1. Plan early
Start planning your schedule early!
Understand your away elective options Usually 2nd or 3rd year for categorical/primary care Usually 3rd or 4th year for med/peds
Communicate with the chiefs regarding scheduling. Many have been able to coordinate schedules with co-residents.
Make sure your passport will not expire soon.

You’ve selected a site? Great! Now…1. Complete the site’s application materials (if
required).2. Once you’re formally accepted, let Kelly Lear know.
She will need the name and contact info of the supervising physician.
3. Kelly Lear will help you complete the following required GME paperwork:
a) Letter of agreement - between UNC/Health Care System GME Office & the receiving program/institution. Includes info on the plans for physician supervision at the host institution in compliance with GME policy
b) Special projects liability coverage formc) Release and Hold Harmless Agreement

*Residents continue to receive hospital salary during approved electives
*Consider applying for these scholarships:
1. UNC Resident Physician Scholarshiphttp://www.med.unc.edu/oia/unc-residents/going-abroad Must have completed intern year to apply Up to $2000 Applications due spring (February 15th with decision by March 15th ) or fall (September 15th with decision by October 15th )
2. Dr. Charles A Sanders/Project HOPE International Residency Scholarship Program:

6. Get immunized and get your travel meds
Options:UNC Travel Health Clinic- Pay a flat fee, then
an additional amount depending on the consultation time (pricey).
Look at CDC.gov, then contact your PCP/ occupational health/ health department for the vaccines you need (requires a bit more work but cheaper)
Other private travel clinics are usually fee for service (find them with google)

6. Get immunized and get your travel meds
Things to consider for your health: Antimalarials Sunscreen Insect repellant (DEET spray, clothing repellant, etc) Bed nets Water purification Traveler’s diarrhea prophylaxis Chronic meds that you take First aid: Antibacterial ointment, bandaids, tape OTC meds pain/fever control, cough/cold/ allergy Vitamins

7. Get a visa and/or medical license if needed

8. Buy required travel insurance from UNC OIA
This is the process:
1. Fill out this form: http://www.med.unc.edu/oia/unc-residents/travel-health-insurance-form-for-unc-residents2. Watch your inbox for an email with instructions on how to purchase the travel insurance (buy online or write a check)3. Print out a copy of the insurance policy to take with you & leave another copy with an emergency contact in the States (with your travel itinerary)
*Note: When you purchase insurance, you must know your travel dates. *Tip: It’s a good idea to buy travel insurance that extends a few days after your anticipated departure date in case you have to stay there longer (i.e. due to unforeseen travel delays).

9. Complete the UNC travel modules
After you fill out the travel insurance form (see #8), you will get an email with info on how to access the required UNC travel modules.
Complete at least the 2 required modules and quizzes before you go. Takes 1-2 hours.
