewhere, or worse yet, not be able

to afford a UND education at all.•Inspirational Educators provide an environment for innovative research and

allow students to work with prominent scholars and experts in their fields of study. They are essential to the University and enable it to prosper in the intensely competitive higher education environment.

•Innovative Programs capture the spirit of North Dakota’s work-ethic, educating and preparing future leaders to meet global needs. Academic programs must constantly be developed, evaluated and renewed to respond to an ever-changing world.

•Extraordinary Places support this thriving education community. It’s not just about constructing buildings. We must continue to expand the foundation laid in 1883 to create a stimulating learning, teaching and research environment that encourages interdisciplinary scholarship and focuses on physical and technological resources for maximum benefit.

Your commitment not only reflects your own passion, vision and values, it becomes an investment with priceless return to others.

The UND Foundation has a rich history dating back to a commitment by the University’s first eight graduates in 1889 who recognized the value of organizing to remain connected to their alma mater, dubbing themselves the Alumni Association of the University of North Dakota.

A development fund within the UND Alumni Association was soon-after established and served as the receiving agent for private gifts to benefit the University until 1978, when the UND Foundation was formally incorporated as a separate 501(c)(3).

With assets of less than $1 million in 1978, today the UND Foundation has more than $205 million in assets and continues to increase the number of alumni and friends who provide private support to UND. An independent board of directors, comprised of UND alumni, oversees activities and provides fund management direction.

In the spirit of fiscal responsibility, the University of North Dakota Foundation shares many resources with its sister organization, the UND Alumni Association, creating combined efficiencies and accountability. Together, the two organizations support all aspects of alumni activity.

Named endowmentsCreating a named endowed fund ensures educational or institutional longevity. The spirit of entrepreneurship shines when you establish an endowment and take a chance on human spirit.

Your gift is permanently invested to produce annual allocations for projects you designate. All endowments are professionally managed for both income and growth. The UND Foundation manages an endowment portfolio valued at more than $151 million.

An endowment may be established with a gift of at least $25,000. Gifts can be made over five years until the minimum is reached. You may also fund an endowment at the maturity of a planned gift arrangement.

You may designate your endowment in your name, to honor a relative or friend, or even a favorite professor or coach.

Student ScholarshipsThe need for student scholarships grows increasingly important as high education costs overwhelm students who leave college with insurmountable debt. For many, student scholarships not only make college a reality, they offer the hope of success.

An endowment of at least $25,000 can establish a scholarship that begins giving back up to $1,000 per year.

Professorial chairs, facultyAn endowed chair is one of the premier forms of recognition a university can bestow. endowed chair and faculty positions attract eminent national and international scholars who, in turn, attract the brightest students.

As UND aspires to be among the top public research universities in the country, the need for endowed faculty has never been greater. The research and scholarship of individuals who hold these positions will help UND build on its achievements.

An endowment of at least $2 million will establish a chair within a specific department. Your named gift enhances UND’s ability to competitively recruit the highest caliber faculty to key positions which will further the University’s prominence. endowed professorships are established with a minimum of $500,000.

Program SupportInvestments in academic programs unleash innovative ideas and expand UND’s reach beyond our North Dakota borders into the greater global community. endowment funds earmarked for campus programs provide critical operating support and opportunities for faculty to expand experiences for their students beyond the classroom to include: •experientiallearningopportunities•fundingforvisitingscholars•internshipexperiences

Page 11: UND Foundation Brochure

9

The UND Foundation also supports fund raising efforts for extended University programs including UND Athletics, the Chester Fritz Library, Conflict resolution Center, Native American Center, and many other invaluable campus assets.

A minimum of $1 million will establish a program support endowment.

Annual giftsAs critical as endowments are to funding a solid future, annual gifts are equally important to meeting the immediate, and sometimes unforeseen, yearly needs of the University. Annual unrestricted gifts of any size play an important role in helping fund UND’s future.

Using e-mail, direct mail and student callers, the UND Foundation approaches alumni and friends to inform them of campus-wide University needs and request annual funding commitments to support them.

The University of North Dakota Foundation will work directly with you, your family, and financial and legal advisors to ensure your gifts to benefit the University meet your wishes. There are many different options available as you consider investing in UND’s future.

