Moved by the needs of people suffering from poverty, hunger and lack of shelter, Sisters of Mercy Foundress Catherine McAuley devoted her life to serving others and connecting people with resources to those in need. Mercy Foundation takes inspiration from Catherine’s rich legacy, believing in the inherent dignity and value of all people, and in the generosity of the human spirit.

A Legacy of Caringt h e s I s t e r s o f m e r c y

Devoted to serving others throughout her life, Catherine McAuley used an unexpected inheritance to build a house of mercy for women and children in Dublin, Ireland. She founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831, and inspired many to join her ministry to help the sick, the poor and the uneducated. Today, the Sisters of Mercy continue Catherine’s legacy around the world, focusing on health care, education, housing, and care for the poor and elderly.

A 501(c)3 organization, Mercy Foundation is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas West Midwest Community.

Our Spirit is Compassion”o u r n a m e I s m e r c y

For Mercy Foundation, philanthropy is one of the most powerful expressions of compassion. Just as many people in the community need a hand, countless others are reaching out to them with comfort and hope. By Catherine’s example, Mercy Foundation forges enduring connections between them, empowering the community to make a difference by giving.

Mercy Foundation donors profoundly transform lives by:

• Feeding the hungry• Sheltering the homeless• Educating the underserved• Providing safe living environments for low-income seniors• Funding health-care innovations at Mercy hospitals• Healing the poor at MercyClinics… and much more.

Whatever your philanthropic interest—and whatever or however your capacity to give—Mercy Foundation is the link to creating positive changes and inspiring hope.

Mercy Foundation raises funds for a variety of ministries within the Sacramento region, with one mission: To enhance the lives of people in the community. Whether your interest is in health care, housing, care for the poor, children or the elderly, Mercy Foundation can help you achieve your philanthropic goals.

health carePhilanthropy helps Mercy stay on the cutting edge of health care by funding state-of-the-art equipment, capital needs, patient-care programs and services, and education and training to keep physicians, nurses and other caregivers at the forefront of medical knowledge. Charitable gifts also fund vital health services for people who cannot afford traditional primary or specialty care.

The Sacramento region’s not-for-profit Mercy Hospitals reflect the Sisters of Mercy heritage of caring, offering a wide range of health, social and support services with special advocacy for the poor and underserved. Renowned programs in such areas as cardiovascular, cancer, orthopedics and neuroscience provide high-quality, compassionate specialty care to the greater Sacramento community.

MercyClinics, located throughout the region, offer free or low-cost health care to countless under- and uninsured patients each year. These clinics play an important role as part of the region’s health-care safety net, and are operated by Mercy hospitals in areas where disparities create significant barriers to care. Services range from routine vaccinations and prenatal care to breast cancer screenings.

For patients with a terminal illness, Mercy Hospice provides physical, emotional and spiritual comfort and care in the supportive surroundings of their home, residential care facility or skilled nursing facility.

affordable housingMercy Foundation donors fund critical housing programs through a partnership with Mercy Housing California. Since 1987, Mercy Housing has developed nearly 10,000 affordable homes across the state, improving the lives of thousands. The organization offers affordable low-income housing programs at more than 100 multi-family, senior and special-needs properties, more than three dozen of which are in the greater Sacramento area.

Resident services include life-skills and vocational training, mental health and health care and substance abuse recovery services. Programs for seniors at Mercy properties place a special emphasis on health and wellness, such as cholesterol and blood-pressure screenings. Mercy Housing California partners with myriad county and nonprofit health and human services programs to enhance its scope of support.

educationCharitable support funds education programs and services that empower children and adults to reach their full potential.

Known as “the school that works,” Cristo Rey High School Sacramento offers students with limited economic resources a rigorous college-preparatory education that includes a work-study program to give them real-world experience with partner employers throughout the region. All students work one day per week to help offset tuition costs, and attend school for longer hours to make up for time spent in the office. The experience builds their confidence and skills.

Mercy Education Resource Center creates healthy communities by providing affordable educational support, counseling and other services to children and adults. The center is dedicated to furthering the growth and well-being of those who are emotionally distressed and educationally disadvantaged from learning disabilities, familial or societal circumstances, or other factors that place them at risk in learning environments. Services are offered on a sliding fee scale, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity or religion.

care for the poor and elderlyMercy Foundation donors fund critical programs and services that otherwise would not be available to those who need housing, meals and other support to survive.

At Sacramento Loaves & Fishes, 600 to 1,000 homeless guests are fed healthy, hot meals each day, and can safely shower and rest at the facility’s Friendship Park. Other programs on the Loaves & Fishes campus include Mustard Seed School, which offers homeless children a safe, nurturing learning environment, and Maryhouse, a daytime shelter for homeless women and children that provides short-term guidance to help them take the next step toward independence and self-sufficiency.

Regional volunteers from Mercy Volunteer Corps staff crucial roles at Mercy ministries, such as Maryhouse and the Clean & Sober program at Loaves & Fishes. Funded by Mercy Foundation donors, volunteers provide a tangible service to the community that keeps these programs running efficiently.

Bruceville Terrace a skilled-nursing facility, and Mercy McMahon Terrace, a licensed residential-care facility, offer a modern approach to meeting the housing, social, and day-to-day needs of senior citizens in a comfortable environment.

Mercy Beyond Borders links women and children in Sudan and other countries with U.S. resources to promote health, provide education and alleviate poverty. The ministry uses methods proven effective in reducing extreme poverty, including educating women and girls and funding small entrepreneurial projects designed and implemented by the displaced women themselves.

mercy center auburn: serving our community’s spiritual needs

Sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Center Auburn, located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, offers individuals and nonprofits a retreat and conference space for contemplative dialogue and learning. Garden paths and meditation groves offer a tranquil place for meaningful reflection and spiritual renewal. Support from Mercy Foundation donors enables the Sisters of Mercy to offer use of the center on a sliding payment scale for low-budget community groups.
