APIs for SOA

• Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural methodology built upon the concept that capabilities should be implemented as services. The ‘Client’ can utilize any software component following the usage specification, irrespective of the technologies upon which the service was developed or upon which the 'calling client' was developed.

• Application Programming Interface (API) is a source code-based specification to be used as an interface by software components (services) to communicate with each other. Independent SOA services communicate using a common API.

• APIs can be created in any chosen syntax (Web Services) based on standardized syntax-neutral data exchange structures (Master data exchange structure)

• API is a layer for providing data access. API's should be architected with SOA support in mind (e.g., JSON, REST, SOAP).

Increasing interest in API Standardization

• ISCO. A new UN/CEFACT group developing API standards.

• Openshipping.org aims to define APIs. In particular, a specific API covering the Container Status Moves for shipping lines and BCO usage only

• Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA): A new association to encourage collaboration on digitalisation, standardisation and interoperability in the container shipping industry.

• INTTRA, a US-based software firm spearheading a non-commercial initiative CONNECT to develop standards and data sharing protocols to help improve the free flow of information between carriers, ports, freight forwarders and BCOs.

Global Trade – Semantic Anchors

A Global Standard must be based on a common repository of terms. The UN/CEFACT Core Component Library is this repository. (see examples below)

• Shipment (Trade Delivery)

• A shipment is an identifiable collection of one or more Trade Items (available to be) transported together from the Seller (Original Consignor/Shipper) to the Buyer (Final/Ultimate Consignee):

A Shipment can only be destined for one Buyer

A Shipment can be made up of some or all Trade Items from one or more Sales Orders

A Shipment can have only one Customs UCR

A shipment may form part or all of a Consignment or may be transported in different Consignments.

• Consignment

• A consignment is a separately identifiable collection of Consignment Items (available to be) transported from one Consignor to one Consignee via one or more modes of transport as specified in one single transport service contractual document:

A Consignment can only have one Transport Service Buyer

A Consignment can only have one Transport Service Provider

A Consignment can only have one Consignor

A Consignment can only have one Consignee

The Transport Service Buyer can be either the Consignor or the Consignee

A Consignment is made up of one or more Consignment Items

A Consignment can be made up of some or all Trade Items (aggregated into Consignment Items) from one or more Shipments