University of North Dakota Foundation development officers will help you explore ways your gifts can be mutually beneficial.

Outright Gifts

CashThe simplest way to give to UND through the UND Foundation is by personal check, payable to the UND Foundation. Cash gifts can be used to fully or partially fund a new or existing endowment or provide annual support.

Gifts of StockMaking a gift of appreciated stock is among the most tax-wise giving methods available. To transfer stock to the UND Foundation simply contact us for transfer instructions or visit our Web site, www.undfoundation.org.

Personal PropertyYou may have a rare collection, valuable books or artwork, or other property of value you would like to use to support UND. Doing so may offer important tax and estate planning advantages.

Real Estatereal estate may be an ideal asset to gift for the benefit of UND. Potential capital gain tax avoidance and a charitable deduction make real estate gifts particularly attractive.

Planned GiftsPlanned gifts provide opportunities for you to support the University by making all arrangements today, even though your gift is deferred to some time in the future. Some forms of planned gifts provide income to you and potential tax advantages to your estate while ultimately fulfilling your desire to give to the University of North Dakota.

Gift Annuity*A charitable gift annuity is an easy way to make a gift to benefit UND while providing yourself an income for life. You make a gift of cash or acceptable property and the UND Foundation agrees to make fixed payments to you (and up to one other person) for life.

A gift annuity arrangement provides a fixed, lifetime payment without speculative or risky investments. With an investment of at least $10,000, funded from real estate, cash, stocks, or other acceptable property, you will receive a substantial charitable tax deduction and potentially reduce capital gains taxes. Payment rates will vary depending on your age and number of income beneficiaries.

Deferred Gift Annuity*By establishing a gift annuity before you retire and holding payments for at least one year, you can substantially enhance your retirement income and receive a larger charitable deduction.

Charitable Remainder TrustIf you have appreciated property producing little or no income, you can turn it into a productive asset with tax benefits too. Transfer cash or appreciated property to a charitable remainder trust with the UND Foundation. Trust assets may be sold tax-free and you or a designated beneficiary can receive income for life or for a specific term.

An annuity trust will produce a fixed payment each year, while a unitrust provides a variable payout that may offer inflation protection.

Charitable Lead TrustWhen you fund a charitable lead trust, income is distributed to the UND Foundation for a specified length of time and at the trust’s conclusion the trust assets revert to you or are transferred to family.

A charitable lead trust can be a tax-efficient method to leverage larger than normal gift transfers to family, and support programs of your choice at UND.

Life Estateretain lifetime use of your house or farm through a life estate arrangement with the UND Foundation, but receive a charitable deduction today.

BequestA bequest, made through a designation in a last will and testament, is the simplest type of planned gift and the easiest to implement. By including language in your will, you can leave cash, property or other assets to the UND Foundation and designate how you would like the gift to be used.

An example of language for you to consider when including the University of North Dakota Foundation in your will or living trust:

“I give, devise and bequeath to the University of North Dakota Foundation, 3100 University Avenue Stop 8157, Grand Forks North Dakota 58202-8157, a nonprofit charitable corporation under the laws of the State of North Dakota, (tax ID #45-0348296), INSERT: a SpEcIfIc dollaR amouNT, pERcENTagE of ESTaTE, SpEcIfIc aSSET(S) oR RESIduE of ESTaTE, to be used for INSERT gIfT dESIgNaTIoN.”

Qualified Plan BeneficiarySimilar to making provisions in a will, this form of testamentary gift provides opportunity for you to list the University of North Dakota Foundation as a beneficiary of a qualified investment plan, which may include a life insurance policy, 401(k) investment plan, Individual retirement Account (IrA), or employee Stock option Plan (eSoP).

The UND Foundation has additional planned giving information available on its Web site, www.undfoundation.org, or by calling 1-800-543-8764. Ask a development officer for a personalized gift illustration outlining income and tax advantages of a charitable arrangement.

*This is not legal advice. Any prospective donor should seek the advice of a qualified estate and/or tax professional to determine the consequences of his/her gift. A copy of state registrations and financial information may be obtained by calling 1-800-543-8764. A charitable gift annuity is not a state regulated or guaranteed product. We do not provide gift annuities in states of Washington, Wisconsin or New York.
